Mizu- Midtown East

Mixed reviews as for all hair salons
Stylists come and stylists go, that's the way it is

This place has a LOT of raves though--BUT a lot of them are from a couple of years ago

Again, this is on the experimental list I would say, but since it is no doubt expensive, I wouldn't go there unless you could afford that

Austin M is the BEST COLORIST EVER!!! If you are looking for stellar color that works perfectly with your skin tone, hair type/cut, and personality....Austin is your man!!!

I am a texas girl and love my highlights but not the annoying kind....they are the most fantastic combination of southern belle and new york chic.

I went to Mizu to get a consultation about a hair treatment. My appointment was at 11:00. The hairdresser came to talk to me at 11:50. He answered my questions about the product that they use for keratin treatments not ever mentioning I am sorry for your wait. Really unprofessional.
I ended up not scheduling my treatment there. A blonde Receptionist which was really looking like not enjoying her work probably never let him know I was there.
    No no for me...

I went here last feb and i liked that the staff was very nice and gentle and gave me a cut that got many compliments (Dimitrio) so i came again...

this time, i was not amused.  I came by to get a cut with Aya.  I told her i never liked my hair short and i wanted to keep the length, so just like a trim about 2 inches.  Ended up being like 4-5 inches!! She kept tousling my hair on top to create volume (which felt like jabbing my head every so often) but thats not my everyday- i said my daily routine is just wash and blowdrying straight!  I feel like she didnt seem to energetic or happy, even her assistant was a bit off, as she washed my hair after the dry cut, she was pretty rough too like she wanted to quickly get it over with.

Two stars because i dont want to give up on this place.  Next time i will ask for Dimitrios again. But i have to wait for my hair to grow out again T_T. Always a big no no when they cant keep the length you requested..

It was not worth dishing out 200 bucks.

I have to dedicate this review to the apprentice who did my hair.

Grabbed my hair, took a pair of scissors and CHOP. 6 inches gone. I went in asking for a short hairstyle - short but not too short, just enough to tie it back into a ponytail. Came out with a long layered bobish sort of look - somewhat of a long bob. The apprentice was extremely attentive. I can definitely tell that the salon goes above and beyond it's duty of not just doing what the customer wants, but what suits the customer. At one point during the cut, the apprentice was "shaping" my hair so that it fits my bone structure and profile. I told them that I'm very low maintenance and prefer not to style my hair everyday. I walked out of the salon with my hair light, free and unstyled - exactly the way I wanted and more.

Austin. Austin. Austin. I began going to Austin as his hair model when he was an assistant, he has now graduated from the program and on the floor running.  His work has always been consistant and he always listens to exactly what I say.  I am a blonde, who hates golden/red/brass tones,  the only person that has ever given me the perfect neutral blonde color, is Austin. On one occasion, I trusted a friend of a friend with my hair and I was left with all sorts of green and red tones - it was horrendous. When I was hysterical with no hope, he worked his magic and saved my hair!

Ladies, if you are looking for a consistant, amazing colorist  - you found him!

    Love that Austin!

Woah.  I went to Harley at Shampoo on Saturday afternoon to get a cut.  I was this close ::squeezes index finger and thumb together:: to shaving my entire head.

Harley informed me that the back of my hair was longer than the front.  Angela at Mizu had given me a .....mullet.  A MULLET.  And I had been walking around like that for a month and a half!  Seriously.  What kind of friends are you that you don't tell me I'm having a bad hair month?

I am a Hair Stylist from L.A. I am both Italian, Sasson trained by 2 different masters who both have very high regards of NYC Hair People.  Therefore, I expect to learn a lot from some of high end NYC salons. My close friend decided to try out this place and I took the opportunity to observe. God, I was really not impressed at all!!!!!!

One of the owner was doing a razor/scissors cut on medium length hair and another stylist did a Sasson technique style haircut.  The Sasson style haircut was only okay at best because there was no design and the skill was very outdated, blow dry was terrible.

