A surprising number of firefighters are suing homeowners for
injuries suffered while performing rescues and putting out fires,
according to a report by NBC New York.
One attorney has represented as many as 40 firefighters in the tri-state area who are holding homeowners responsible for their injuries. Some cases have settled for as much as $450,000.
A previous city law stated that firefighters assume a risk when battling fires. But that law was abolished in the 1960s when several landlords in the Bronx burned down their own buildings to collect the insurance money.
The FDNY and firefighters union did not disclose to NBC New York how many lawsuits have been filed.
