Charles Michel in "kamikaze" mission?

King Filip has appointed the Francophone liberal Charles Michel as the new "informateur". His task will be to take soundings from the different parties in order to find out which federal coalition government could be possible. The task of an informateur is to pave the way to become a "formateur" to start the actual talks to form a new government in a next phase. It seems highly unlikely though that Mr Michel succeeds. Analysts express serious doubts about his chances. The VRT's Johny Vansevenant even labels it as "a kamikaze mission" which is expected to end in a new stalemate.

27/06/14 - EU leaders eventually appointed Jean-Juncker as the new president of the European Commission. The outgoing Belgian PM Di Rupo is a fan and would support Juncker's bid, he said on Friday morning before the decision was taken. The EU also signed a pact with Georgia, Moldavia and Ukraine, while Stubb sent the British a wake-up call. (speaking at the end are Petro Poroshenko and Herman Van Rompuy).

27/06/14 - EU dignitaries assembled in the city of Ieper before the actual start of the European summit. In a symbolic visit, they attended a Last Post ceremony and highlighted peace before having dinner in the Ieper city hall, which was completely devastated during the Great War some 100 years ago.

In an unprecedented vote forced on EU leaders by British Prime Minister David Cameron, the European Council has voted 26-2 to nominate Luxembourg's Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the executive European Commission. The decision was announced by the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, in his closing speech.

27/06/14 - It was a rollercoaster evening for Belgian football fans on Friday. The party atmosphere began before the match against South Korea, but there was no reason to celebrate during the match. That is, until the final 10 minutes, when Jan Vertonghen scored for the Red Devils. His goal triggered a big party. All's well that ends well.

The South Korean Embassy has installed a giant television screen at the Drie Linden Stadium in Watermaal-Bosvoorde to allow fans to enjoy South Korea's World Cup match again Belgium that kicks off this evening at 10pm. In addition to being able to enjoy the match, visitors to the Drie Linden Stadium will also be able to take part in a number of cultural activities that have been laid on by the embassy and the Korean Cultural Centre in Brussels.
