It is funny how it really is hit or miss with these places and who they appeal to and who cannot stand them
I would say good reviews with some minor demurrals...no horror stories that I saw here really
Most people give these three to four stars and a good number like it even better than that I would say, even though they did not officially give it five stars

Great boutique hotel in the Murray Hill area. Convenient location to the 6 train. Breakfast included until 10am
I booked them through http://quikbook.com and got a fantastic deal. Rooms are on the small side, but really, why would you spend all your time in the room. You're in NYC! We were on the second floor in a renovated room and were very satisfied. Our room even had a cute chandelier and the finishings were tastefully done.
The hotel is a great base for everything. The 6 is a 2 minute walk. Murray Hill and all the fantastic Indian places (Haandi!) is around the corner. Customer service was fantastic.-

Austin, TXThis hotel is absolutely fantastic if you are on a budget but want to stay in a fun, cute place that is in an easily accessible area. It is an easy, cheap cab ride to most Manhattan areas and right next to the 4, 5, 6 train. It was also walkable distance to a lot of places (if you like to walk). It was a quick walk down to Union Square, 5th street shopping, and over to Chelsea, a little longer but enjoyable walk to Central Park.
Our room was very clean and spacious (for NYC) with a FANTASTIC view of the city. We opted for the executive double room- booked it for a reasonable price on their website using the 45 days out special. My friends stayed on a lower level (in a single) and said their room was very small with a view of a wall- SO, if space and view is important, opt for a bigger room. However, it is NYC not Toledo Ohio- the room is just for sleeping!
The complimentary breakfast was very good and had a lot of options.
The staff was extremely friendly. We were granted an early check-in and a late check-out at no cost and the staff was very courteous and respectful.
I also love that you don't wait for the elevator. I have stayed in some of those higher end, huge hotels in NYC- and trust me- this smaller little boutique experience is far less frustrating.
There were some minor things that were inconsistent or slightly annoying (like low water pressure showers and weird variances in the air conditioning- but again- it's NYC and a historic building so who cares) as well as missing items from the room but were brought quickly when requested.
I had a tough time choosing between 4 and 5 stars- this is not a fancy hotel but it is very nice. You definitely get A LOT of bang for your buck at this place but I cannot mislead with saying it is a 5 star property- but it was a 5 star experience for the price.
I will most definitely be staying here the next time I come to NYC. -

The staff is fantastic, the hotel bar is nails (with great Jazz music on weekend evenings), it's next door to a great bagel place, and very easy access to the 6 Train or the N,Q,R Train. We'll be staying here again for sure. -

Rockville, MDI have only good things to say about my visit to this boutique hotel in Murray Hill. I found it online when looking for hotels with one-night availability that wouldn't give me a migraine when I saw their NYC-rates. Well, I found it. Really cute hotel. The staff were super nice and efficient. The room was small (which is to be expected in space-challenged NYC) however, our room did fit two double beds and our bathroom was recently renovated and was really nice. The staff turn down your beds and leave a mint on your pillow and make sure the room is a comfortable temperature when you arrive. The reservation includes a free breakfast--and not some skimpy continental breakfast with a few offerings. The breakfast was three hours long and hosted in the Black Duck restaurant in the hotel. Lots of choices of cold/hot breakfast. Plenty of room to sit down and eat (you could even sit outside on the street-level patio). Speaking of deals, if you want to eat at the Black Duck (which I wish we would have) the hotel offers two free drinks at the Black Duck upon check-in. It was a great experience overall--and not a very expensive one either. I'm going back! -

Boston, MAGreat hotel in a very convenient part of NYC. Close to everything but located on a fairly quiet street - this is a real gem. You can find the best Indian and Turkish food a few steps away - a train station half a block away - and a good little in house bar, free breakfast, and a staff that really cares about making your stay enjoyable.
By standards of the rest of the country - the rooms are a little on the small side. But by NYC standards, they are great. The bigger point is they are clean - well kept - with very recent renovations on the common areas, elevators etc. Here is hoping the prices dont go up because of all this - as this is one of the few places in NYC where you can get a sub $300 room and not feel like you are sleeping at the YMCA.
I have stayed here 5 or 6 times in the last 18 month and having nothing but good things to say. My favorite hotel in NYC. -

Waltham, MANice hotel overall.
The front desk was attentive and very nice. Doormen were also very nice :-) Had to valet the car which wasn't too bad, though pricey.
The rooms are TEENY - at least by my standards. You get a small path around the bed and a little hall at the doorway. Not much else. Decent amenities, not a view, though because it's in the middle of the block so we got a concrete wall.
The location is great for the sites but not amazing for a stroll around the hotel necessarily. You have a Duane Read and McDonald's at the corner.
If you stay here, definitely try out the vegetarian restaurant Vatan = AMAZING! -

