FFS AND COPS DRIVING MORE DISTRACTED THAN EVER

Monday, October 6, 2014  Distracted drivers of emergency vehicles were to blame in collisions that killed three Southland residents and injured about 140 others in California over the last two years, according to a state database and local reporting.

These drivers of police cars, fire trucks and ambulances caused at least 180 traffic collisions in the state last year — or about one every other day — up from 165 collisions in 2012, according to data from the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System that is run by the California Highway Patrol.

In fact, the number of collisions involving distracted emergency vehicle drivers on public roads who were at-fault increased by 122 percent over the last decade coinciding with a meteoric rise in technology.

“Black-and-whites now are equipped with more equipment that affords faster and more accurate information to officers but at the same time provides a certain degree of distraction while driving,... [ more ]

AERIAL INTO POWER LINES DURING TRUCK CHECKS IN CA

Monday, October 6, 2014  SYNOPSIS

On the morning of Sunday October 5, 2014, the Operator of Tuck 16, standing on the turntable, was preforming his morning readiness check of the aerial and during his check the ladder was rotated to the right, and extended over the power lines that are in adjacent lot north of the fire station.  The upper fly/egress section of the ladder was above the power lines, when without warning, the 60Kv line arched to the tip of the truck, creating a loud explosion and knocking the power out to the fire station.

The operator was uninjured but transported to the ER as a precaution for medical check out and evaluation.

NARRATIVE

At approximately 0930 hours, the Operator of Truck 16 pulled the truck on the front ramp to conduct his routine morning checks of the vehicle and part of the check including flying the aerial.

As required by standard procedure, the jack pads, which where the aluminum style, we... [ more ]

The fire broke out at approximately 0430 hrs today on the 1800 block of East Denney's Road. Several tanker trucks carrying water were called to the scene due to a lack of fire hydrants in the area. ALBANY, NY PLAN WOULD CLOSE DOWN LADDER COMPANY

CBS Albany Video
Sunday, October 5, 2014  There is controversy days after Albany's mayor rolled out the city's budget plan. The issue is over how the city plans to meet roughly $176 million in demands. “When we get [an] alarm of fire we dispatch three engine companies, two ladder companies, the heavy rescue and a paramedic rig and the battalion chief,” Albany Fire Chief Warren Abriel said. But firefighters could soon be dealing with a smaller pool of apparatus. The budget looks to close Ladder No. 1, which Mayor Kathy Sheehan says will save the city $1.2 million in overtime costs without laying anyone off. Abriel says the change will not necessarily affect response time but he admits it may require Albany to ask for more mutual aid. “We wouldn't have the buffer with the extra ladder truck,” Abriel said. Still, Abriel says it's the best option the department has in terms of closing a $1.3 million budget gap. “Not any chief or any city official would want to take a company out of service,” Abriel sa...
