The FDNY stood alongside representatives from the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation on Dec. 26, when the charity announced they were raising funds to pay off NYPD Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu’s mortgages.

“When the Police Department grieves, the FDNY grieves,” Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said. “We have a history of coming together at times like this and that unity should spread to everyone in this city.”

Officers Liu and Ramos were killed in the line of duty on Dec. 20. The Foundation hopes to raise $800,000 for the families by New Year’s Day. In the morning of Dec. 26, they already had raised $70,000.

“Your loss is our loss,” Salvatore Cassano, former Fire Commissioner and member of the Stephen Siller Foundation’s Executive Board, said. “We want to take care of them so they don’t have to worry about anything other than healing.”

The organization, named after an FDNY firefighter who died on Sept. 11, 2001, has built numerous homes for injured veterans.

“It’s important to show that we’re coming together as a community, as New Yorkers and as Americans,” Frank Siller, Chairman and CEO of the Foundation, said. “Let’s show these families we can get this done.”
