The state investigation cited eight shortcomings in how the Houston Fire Department fought the blaze in a restaurant at the Southwest Inn, where the roof caved in 15 minutes after firefighters arrived, killing four of them. A least four of the issues cited by State more ]     Tweet   FIREFIGHTER PARAMEDIC LINE OF DUTY DEATH-SOUTH CAROLINA Monday, November 3, 2014   We regret to pas on to you that 29 year old Firefighter-Paramedic Fleming, Westview-Fairforest Fire Department (SC) suffered a heart attack in the bunkroom of the firehouse in the early morning hours of November 1st. Fleming was treated immediately by a fellow paramedic and other responders at the station and was then transported to the hospital where he went into cardiac arrest. Despite efforts to revive him, Fleming succumbed to his injury. Firefighter-Paramedic Fleming had responded to several emergency incidents and worked fire prevention activities in the hours leading up to his fatal injury. RIP.     Tweet   PIERCE FIRE APPARATUS RECALL Monday, November 3, 2014   Pierce Manufacturing is recalling 135 fire trucks in the U.S. because a suspension part can fail and cause a wheel to fall off.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in documents posted on its website this weekend that the recall covers Pierce Arrow fire trucks from the 2010 and 2011 model years. The trucks have TAK-4 front suspensions and were built from Nov. 18, 2009, through May 11, 2011. The agency began investigating the trucks in March after getting reports of a wheel falling off two aerial ladder trucks that were responding to emergency calls in Portland, Oregon, and Edmond, Oklahoma. The Wisconsin-based company also told the agency of another case in Milwaukee. Pierce will inspect the lower control arms on the trucks and replace any that are defective. But some of his former colleagues say an internal rift that has formed since his death dates back much further to long-standing departmental politics and a tinge of racial tension within Dallas Fire-Rescue. HERE is more: http://tinyurl.com/owod59f      Tweet   FIRE CHIEF SUFFERS SELF INFLICTED ACCIDENTAL GUNSHOT WOUNDS Monday, November 3, 2014  Pell City, Alabama Fire Chief Mike Burdette is recovering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg after accidentally shooting himself during firearms training.It happened shortly before 11 a.m. Friday at the FOP Lodge Firing Range. The Chief accidentally shot himself in the lower right leg as he attempted to re-holster his .40 caliber pistol. The pistol accidentally discharged as Burdette was getting up from the kneeling position. Newton said the bullet went through his right leg. He is recuperating at home now. Chief Burdette serves as the city’s fire marshal and investigates arson cases, as well as serving as the fire chief. He must maintain his weapons certification to remain APOST certified, like all law enforcement officers, so he can keep his arresting powers. We wish him a quick recovery.     Tweet   Not Just Another "Fall" Call (The Secret List) Sunday, November 2, 2014  Hey, Once in a while we share something that is not directly related to a firefighter close call. In this case, it personally struck home in three areas: 1-Our Fire-Medic crews respond to these types of runs day in and day out-as yours do. 2-My Mom "Mrs G" , who is 87, fell three times last week-once alone in her independent living apartment with very minor injuries-(she didn't want to worry anyone by pushing her "I've fallen and I can't get up" button)...and twice with one of us walking with her. She is fine...this time. 3-My father in Law "Mr H" died following a fall-he was fine, working in his yard, fell with a serious injury-died three weeks later-after 3 weeks in the hospital with, quite frankly, careless and poor care with a "he's old, he's had a good life" attitude. [ more ]     Tweet   APPARATUS CRASH IN KS Sunday, November 2, 2014  Injuries were reported when an Overland Park fire truck collided with a car Saturday afternoon. The crash happened in the intersection at 119th Street and Antioch Road about 3:45 p.m. The fire department said the fire truck was responding to a call when the wreck happened. Overland Park police said two firefighters and two people in the passenger car were taken to hospitals. Authorities said they are expected to recover. The crash is under investigation. Read more: http://www.kmbc.com/news/4-hurt-when-overland-park-fire-truck-car-collide/29482026#ixzz3HuZ1efvQ     Tweet   APPARATUS CRASH IN CLARK, CO NV - 4 INJURED Saturday, November 1, 2014  Four people were taken to University Medical Center after a Clark County Fire and Rescue