The 17-year-old Flemish girl, Axelle Despiegelaere, whose pictures from the World Cup went round the world, has signed a contract with the cosmetics brand L'Oréal. The Fleming will front one of L’Oréal's product lines.

The incident-packed 5th stage of the Tour de France, between the Belgian city of Ieper and the French town of Arenberg, was bad news for several riders. The British favourite Chris Froome abandoned the race, while numerous others crashed as continuous rain created hazardous circumstances. While the Belgians could not manage a stage victory, there was good news for GC rider Jurgen Van den Broeck, whose aim is the top-3 in Paris.

Motorists in Lennik outside Brussels were in for a surprise this morning as fire-fighters battled to free a pregnant woman who had crashed her car into a ditch. The car remained standing upright on its nose.

No whisky for Queen Mathilde

10/07/14 - Queen Mathilde named a new Belgian navy patrol boat at Port Zeebrugge on Thursday. Unlike Britain's Queen Elizabeth who used whisky last week, Belgium's Queen Mathilde stuck with the traditional champagne.

Flemish scouts not equal to Walloon elements

10/07/14 - Flemish scouts are a hardy bunch, but after two straight days of rain they had little option but to throw in the towel and give in to the elements. Tents pitched in Jalhay (Wallonia) were dismantled and the camp was abandoned.

Surge in drivers putting off car inspection

Motoring organisations are sounding the alarm in connection with the surge in drivers who are failing to get the roadworthiness of their vehicle checked on time. The associations say that too many people are saving out on the car inspection.

9/7/14 - Ieper is the capital of Great War tourism attracting large crowds day in day out, but on Wednesday the city amid the battlefields gained an added attraction: the departure of the Tour de France.

Belgian terrorist suspect held in Luxembourg

A special intervention squad of the Luxembourg police have detained a Belgian national and Syria-fighter, who is suspected of having joined the Islamist terrorist group ISIS. The suspect is thought to have returned to Europe in 2012 with the intention of recruiting new members for the organisation that has now proclaimed an Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.