Queens Village, Queens, NYI came here for a Pregame birthday party. It's dimly lit and small but if looking for somewhere in the city to sleep (or pregame) this is fine.
The room I was in had two queens sized bed, a huge tv, and was spotless (aside from the confetti and alcohol placed all over the room in honor of the birthday girl).
The bathroom was big and the mirror was perfect for photo ops.
The lobby area is very dark. Like extremely. We stepped in there and had to keep our hands out to make sure we didn't run into anything. The guy at the front desk was friendly. It was also very easy to catch a cab out front.
I don't think we were that loud but of course you can't trust my judgement on that. Neighbors or some other losers complained, so they called us and asked us to keep it down (just as we were signing happy birthday. How rude!) The employee that called was nice about it and polite.
Anyways everything else here was pretty cool. I'm not sure about pricing but if I was trying to stay somewhere in the city for a nice night out I'd def look into this place. -

Los Angeles, CAI've noticed a couple of pretty emphatic 1 star reviews on the Park South.
While I am not discounting what these peeps are saying (b/c i was not there to experience it), I can say one thing with impunity, being a native East Coaster---'LOOK-- this is NYC, it's an urban jungle, a darwinian survivalist pot o steaming red hot soup, spicy with flava and attitude. That's what makes it so exasperating yet exhilarating at the same time. And btw, sometimes when people are raising their voices, making demostrative statements, and wild gestures, frowning, and even yelling, it's often a sign they're being NICE!'
ok, having said that, I have had really good experiences at the Park South. Sure it's a business style hotel whose rooms aren't exactly of the exciting modernist spaces and designs i usually seek out for accommodations, but i can offer several tips and good points about the place.
1. ROOMS: Yes, they're uninspiring, but this historial building has character and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Also, if you'd like to avoid being in cramped room, make sure you reserve at least a queen room.
2. PRICE: For what you get, relative to sky high manhattan hotel rates, i've found the price to be comparably affordable.
3. LOCATION: Dood, this is the fucking point of staying here in the first place! I mean, you've got clean rooms, and decent amenities, which is not always a given in NYC unless you're staying in bonafied 4 or 5 star establishments.
You roll out the door and you're right in the middle of Murray (Curry) Hill, head south and right away you're in Grammercy, and it's a reasonably do-able walk up and down and all around either midtown or lower manhattan.
I'm Gump like that so, living in La-La Land, I always seize the opportunity to get out at street level, throw on the comfortable duds and do my urban hiking thang.
For the weather-challenged or more formal days/evenings, just hump a cab right outside or hit the subway a block or so away.
4. LOBBY: Sure there's no concierge but for DIY types like me, i make my own adventures. And the lobby's cozy enough to chill for a bit if you're waiting for someone, but usually, a boutique affordable manhattan hotel's main selling point is not a swank lobby.
5. RESTAURANT/BAR: The Black Duck is a pretty intimate chill spot for a cocktail at the bar. I've had some insanely hilarious encounters with some real characters at this place, including one middle-aged woman who told me her life story from the sordid wily ways of paralegalism and then to all the drama drama, and more drama of her 2nd 'career' as a psychotherapist with a bent for...you guessed it...drama! Psycho-therapist--how a propos! apparently she's a well-known regular there. I can't speak for the food, but it looks just kinda sort average...best to grab a drink or three after your biz for the day is done, then roll out and experience better culinary adventures...

Somerville, MAI give this 3 stars because it is a 3 star hotel and that is exactly what it is.
My boyfriend and I stayed here when he took me back to visit my long lost city for my birthday. It was DEFINITELY decent enough, especially considering the Travelzoo discount. (which had actually expired the day before, but they were kind enough to honor the price)
You're central to most things that matter in the city, and close to a train to get you to all those extremities.
Personally, I'm not too picky and it doesn't take a lot to make me happy, but there aren't a lot of fringes here, but why would you need fringes anyways, you're in NYC, get out of your hotel room.
The continental breakfast was on the higher scale of continentals I'd experienced, even though no one filled the coffee the entire time we sat there and waited.
Overall it was a great experience, unless I was looking for a super cheap hostel situation, I'd definitely come to this place again.
BTW Lan G, the hallways smell like Indian food because the hotel is in Curry Town. You didn't notice the probably 200 Indian restaurants in the 3 block radius? -

