Dear Mayor de Blasio,
Please help save our public libraries. Reverse the current process of library sales and shrinkage in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Last July, standing on the steps of the 42nd Street Library, you promised to demand alternatives to the expensive, inefficient, and destructive Central Library Plan, a plan that would require over $150 million of city funding. I call on you to follow through on your much-appreciated commitment by taking these steps:
Stop the planned demolition of the historic seven-story book stacks at the 42nd Street Research Library, so that the world-class research collection can be returned to serve scholars, students, and citizens of New York. Renovate the existing Mid-Manhattan Library, rather than selling this amazing public asset and shrinking its replacement into a reduced space at 42nd Street. Reconsider the sale of the Science, Industry and Business Library. Instead of spending $150 million of taxpayers’ money to disfigure the treasured 42nd Street Library, the city should invest its resources in renovating and maintaining the branch libraries that serve every New York community.
Additionally, please encourage landmark designation of the beloved Pacific Branch Library in Brooklyn to ensure it continues to be a thriving neighborhood resource. Stop the short-sighted sale of the Brooklyn Heights Branch and its replacement by a condo in a luxury high-rise. Throughout the city, our existing libraries function beautifully as civic centers for our neighborhoods. Please don’t replace them with storefronts at the bottom of private condominium towers (already the sad fate of the much-loved Donnell Library).
Finally, I ask you to give New York’s library systems a designated line in the city budget to ensure them a reliable source of funding and to enable intelligent planning for their future. Strong libraries are essential to a vital, inclusive city!
