Japan—Magma bombs explode, forked lightning flashes, and
ash clouds billow as the 3,665-foot-tall Sakurajima volcano erupts in
Kyushu. Dried lava flows from a massive blast in 1914 connect the former
island to the Osumi Peninsula.
