FF Close Calls- Gee, What Kind of News Would You Call This Really?

We will have to mull over the appeal of "Firefighter Close Calls"-- it is obviously a mixture of elements, not the least of which is the suspense that is inbuilt in the lives of Firefighters.

Some FF's say they think of it " as just a job" ( which then in private they say is just something to not have to go into their deeper feelings to other people about)

Some kids start planning early to be FF's, in fact, in a country like Chile, FF's are literally born, not made, as FF families are that country's rigid tradition.

But on to the Close Calls and worse than that

NYC TAKES CONTROL OF FAILING 911 SYSTEM

Wednesday, December 3, 2014    Mayor de Blasio has finally taken the city’s problem-plagued 911 system overhaul out of the hands of private consultants and shifted its management in-house, the Daily News has learned.Over the past few weeks, de Blasio’s aides have renegotiated and sharply cut the scope of a contract with defense giant Northrop Grumman for supervision of the $2 billion project.

Only about 30 Northrop consultants will continue working on the overhaul after Jan. 1, City Hall aides said Tuesday. That’s down from 137 Northrop consultants assigned to it as recently as this summer.

Northrop, you should know, was billing taxpayers an astounding $300,000 to $430,000 annually for each of those 137 consultants.

From now on, a small committee of NYPD and FDNY brass, along with the city’s technology commissioner, Anne Roest, will directly supervise the individual subcontractors on the project, such as Motorola, Cisco Systems and Intergraph, which Northrop previous... [ more ]

Wednesday, December 3, 2014   A firefighter was taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after falling during initial efforts to put out a three-alarm house fire on Route 100.

"I don't know what his condition is yet," said Whitingham Fire Department Chief Stanley Janovsky, adding that he would not comment on the firefighters name.

Calls were made to people known to be living at the home to make certain they weren't inside during the fire. No names have been released.

"We're still trying to make that determination. We haven't found anyone inside," Janovsky said. "We're not 100 percent sure."

The cause or origin was not determined yet either as of 3 p.m. on Tuesday. The fire was still active at that time. Janovsky said there was a wood stove inside the home. The home is considered a total loss.

When Janovsky's department received word that the home was on fire, it was believed that someone could be inside.

"We have found a dog," he said.

Rosecrance Video
Wednesday, December 3, 2014   Scott Schaben started working as a suburban firefighter in the 1980s, bonding with his co-workers over off-duty beers. But his social drinking turned compulsive after he went through a divorce a few years ago, consuming his life until he knew he needed help.He ended up seeking treatment at Rosecrance, a Rockford-based recovery center that has what it bills as the nation's first treatment program aimed exclusively at firefighters and paramedics. Schaben, 52, said that being among others who knew the stresses and demands of his job was a considerable help.

"It was just like a huge load taken off my shoulders," he said. "I just felt that even though I didn't know someone, I could still talk to them. It made a big difference."

Researchers have consistently found that members of the fire service drink more than the average adult, a legacy of consumption that dates to when some firehouses doubled as the local tavern.

But when off-duty imbibing leads to add... [ more ]
