FDNY Swears in New Class of Probationary Firefighters
The Probationary Firefighters take the Oath of Office.
A new class of Probationary FDNY Firefighters was sworn in at the
Fire Academy on July 14, marking the start of their rigorous 18 weeks of
training.
“I want you to know how grateful I am – and how grateful the people
of this city are – that you chose to join the Fire Department,” Mayor
Bill de Blasio said during the ceremony on Randall’s Island. “You remind
us what courage is.”
Women and people of color comprise 37 percent of the class. Among
them, 14 percent identify as black, 20 percent as Hispanic and two
percent as Asian. The class also includes five women.
This past decade, the Fire Department has doubled the number of firefighters from minority backgrounds serving in New York City.

“Commit, for a lifetime, to the FDNY – it’s a 24/7 job, forever,”
Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said. “You are on your way to something
special.”
At the Academy, classes are extensively trained in all aspects of
their job, including fire suppression and medical response, hazardous
materials, collapse and confined space rescue training, and auto
extrication, as well as building inspections and procedures for engine
and ladder operations.
“It’s your turn now to come together as a class,” Chief of Department
Edward Kilduff said. “You are now part of one of the best fire
departments in the country. And I know you are up to the challenge.”
