Looking at Animals, Tim Flach Photographs- Washington Post

Photographer Tim Flach’s latest work aims to offer a guide to the animal kingdom

 September 4

When Tim Flach had a camera and his first roll of film placed in his palm at art school and was nudged toward the zoo, he couldn’t have imagined he would still be photographing animals over 30 years later. Having produced beautifully lit treatises on dogs and horses, his most recent work, “More Than Human,” covers every corner of the animal kingdom.
Many of the animals are pulled out of their natural environment and set against a plain background. Without the visual distraction of the environment, the animals’ slightest mannerisms — a look, a touch, a stray tuft of hair — are magnified.
But Flach says his series is about more than just beauty or capturing the surprising quirks of animals. The images are also a vehicle for commentary on our unusual relationships with animals.
