Marijuana Based Medecine- WNYC

Marijuana-Based Medicine for Children to be Tested in New York

Tuesday, June 03, 2014

New York children who have drug-resistant seizures may be able to take a marijuana-based medication, if new clinical trials are successful.

The Cuomo administration will work with a British firm, GW Pharmaceuticals, to conduct the trials for children whose medical conditions have not responded to other treatments.

New York is the second state in the country to start trials for treatment with the marijuana extract, which is known as cannabidiol or CBD. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed a law last September allowing edible forms of marijuana to be sold to minors who have life-threatening illnesses.

However, a WNYC investigation in April found that New Jersey still has not given the marijuana dispensaries permission to sell edibles, and that many parents of children with severe seizures are opting to obtain the extracts illegally.
