I think that even my friend the author George Rosen is appalled these days ( "Immanence of God in the Tropics" etc.) --he has hit me with an old expression "There are many Mexicos"-- meaning
not all of Mexico is violence and drug cartels.
That's all we seem to hear--of course, what does the media love anywhere as much as Bad News?
Here is the recent Quora Posting:
#YaMeCansé Protests in Mexico (Fall - Winter 2014): What is the US doing about the violence in Mexico (November 2014)?

What the U.S. can do is limited. Mexicans are protective of their independence.
It sounds like civil society in Mexico is now having a massive reaction against the violence, which may have good results.
Although Mexico has spectacular organized crime, the murder rate and low-level gang activity is actually much higher in three Central American countries. Here unlike Mexico, the U.S. has been intimately involved including supporting right-wing governments and violence in the 1980s leading many to flee to the US; then any who commit crimes in the US have been deported back, adding to gang culture. This is why unaccompanied kids were fleeing to the US border last summer. Unlike Mexico, the U.S. needs to be directly involved in finding solutions in Central America. This is not just bad stuff happening somewhere among the world's 7 billion people; they are the only countries connected by land to us besides Canada and Mexico.
