One person was killed and over a dozen others injured in a fire in Brooklyn late Tuesday night.
The city fire department says flames broke out around 12:30 a.m. on the second floor of a three-story building located at 1434 Flatbush Avenue.

The first floor of the building is the location of the Clarte Celeste Baptist Church.

"I have to pray. I know God is a good God he knows the situation," said Reverend Luckner Lorient, the church's pastor.

Neighboring congregations are also feeling the loss of a church that served area Haitians on Flatbush Avenue for more than 20 years.

"That is a shock because because I was going to work I said, 'Let me see what happened.' It looks like terrible things happened," said Reverend Joseph Felix of the Church of God Faith in Christ.
Police say the 24-year-old victim died of smoke inhalation.

Fourteen others were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries, several serious.

It took firefighters more than an hour in brutally cold temperatures to get the fire under control.
Samuel Favard, a tenant who lives on the building's second floor, says he lost everything but managed to help save his neighbor's young child.

"That's why it makes me happy. I feel good I help save the little baby," Favard said.
The FDNY says the fire is under investigation.
