WASHINGTON -- Mitt Romney came to Hillary Clinton's defense Sunday amid Republican efforts to resurrect the Monica Lewinsky scandal ahead of a possible Clinton presidential bid in 2016.
Romney said while former President Bill Clinton had "embarrassed" the nation, his wrongdoing would not be relevant to his wife were she to run for the office.
"I don't think Bill Clinton is as relevant as Hillary Clinton if she decides to run for president," Romney said on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday. "She has her own record and her own vision."
"I think Hillary Clinton, if she becomes the nominee, will have plenty to discuss about her own record," he added. "I don't imagine that Bill Clinton is going to be a big part of it."
In recent weeks, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has been particularly vocal about Bill Clinton's affair with then-intern Lewinsky, calling it "predatory behavior." Paul has even said donors should boycott Bill Clinton, whom Paul called a "serial philanderer" who will pose problems for Democrats if they want to continue the "GOP War on Women" narrative in upcoming elections.
Romney said Hillary Clinton would be judged on her own record as former secretary of state. "During that period of time, did our relations with nations around the world elevate America and elevate our interests, or were they receding?" Romney asked. "And I think her record is what she will be judged upon, not the record of her husband."