Very quaint + clean hotel. I love how it feels like I'm walking into a miniature luxury hotel. The room is a bit small (but that's a given I guess in NY) - but has a huge fluffy bed and pillows. Great views if you're on the higher floors.
The bathrooms are very posh - I took several of their free shampoos and lotions because I liked them so much. =) Oh yeah and the heater doesn't have an annoying hum to it... I hate when that happens!
Also liked the idea that they served breakfast in their bar/dining room. Cold breakfast, but has a lot to offer -hams, cheeses, fruits, bagels, cereal, milk, OJ....
The ambiance really lends itself to reflection time - there's an outside sitting area to just people watch or read a book. The inside area is dim and some of dining tables are booths. I wanted to sink in and sleep there... =)
Oh yeah, free wi-fi. Free storage space even after you check out. Within walking distance to awesome bakeries, farmer's market and the subway.
Price is about $200/ night (we got a discount through http://travelzoo.com). I thought it was smancy. Then again, I'm not too hard to please. =p
It's just that it's really pricey. I guess that's NYC for ya... =| -

Washington, DCWe got this room for pretty cheap on Travelzoo, and for the price, I really can't complain. Location is perfect. The room was tiny, but that's to be expected in Manhattan. The bed was really hard, and that's coming from someone who prefers firm beds. Our window looked directly into some sort of office building across the way, but at least it was quiet since we weren't overlooking the street. Free wifi is a huge plus, though it was pretty slow. The fitness center was kind of pitiful-a small, windowless room which contained two ellipticals, a bike, a treadmill, and a set of free weights. It works for getting a bit of cardio in, but that's about it. The continental breakfast was better than average, as it had cheese and cold cuts in addition to the usual cereal and fruit. The restaurant is supposed to be pretty good, but I didn't have a chance to try it.
I'd certainly stay here again at the rate payed, but I wouldn't go out of my way to seek this hotel out. -

Philadelphia, PAI stayed here for work for a few days, only because I cannot get a corporate rate from Hotel Roger Williams this time. Here are my 2 cents:
1. location is great
2. why is the hallway always full of Indian food smell? :(
3. room is so-so. I don't really how to work the manual temperature control. It gets either too hot or too cold.
4. Free wifi and Free breakfast!!!! -

Marina Del Rey, CAThis hotel was great. The room we had was pretty small but we had assumed that would be the case since we selected their lowest price room. The price and location were right on and the people working there were incredibly friendly and helpful.
This hotel is in a kind of commercial area but it is a decent area convenient to everything in Manhattan. There are many restaurants and everything else within the immediate vicinity. We either walked everywhere or we jumped on the subway which is only 1 block away.
We had a few drinks in the restaurant but did not eat there. It was a nice, small place (like the hotel) and I assume the food is good if it matches the service of the hotel.
Next time I head for my Manhattan fix, I'll definitely stay here again. -

Clean, comfortable place to stay in NYC. It's in a convenient location off the 6, just a block from the 28th St subway stop. The building is old and historic - it even has those old signs above the elevators you've only seen in movies to show you where the elevator is currently. Doorman helps with your luggage, chocolate at the front desk, a few comfy couches to sit on in the lobby. Rooms are small, but - hey, it's NYC - neat, clean, and have everything you need - full bath with awesome water pressure, robe, toiletries that actually do moisturize, flat panel tv, heat & a/c, and free wifi on a password-protected network. There's also a gym and pool. Pretty quiet location and thick walls. They will store your luggage for free if you check out early (and I'm sure if you arrive before your room is ready).
Continental breakfast included every morning served from 7 - 11 am in the Black Duck next door. Good stuff, too, I guess what you'd expect from a 3-4 star hotel: cereal, bagels, pastries, hardboiled egges, fruit, yogurt, coffee, orange juice, milk.
It's not the hippest area to stay (I loved staying on the lower east side during my last visit), but you're right in the middle of Curry Hill and next to Koreatown so there's yummy, inexpensive ethnic food galore. I would recommend it. The price was great with a discount from Travelzoo.
Only weird thing - the cleaning staff emptied our trash into the toilet and didn't flush. I didn't think it was great to flush pantiliners, but ok. -

Stayed for two nights in December and enjoyed my stay. This hotel is tucked away on the street so it would be easy to walk/drive by if you weren't looking hard for it.
The lobby is small but nice. The staff was very helpful. My only slight compliant here is that there isn't a concierge. Odd in my opinion.
My friend and I expected two double beds in our room but we only had one queen. No big deal really. The room was definitely the smallest I've ever had in NYC but again - not bad. It had a good layout for the size of the room. The bathroom, however, was perfectly fine and actually spacious based on the room size.
Continental breakfast was key! Really good food and such a nice touch. Literally saved us $8/day.
Subway is one block away, Starbucks is 1 1/2 blocks, and cabs are easily attainable right in front of the hotel.
Would definitely stay here again! -