vehicle and an SUV collided Friday morning near Blue Diamond Road and Durango Drive, according to Nevada Highway Patrol. The paramedics vehicle had its lights and was responding to a call at the time, according to NHP. As it was heading through the intersection, a black Chevrolet Tahoe struck it on the right side around 10:08 a.m. The Tahoe was headed south on Durango. Two paramedics were taken to UMC and are expected to be OK, NHP trooper Loy Hixson said. The male driver of the Tahoe suffered minor injuries, but a female passenger was in serious condition. The paramedics were on their way to a reported house fire in the 9100 block of Dutch Oven Court, near El Capitan Way, according to Clark County spokesman Jeff Buchanan. The crash briefly closed the intersection.     Tweet   APPARATUS TOTALED IN MO AFTER STRIKING DEER OzarkFirst.com Video Saturday, November 1, 2014  A firefighter with the Logan-Rogersville Fire Department escaped injury early Friday, after his fire truck rolled over while trying to avoid hitting a deer. Logan-Rogersville fire chief Richard Stirts tells KOLR10 News the firefighter was headed to a fire at the Buena Vista Ranch from Fire Station 4 on Highway B when a deer jumped out in front of the truck. The truck, Brush Unit 422, rolled over in the collision, but the driver was wearing a seat belt and was no injured. The number of car-deer collisions climb dramatically in the fall.  The Insurance Information Institute has tips to lessen the chances of it happening to you:     Tweet   FIREFIGHTER FOUND DEAD AFTER AGILITY TEST-FUNERAL DETAILS & UPDATE Saturday, November 1, 2014   Fern Creek, KY (Louisville area) Fire Major Malcolm Jenkins was found dead in his fire department vehicle hours after he failed to return home from a required department agility test Thursday morning. Jenkins, 53, died, in the Line of Duty, of a heart attack. FUNERAL DETAILS: Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. on Monday at Fern Creek Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Burnett Avenue Baptist Church. Major Jenkins joined the department as a volunteer in 1983 and he most recently served as the Chief Training Officer. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, three daughters, two grandchildren along with the FCFD members.     Tweet   Texas Releases Quadruple LODD Report Friday, October 31, 2014  The Texas State Fire Marshal Office released their report today into the deadliest incident in the department's history. The May, 2013 fire at the Southwest Inn Motel killed Firefighters Anne Sullivan andRobert Garner, Engineer Operator Robert Bebee, and Senior Captain Matthew Renaud in the Line of Duty. FIRE Friday, October 31, 2014  A firefighter and resident were injured in a massive apartment blaze in West Philadelphia late Thursday night. The fire broke out around 11:45 p.m at the Chestnut Park apartments on the 100 block of 62nd Street. Fire crews arrived to heavy flames shooting from the third floor of the 4-story building. Crews quickly called for a second alarm. It took about an hour and twenty minutes to get the blaze under control. The building was evacuated. 69 residents were taken by SEPTA to a Red Cross shelter at Sayre High School at 58th and Walnut Street. Both the firefighter and resident were taken to the hospital for treatment. They are in stable condition. The fire marshal is working on finding out what sparked the blaze.     Tweet   FIREFIGHTER DIES FOLLOWING TRAINING-NEW YORK Friday, October 31, 2014   We regret to pass on to you that Donald “Pete” Martin, 84, with 53 years service died yesterday. A member of the Sanborn NY Fire Company, he was at the station for mandatory department training, Firefighter Martin fell ill and other firefighters subsequently took Firefighter Martin to his residence - where 911 was called after he became unresponsive. Firefighter Martin passed away from a nature and cause of injury still to be determined. Our condolences to all affected. RIP.     Tweet   FF SUFFERS HAND BURNS IN HOUSTON ABC13.com Video Friday, October 31, 2014  One firefighter was injured battling a house fire in southeast Houston. It happened around 3:00am this morning at a home on the 7700 block of Camwood at De Leon. When firefighters arrived, smoke was coming from the two story home. As firefighters started putting out the fire, one firefighter received burns to one of his hands. He was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital and treated for his injures. The firefighter will be released from Memorial Hermann Hospital today, but he won't be on active duty for a while. He's expected to make a full recovery. No one else was injured.
