An Upper West Side intersection where two pedestrians were killed earlier this year is getting a Vision Zero overhaul.
Officials unveiled the changes to 96th Street and Broadway Tuesday morning. The intersection now has more space for pedestrians in the Broadway median, which doubles as a subway station entrance. The Department of Transportation has also retimed traffic lights, curtailed left turns and created a new crosswalk.
"We're hoping these simplifications will make traffic movements more predictable and make the intersection easier to use for everybody," said Polly Trottenberg, Commissioner of the city's Department of Transportation.
The changes were hailed by Paul Steely White, the head of Transportation Alternatives. "Hardly a week goes by that motorists are not striking, killing, injuring people in crosswalks and on sidewalks," he said. "Now finally we are getting some action."