Glenwood Springs, COHubs and I stayed here for my extended birthday weekend in NYC. The location is a bit off the beaten path for places we spent the majority of our time, but the subway available at the end of the block took us straight to wherever we wanted to go. Can't beat that. Other pros include a nice business center with free printing for guests, and a great breakfast that is included. Hubs and I started each day with some great pastries and bagels in the very charming dining room.
Our room was just okay - absolutely no view (seriously, our window faced another building) but it was very quiet. Also I'm pretty sure we were the youngest couple staying there - the crowd was a bit older. Personally, I think I'd prefere a spot a little closer to the action next time - but we all know that comes with a heftier price tag! We found this place from a Travelzoo deal, and for that, it was great. I just don't know I'd pick it again on my own. Let's be honest, I'll probably just stay wherever I catch the next current Travelzoo deal when I'm in NYC. Or anywhere, for that matter. -

Melrose, MAStayed here for work for a few days. Location was great for me, 5 minutes walk to the office, But there was also subway available at the end of the block, so you could really get anywhere.
My room was nice, clean and really quiet. I'm sure it helped that I was on the top floor. It could also be that the place didn't have many guests since it was the week after New Year's. I did hear people going in and out once in a while, because the doors to the rooms are really heavy, but silence other than that. It made it quite restful to come back to after the end of a long work day.
Room service was tasty, I ordered dinner in my first night. My only complaint was that the dishes I put outside my room after dinner were still there in the morning when I was leaving around 8:00am. I thought that was kind of gross.
Free breakfast served in the adjacent restaurant was prefect for me. Cereal, coffee and baked goods as well as yogurt. No big breakfast items like eggs or pancakes, but I don't eat a big breakfast like that when I'm heading to work anyway. I left there filled up and refreshed each morning, so that was enough for me. I would definitely stay there again given the opportunity. -

Huntington, NYI'm a native New Yorker and I used to live in this neighborhood. So when work called me back to the city, I wanted to stay in my old hood. I've stayed at a few hotels in NYC, including the Barclay and Club Quarters. And I have to stay I was less than impressed with this place at first. It's appearance is run down, the carpet in my particular room is badly stained, worn and popping up in places. The whole place needs an upgrade/renovation. I wouldn't mind if they were charging what Club Quarters does - $159 a night. At a discounted rate at Park South, we're paying $241 a night (not including tax) and I'd expect a bit more. The bed is nice, and the queen room is spacious. It's the badly stained carpet, stained chairs in my room, battered old desk, run down look of the hallways that's disappointing when paying so much. Yes, New York hotels are expensive but in my experience, many of them keep up their appearances so you don't mind paying a lot if you feel you're getting what you're paying for - mainly, a hotel that at least keeps up it's appearances.
UPDATE: After a few days of my stay, a corner room on the 7th floor opened up. My entire experience of this place changed. This room was clean and the carpet was only lightly stained. There was a beautiful view of the Chrysler and while the room was smaller than the back corner one I previously had, it was MUCH brighter. I really enjoyed my stay in this room. It was quieter and peaceful. The room service was friendly, and the burger I ordered was pretty good and affordable.
The location is good if you have to be in this area. It's close to a supermarket, laundry, subway and walking distance to most major places to go around here. The free WIFI is a plus. The doormen are helpful, and the staff was overall attentive. If you're going to stay here, I'd recommend staying in a room toward the front of the building where there is more light and it doesn't feel as dark and run down. I looked at downstairs rooms and they were very dark and overlooked a big boiler thing and brick walls. They were charging the same as the upstairs, so I'm really happy I stayed there.
I'd stay in this hotel again if I needed to stay in this area if I got that same room. Though next time, I'm considering the W hotel. -

Seattle, WAI've stayed here twice before and would stay here again. What I like is that it is very clean, the staff interactions we have had have always been great - got an upgrade last time we were there, and got to check in a bit early, which is always appreciated.
If you like to walk it is very possible (I do this every time) to fly in, take the bus to Grand Central Station and then walk about a mile (flat) to the hotel. Or treat yourself and take a short cab ride - or there is a subway stop right nearby.
Once there, the continental breakfast is above all those chain hotel breakfasts - the Black Duck Restaurant is not open at that time, so the hotel puts on a great spread. Then you can again walk or take the subway anywhere you need to be.
Our room was clean, we felt safe, staff was wonderful. What more could one ask for in NYC? Call them directly the next time you are looking around - they might have a better offer for you than what you can find online. -

Forest Hill, MDTraveled over Easter weekend with my two middle school age children. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Centrally located for all the attractions we went to see. Staff was lovely and very attentive. We will definitely stay at this hotel on our return trip. Very pleased. A bit expensive but worth it or piece of mind.
