The Budget Is Settled — Now It's Time for Labor Contracts

Fresh off weeks of budget battles in Albany, Mayor Bill de Blasio is putting his negotiating skills to the test yet again with a focus on settling open labor contracts.

At a sit down with City Hall radio reporters on Tuesday, de Blasio said his “central focus” when it comes to the 152 open labor contracts is figuring out how to respect the city workers while protecting the interests of the taxpayers. That means finding savings from things like health care.

“Right now we spend a lot on health care for our employees and we think there are ways to do that better,” de Blasio told the group.

De Blasio said the conversations with labor leaders are ongoing. More than 300,000 city employees have been working under expired labor contracts.
