3 FFs INJURED AT LONG ISLAND FIRE 

Sunday, December 28, 2014   At least three firefighters suffered minor injuries while responding to a house fire on Spruce Street in West Hempstead on Friday.
The fire started in the two-story home's unfinished basement and quickly spread to the rest of the home.
Fire officials say the homeowners were inside and saw smoke. They ran out of the house and called for help.The people living at the home were not hurt in the fire.
It took dozens of firefighters from nine departments to get the fire under control.
The residents of the home are now displaced.
There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.
     

 

COMPTON FIRE SENDS 5 FIREFIGHTERS TO HOSPITAL 

Sunday, December 28, 2014    Five firefighters were sent to the hospital after a roof of a converted garage collapsed during a fire in Compton.

Fire crews were called to the structure in the 800 block of East Laurel Street at around 11:20 p.m. Saturday.

Two firefighters were on top of the roof when it collapsed. Two others were inside when it fell through.

KY FF INJURED IN WALL COLLAPSE 

Sunday, December 28, 2014   A three-alarm fire early Saturday morning destroyed a 46-unit storage facility at 505 Birkhead Avenue off East Fourth Street, according to the Daviess County Fire Department.

A wall collapsed about 30 minutes after the first firefighters arrived, injuring one firefighter, who was treated at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital for a lower extremity injury and released, Asst. Chief Shaun Blandford said.

The name of the injured firefighter was not available.

Blandford said heavy fire and smoke were present when the first firefighters arrived. "The entire structure was a total loss, and there was about 80 percent loss of contents," he said. "The cause is under investigation by the Daviess County Sheriff's Department."

The fire that began in a middle unit of the rental facility was reported at 5:14 a.m.

FIREFIGHTER DIES FOLLOWING SHIFT 

Sunday, December 28, 2014    We regret to pass on to you that Jersey City Firefighter James Woods died suddenly on Friday following his shift. The 44-year-old husband and Father of 3 was born in Jersey City and served for the fire department for 15 years. He was also a Ground Zero responder and worked there many hours in the aftermath of 9/11.
Besides his wife, Maryann, Woods is survived by his three children, Maegan MacKenzie, James III and many family and friends.
A wake for FF Woods is being held today, 2 to 6 p.m., and tomorrow, 4 to 8 p.m., at Fallon Funeral Home, 157 Bowers St., Jersey City.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Joseph Parish, corner of Baldwin and Pavonia avenues.  
     

 

FRESNO FF INJURED AT AUTO EXTRICATION 

Sunday, December 28, 2014   A Fresno city firefighter was hurt early Saturday when he attempted to open up the roof of a vehicle following a vehicle crash.One person was pinned in the vehicle about 4 a.m. Firefighters employed the “jaws of life” extrication equipment because of significant damage to the passenger side of the vehicle, according to Fresno City Fire Department reports. The report did not provide a location for the crash, and fire officials could not be immediately reached.

During the process, one firefighter suffered a dislocated shoulder trying to remove the roof of the vehicle. Crews freed the patient from the vehicle after about 90 minutes. The patient was transported to Community Regional Medical Center with serious injuries that were not life-threatening, Fresno fire officials said.

The firefighter was treated and released from the hospital Saturday morning and is expected to make a full recovery, according to fire reports.

MAN PULLS GUN ON FFs CONDUCTING WELFARE CHECK IN AZ

Saturday, December 27, 2014     A 53-year-old Phoenix man was arrested on Thursday after pointing a gun at firefighters who were called to conduct a welfare check.Police arrested Steven Whitlock and booked him into jail on charges of aggravated assault and theft.

Phoenix police said authorities were called to an apartment complex near 17th and Missouri avenues around 2:30 p.m. on Christmas Day.

Firefighters arrived first and attempted to contact Whitlock, but he didn't immediately answer the door.

They ran out of the house and called for help and were not hurt in the fire.
It took Firefighters from nine departments to get the fire under control. All firefighter injuries were NLT.

Saturday, December 27, 2014    Below are details for the funeral/memorial services for past Inwood Fire Department Assistant Chief Joseph Sanford Jr, who tragically was killed in the Line of Duty while operating at that mutual aid dwelling fire in nearby Woodmere, last week.

For those traveling, as a point of reference, Inwood is very close to NYC's Kennedy Airport, near the Queens (NYC) / Nassau County line.

Friday, December 26, 2014   Helmet-cam video taken by Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad Captain Adam St. John and posted by Brett Russell from a house fire Monday in Burtonsville, Maryland (Montgomery County). A mayday is reported at 4:30 in the video after Firefighter Russell fell through the floor.

A fire at a home in Montgomery County injured a firefighter and displaced one family early Monday.

RESPONDING FIRE APPARATUS CRASHES WITH POLICE CAR 

Friday, December 26, 2014   An Omaha (NE) fire truck crashed into a police cruiser, injuring a police officer.  The officer was stopped at an intersection around 0300 this morning waiting for an Omaha fire truck to pass. The police officer thought the fire truck had already passed through the intersection, pulled out into the intersection, and collided with the fire truck. The fire truck struck the driver's side of the police cruiser. Another officer took the injured officer to the hospital. Police have not released the officer's condition. More to follow.


     

 

NEWPORT NEWS FF SUFFERS HEAT EXHAUSTION AT XMAS FIRE 

Thursday, December 25, 2014   One firefighter was injured while fighting a two-alarm blaze at a Newport News business early Christmas morning.

Crews arrived at the business in the 152000 block of Warwick Blvd. around 2:30 a.m.

Heavy smoke was coming from the structure when firefighters arrived.

One firefighter was taken to Riverside Regional Hospital for heat exhaustion, officials said. His condition is unknown.

No further information was immediately released.

Thursday, December 25, 2014   A firefighter was injured battling a house fire on Angela Drive in Montrose Monday morning.
According to fire officials, the fireman was transported via ambulance. The Montrose Fire Department is still on the scene fighting the blaze.
The fire began early in the morning. All occupants were out of the the three-story house by the time firefighters arrived, according to fire officials.
Heavy fire was reported on the second and third floor. Con Edison was called due to a wire on the ground, according to fire officials.
Firefighters from Ossining, Verplanck and Croton are providing assistance.
