past weekend a few of the Leatherhead Mafia staff traveled to Baltimore
Inner Harbor, Maryland for the 2014 Firehouse Expo. While we were there

The
firefighters of the United Kingdom are fighting a different battle than
fire these days. The firefighters are currently striking against
attacks on their pensions. According to the Fire Brigades Union (FBU)
website “The firefighters’ dispute has continued for months as
firefighters are facing the imposition of a pension that ignores the
physical demands of the job they do.” With little negotiation and
flexibility from the government the FBU has taken action and
firefighters across the UK have gone on strike.

Optix International Brand Apparel Product Review
Lately,
it seems as though everyone is recycling decommissioned fire hose. I
have seen belts, wallets, tool pouches, and cell phone sleeves made. One
of the companies leading this trend is Optix International. What stood
out to me about Optix International is that the fire department who
decommissioned the hose receives a portion of the proceeds made. Not to
mention that they are made right here in the good ol’ USA, cannot beat
that.

Conforming to the Citizen’s Expectations of the Fire Service
When
a person calls 911 no matter how minor or catastrophic the call may
seem it could very well be the worst day of the caller’s life. It could
be a family member hurt after a fall, someone unresponsive, or a
neighbor’s house on fire, no matter what the nature of the call may be
we must handle every situation with professionalism. We must do our job
to the best of our ability and as proficient as we can because that is

Pushing Through Tragedy – Why We Continue To Serve
We
are often asked why we do it. Why do we leave our hot meals on the
table only to return hours later to find your family asleep and your
dinner cold? We sometimes cannot find the one answer as to why we do
this job, because day after day that answer changes. So many calls test
our faith; our faith in humanity, our faith in god, and the hardest,
faith in ourselves. The emotional stress and drain we put on our
families and our jobs is greater than we realize sometimes.

their officers and leaders. For the vast majority of departments,
officers are elected by the rest of the membership. Are these elections
fair or just a popularity contest? There will never be a 100% perfect
system, but we can strive to ensure the best qualified individuals are

A
growing fad throughout the fire service is painting the bottoms of
helmets with something you take pride in. Designs such as the American
flag, state flags, charity causes, etc. However, as time goes on, the
paint fades or cracks from the heat and abuse our helmets take. It is
part of what we do and nothing will change that...or will it?