The owner's haircut ended up a outdated lousy mall housewife hairstyle and one side was so obviously heavier. His layering was beauty school level which means only 2 dimensional lines and super basic sectioning.  He has this look like he is painting a master piece artwork but his razor shredding is making me so sad.

I ended up have to fixed my poor friend's haircut all over.  I think it was one of the so-call director who did her hair.  Thank goodness my friend is well off with money and I feel so bad.

Where are the real masters with real skills?  Where should I look next?

Well I wanted to like this place and give it a better review but maybe it was an off day with my stylist, who knows. One good thing is if you have never been there before you do a quick survey and get $25 off your visit. So I said why not, I will splurge on a wash, cut and blow dry with someone who is an "artist"...they book me with Dominick and I am excited.

I walk in and am greeted by a super friendly receptionist who points me upstairs to coat check with another super friendly attendant who gives me a robe to put on...and then I plop down on the couch to wait. Granted, I did get there a little early but called them and they said to come in early.

So I am waiting, waiting, waiting...turned down a few offers of water...waiting, waiting, waiting. Amused at old jewish hair cutter taking forever to blow dry his client because he has alot of funny stories. Another stylist who is a spanish girl with curly blonde hair asks who I am waiting for, so I tell her and she said well he will be right out...waiting, waiting, waiting. She finally takes pity on me and washes my hair for me since I have been waiting at that point for half an hour.

I sit down in the stylists chair and I am finally graced by Dominick's presence and what do I hear...that he was busy looking up things for his New Year's Eve party (I went December 30th) and "lost track of time". He was not very apologetic about it and I was quite frankly not in the best of moods after that, he asked me what I wanted...I said I wanted something that kept my length but maybe a few more layers but I told him to just use his imagination because I was not picky.

He made a few more comments about my hair...like did you notice the back is a little shorter than the front, no it's the back of my hair I didn't notice that and I have no idea why my previous stylist did it. I mentioned that I did a Brazilian blow out as well and he gave me a look like if I was a moron and said why would you do it with your hair type and so many of my clients have complained about it and why again would you do it....well I just wanted to try it out, sorry for making a hair faux pas.

After that I just tuned out and read my Kindle, I got two products sold to me. And he mentioned for me to leave my robe on the chair he would get it and then just walked away from me, there have been very few times I did not want to tip someone for a service and this was one of it...but it was the holidays, I wasn't going to be a scumbag. I got a de-tangler and a dry shampoo, plus my wash, style and blow dry was $250 with the $25 coupon.

After that, I saw my sister and said don't you like my hair she said oh you got it done...it looks exactly like it did before, maybe bouncier? My bf pretty much said the same, I should have stuck to my hair dresser in Brooklyn who charges a fraction of the price makes my hair look much better.

I received a formal letter of apology from the apprentice via email. Is it possible that I received it because of the negative review? Maybe. Either way, the letter seemed sincere and people should be given credit for admitting they were wrong.

I hold no hard feelings against Mizu and I think what happened may have been an isolated incident. I may go back, but I'll definitely be setting an appointment with professional staff.

Woah, enter the nicest salon I have ever been to.   Okay the bumble in meatpacking gives this place a run for it's money but Mizu salon is N-I-C-E!

I think they use more natural products so my shampoo and condition left my hair shiny and bouncy.  I got a great cut and my stylist gave me one of the best blowouts EVER.

She really worked with me to give me what I wanted.  Felt like a glamed out version of me. LOVE IT!

I feel a tiny bit bad cheating on my bumble stylist boyfriend but, after so many years I may have to alternate btwn the two more often.

I am singing the praises of Aya. The woman is a miracle worker.

What led me to her? I walked into an aunt's office at work days prior and was greeted with the following sentence, verbatim: "You're hair looks terrible. When's the last time you had a haircut?" (Thanks, dear aunt. I love you too. By the way, "Good afternoon.) Less than 10 minutes later, she was on the phone scheduling an appointment for me with Aya, her treat, the next morning. This particular aunt of mine has been letting Aya cut her hair for more than seven years now, so I felt at ease immediately. I knew I was about to reap the benefits of her insult. (Ha!)

