Competition Entry: OYO’s Kortrijk Campus Scheme Awarded Second Prize

OYO – Open Y Office, together with Arch&Teco, has received second prize among nine participants in an invited competition for a new Howest campus building in .
“We envision this new campus as an interactive field where we catch the classrooms in the middle; conceived as areas of focus. This field contains lecture rooms, informal meeting spaces, restaurant, bar, shop and lounge areas and wraps around the area of focus; connecting the park all the way up to the roof garden where students, teachers, alumni, companies and neighbors are invited to shop and exchange knowledge.”

Video: Raul Pantaleo Discusses the Port Sudan Paediatric Centre

In this video, Raul Pantaleo, co-founder of Italian practice Studio Tamassociati, discusses the award-winning Port Sudan Paediatric Centre, which recently won first prize in the Zumtobel Group Award’s Buildings category. The remote clinic was commissioned by the NGO “Emergency” and is one of the few facilities to provide free care for children in the region.

Argentine architect César Pelli (born October 12, 1926) is known for designing some of the tallest buildings in the world, including the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, the Torre Cristal in Madrid and Costanera Center in Santiago, Chile.

DEFACED Makes a Stand Against Controversial Demolition of NYC Graffiti Mecca

Upon the announcement of the imminent demolition of 5 Pointz, the internationally renown mecca in Long Island City, New York, a group of young designers - Arianna Armelli, Ishaan Kumar, David Sepulveda and Wagdy Moussa – joined together to form DEFACED, “a theoretical project designed to ask the question of whether an organization for the preservation of cultural relics of New York and cities around the world can be formed and implemented.” The group focuses on the gentrification of New York City’s cityscape and its accompanying sociopolitical issues, along with the protection of cultural landmarks and districts around the world.

The Latest 99% Invisible: Hundertwasser and His Fight Against the Godless Line

In the latest episode of his 99% Invisible podcast, digs into the work of lesser-known architect Tausendsassa Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser. Often cited for his colorful and curvilinear forms, his name translates to “Multi-Talented Peace-Filled Rainy Day Dark-Colored Hundred Waters.” In everything from his name to his unusual ideas put forth in manifestos, it is immediately evident that Hundertwasser was no ordinary architect. Spotlight: Richard Meier

Richard Meier, the Pritzker Prize and AIA Gold Medal winning architect, is well known for his abstracted, often white, buildings and unrelenting personal design philosophy. Citing Bernini and Borromini as influences as well as Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, Meier received his Bachelor in Architecture from Cornell University in 1957 and took jobs with Skidmore Owings and Merrill and Marcel Breuer soon after his graduation. He began his own private practice in New York in 1963 and rocketed to architectural fame in the early 1970s, after being named as one of the “New York Five.”

EDA Breaks Ground on the University of Utah’s Newest Place to “Live, Work, and Create”

A collaboration of EDA Architects, Yazdani Studio of Cannon Design, and Arup, the University of Utah’s newest project for the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute – “Lassonde Studios” – has broke ground. Slated as a space to live, work, and create, the building supports the mission to make the Lassonde Institute an international destination for student entrepreneurs, innovators and “makers.” The Studios will open for students in fall of 2016.

Competition Entry: SCStudio Transforms Budapest Park into “Urban Archipelago”

As part of the Liget Competition, SCStudio has shared their entry for the House of Hungarian Music. A transformation of an existing city park, the project is conceived as a sequence of cultural programs – an “urban archipelago” – connected by a “naturalistic promenade” of pathways and landscape within a preserved forested area.

Video: Alejandro Aravena on PRES Constitución and Rebuilding After Disaster

Santiago-based architect Alejandro Aravena of Elemental discusses the sustainable reconstruction of Constitución in following a devastating earthquake in 2010. Given just 100 days to design a resilient masterplan, capable of protecting the city against future natural disasters, Elemental implemented a natural solution: planting a forest that would protect the city from future floods. The design has since receive international recognition, most recently being awarded first prize in the Zumtobel Group Award’s Urban Development & Initiatives category.

Red Architecture Wins Top New Zealand Prize for “Innovative Black Barn”

Red Architecture’s “innovative black barn” has been awarded the ADNZ‘s (Architectural Designers New Zealand) 2014 Supreme National Design Award for its “subtle, economical and clever design.” Located in the beautiful rural landscape of Whatawhata in the Waikato, the project houses a private residence and garage within two “crisp barn-like forms” clad in vertical run steel and recycled bricks taken from the devastation caused by the Christchurch earthquakes.
In addition to the Supreme Award winner, eight designs from across the country were presented Resene Architectural Design Awards at the ceremony. View a glimpse of each awarded project, after the break.
