Kristen Wiig and director Liza Johnson talk about their new film, “Hateship Loveship.”
Kristen Wiig plays Johanna, a profoundly shy woman who is hired by Mr.
McCauley as a housekeeper and a primary caregiver to teenager Sabitha.
Sabitha tricks her father and Johanna to develop a pseudo-relationship,
never dreaming of the potential harm to either party. “Hateship
Loveship” opens on April 11 at IFC Center.
Director Liza Johnson said it made perfect sense to cast an
actor known for comedy in the lead role: “I think comedy – we love it
because it’s funny, but also it is meaningful.” And funny is something
that writer Alice Munro does well: “She has a wicked, dry sense of
humor…And I think everyday life has humor in it. Drama can have moments
of lightness and warmth.”
“I really enjoyed playing this character who was so quiet,” said Wiig. “It’s a different muscle, because being at Saturday Night Live for so long you get used to, you know, your goal is to get a different reaction from people.”
Wiig talked about her days on SNL, including her audition. “I just tried to squeeze in as many characters and voices as I could.” She did Target Lady, Aunt Linda from Weekend Update, a Megan Mullally impression, and “I did this weird Russian baker that never made the show. I can’t even remember the rest.”
