"Why have holidays at all?" I asked myself. Why, other
than to make money for CVS, do we have Halloween and Thanksgiving and
Christmas? Don't we want to be thankful all the time for the good in our
lives?

It is true that life for both of us is turning a new
page, but the title of our book is still the same. We have both
struggled to challenge systems throughout our lives, and now, as we
embark on the journey of making the world a smaller and better place,
challenges are definitely going to knock on our door.

When I look back, I remember vividly the isolation I
felt before my prophylactic mastectomy and again, feeling in the extreme
minority as I was considering my extraction. I don't want other women
to feel alone just because society only shows us one view of the world.
he next Monday, another photo popped up and I was sure
it was a joke. But it wasn't. Two holes in one, two weeks in a row. And

Fueled by our fury over the responses we were getting
because we weren't BALD, a lot of us wrote TODAY back to explain how
gutted we by the fact that a lot of women are getting left out of the
conversation, by the media perpetuation that you must LOOK sick in order
to BE sick.
There is no malice in "mom." I've used the m-word many

One of my best friends lost one of
her best
friends this week. Sydney was a 13-year-old mixed-breed bundle of love
and was my friend's "soul dog." If you've ever had one of your own, you
know what I mean. I can't say I know exactly how she feels, but
unfortunately, I have an idea.
Why is it that so many feel it's more terrifying for a
father to raise a little girl instead of a boy? If I had a boy, I know
I'd be less wary of what's to come and would feel less terrified about
the day he goes off on his own. But for Avery, so many things speed

super-haves."
We have to teach our children (and ourselves) that

That summer taught me that you can have your heart
broken and still be OK; that moments of foolishness make you wise; that
part of dating is learning what you don't want; and that you have to
love yourself before anyone worthwhile ever will.

It's hard not to fall into sexism as the mother of sons.
It's hard not to look at your friend's daughters as potential wives to
your future head of the household. I know, I know, you can't say it. But
you think it when no one is looking.
Environmental changes, medications and allergen

AmeriCorps members have completed over one billion hours
of service since 1994, and have had an immense impact on mobilizing
communities to work together for a more promising future. As a former
VISTA volunteer, I know firsthand the tremendous impact volunteering can
have for both the volunteer and the community.
