While operating at an accident scene out rig was struck. All members(except for the LCC) had dismounted the rig and were assisting EMS and PD at a minor accident when this occurred. The LCC was belted and not injured. The car never hit it's brakes(no skid marks) if not for proper rig placement this could have been a much different outcome.       Tweet   FIRE LIEUTENANT STRUCK WHILE CHANGING TIRE-ENROUTE TO WORK Lt Johns RIP Tuesday, September 30, 2014  We regret to advise you that a veteran Fort Lauderdale firefighter commuting to work died this morning when he stopped to change a flat tire on the shoulder of Interstate 95 and a vehicle struck him. Lt. Kevin K. Johns was headed in for duty when the accident happened just after 7 a.m. along I-95 South, near the Yamato Road exit, officials said. Johns, 48, was taken to Delray Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:09 p.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol. He was a highly decorated lieutenant and 29-year veteran of the department. Johns was preparing to change a flat tire and was standing at the right rear corner of his vehicle, situated on the shoulder of I-95, the Highway Patrol said. The accident happened when the driver of a 2007 Hyundai Sonata tried to avoid rear-ending a 2011 Toyota RAV4, which had slowed for traffic ahead on southbound I-95, the Highway Patrol said. [ more ]     Tweet   KY FF HURT IN BRIDGE COLLAPSE Tuesday, September 30, 2014  Two Martin County firefighters believe they are lucky to be alive after the fire truck they were riding in fell through a bridge and into a creek. Members of the Warfield Volunteer Fire Department responded to a house fire early Monday morning in the Pilgrim community, about 10 miles south of Warfield. Rhonda Estepp and Gregory Alley were riding in the department's main fire engine when they tried to cross a bridge on Blackburn Cemetery Road. "The next thing I know, the cab of the engine is tilting up into the air," Alley said. "It's a little blurry after that. I mostly remember red lights, hill side and then water rushing into the cab of the engine." The bridge collapsed, sending the fire truck into the creek below. Alley, the driver, helped Estepp escape while he remained trapped with the water rising rapidly. more ]       WKYT.com Video Tweet   Manhattan Storefront Shatters When FDNY Truck Tire Blows Monday, September 29, 2014  A tire from an FDNY truck blew suddenly Monday afternoon, and the pressure from the tire shattered a nearby storefront window on the Lower East Side, injuring several bystanders, officials say. The truck was in front of 160 Delancy St. when something caused the tire to blow, fire officials on the scene said. The pressure from the tire broke a nearby clothing store window, but the tire remained attached to the truck. Three people were hurt, but refused medical treatment at the scene, officials said. ... Daniel Costa liked to go all out on the racquetball court at the LAX fire station. A fellow firefighter described him as a "very competitive" player who "likes to win." Costa seemed in fine form after five spirited games in the fall of 2011. So his supervisor was skeptical when Costa, then 53, said he'd hurt his knee on the court and needed time off, according to a report by investigators for the city attorney's office. Costa was out on injury leave for a year, collecting his full salary, tax-free. In 2009, he took a nearly year-long paid leave after a run-in at the fire station with subordinates he described as "bullies." He complained of chest pain, high blood pressure and other symptoms, state records show. Monday, September 29, 2014  When Dallas firefighter Stanley Wilson died battling a condo blaze last year, everything fell apart — from the building where he was trapped to his commanders’ questionable orders.Miscues, miscommunication and missed opportunities contributed to Wilson’s death inside a far northeast Dallas apartment on May 20, 2013, according to two investigative reports released this month. And now two former North Texas fire chiefs have expressed concerns about tactics like those described in the reports. The reports — one from the state fire marshal’s office, the other a Dallas Fire-Rescue line-of-duty death examination — lay much of the blame on a deputy chief in charge of the fire response, as well as on other commanders at the scene. [ more ]     Tweet   2 FFs INJURED AT ALASKA CONDO FIRE Monday, September 29, 2014  Two Anchorage firefighters were taken to a hospital Thursday with minor injuries suffered while battling a blaze in East Anchorage, said a fire department spokesman. The flames ignited in a three-story condo at 6712 Lunar Drive, leased by oil and gas fiscal consultant Brad Keithley. Keithley recently gained attention after announcing he would spend $200,000 of his own money to influence state legislative races this fall. Keithley said Thursday evening he was unsure where the flames started. He had been eating lunch while packing for a trip to California. Smoke detectors sounded inside his condo, though he thought they were just malfunctioning. Then a neighbor knocked on his door and told him that his home was on fire. Fire crews dispatched to the condominium complex after a 911 call reported the flames at 1:47 p.m., said Al Tamagni, fire department spokesman. [ more ]     Tweet   3RD ALM IN PA - FF TOUCHES LINES WITH LADDER Saturday, September 27, 2014  3rd Alarm with Special Call 525 North 1st Street Shamokin, Pa 13:45 NCCC dispatched a 1st alarm for a working structure fire at 525 North 1st street, Shamokin. Upon arrival of first in units the alarm was upgraded to a confirmed incident to 2nd then 3rd alarm with special calls for additional manpower. Vinyl on neighboring structures melted due to the heat. 2 FF suffered minor injured while 1 required transport to an area Hospital for heat exhaustion, stated Jason Zimmerman, deputy chief of the Shamokin Fire Bureau. Saturday, September 27, 2014  The Boca Raton (Palm Beach County) Firefighters' union wants the city to butt out of firefighters' smoking habits. After 24 years of contract prohibitions against firefighters using tobacco — on or off the job — Boca Raton's fire union wants to change the contract so they can light up without consequences. Currently, firefighters who use tobacco can be fired. Union officials say they want to bring the firefighters' contract more in line with the requirements for firefighter certification under Florida law. State law requires that new firefighter hires be tobacco-free for at least a year before hiring, but the law is silent on what happens after they're hired. The Boca union's proposed change that would affect 186 unionized firefighters is among the outstanding issues that led the city last week to declare an impasse in its negotiations with Boca Raton's publicsafety unions.