Mizu is a bright, clean, and bustling salon quietly nestled on Park Avenue, with a welcoming and professional staff. Everything is very streamlined with little confusion. Water and tea are offered, including about a dozen different varieties of Harney organic tea. (Nice.) The music was good; typical "salon" music, with some Stevie Wonder and Gaelle in the mix. My 11:45 a.m. appointment started a few minutes late, but I could see Aya feverishly finishing up her previous client. It was no matter to me.

Hair washed, I sat in my chair with Aya. "Let's talk", she said. I did. Two inches off all around to clean my hair up, layers cut back in as they had grown out, angle the front, and clean up my bangs. I part my hair to the right and sweep my bangs to the left. Would you like to know how my hair turned out. She took off two inches all around to clean my hair up. She cut my layers back in as they had grown out. She cleaned up my bangs. She parted my hair to the right. She cut my bangs so I could easily sweep them to the left. Yes. Some stylists listen when you talk to them. It's true!

Not only did Aya cut my hair the way I wanted it, but she was nit-picky, which I use the most complimentary way. She was not about to let any stray hair ruin what she had just crafted. She snipped and clipped until her masterpiece was completed.

She did "scold" me, because I was honest and told her that the last time I had my bangs trimmed, I did it myself because I didn't have time to go to a salon to get them cleaned up. *blush* I took the scolding with good humor. She's absolutely right! Normally I don't do that...which is why my bangs look amazing for the first time in about three months!

My head literally felt lighter when I stepped outside. She put NO product in my hair, yet my hair was straight and glossy in the end.

    WOW.

If you want to treat yourself to a great cut and have a few extra dollars to spend, I'd absolutely suggest coming here. Great staff. Great environment. Ask for Aya. You'll come out looking like a glowing vision.

Like most, I don't do reviews unless it is really that good or really that bad.

Really amazing people who work there. Yes sometimes (not often) it gets busy or slightly backed up but it's a salon people.... Unless you want them to screw your hair up sometimes ya have to wait 5-15 minutes!

Originally I followed Kerry Resnick from Joseph Martin Salon (now closed) to Mizu...

Love the atmosphere, vibe, and products. I really like that they carry a variety of hair products rather than just the basic names. I know a few celebs go there so obviously it's pretty good

HANDS DOWN KERRY RESNICK!!! Amazing man & great with the hair...

I am the pickiest person when it comes to anything... Believe me try him once & you will be hooked!!!

DORIE GREENSPAN award-winning cookbook author, and blogger celeb baker, has opened a pop-up cookie stand inside the most unlikely of places: a hair salon on the ues of manhattan!

this is her first retail venture, and with her son, they were selling cookies all afternoon to a long line of us devoted fans of her great cookie recipes.

i was surprised to see just her and her son, standing at a table with silver trays of cookies...i have to say they certainly live up to expectations, and mine were very high...so far ive had the chocolate clunkers, world peace, and espresso cookies, all of which are now my top three favorite cookies of all time...i am not exaggerating, these things are wonderful!

i look forward to the permanent fixture when they finally open the stand alone cookie bar.

Aya is the sweetest!  I went to mizu on New Year's Eve and Aya gave my lifeless haven't-been-cut-in-a-year-hair ooh lala oomph and volume that I'd never thought I see on my overgrown flat hair.

When she gave me a $50 off card and told me to come back for a much needed haircut I happily made my appointment and left mizu feeling fabulous.

I rescheduled my appointment 2x and pushed it back 45 minutes that day of and the girls at mizu were super sweet and never gave me a hint of attitude.  Definitely no pretentiousness here!

Aya meticulously cut layers into my long mono length hair and kept the bottom layer long exactly as I had asked.  The result was lively bouncy hair that was soft to the touch and soo sexy, my boyfriend said it was gorgeous.

Needless to say, I'll be coming back to visit Aya, especially now that my new job is right down the block!

Summary: Get a thorough explanation of your stylist's cutting style and theories BEFORE the cutting starts, and avoid wonky instructors.

I had an appointment with an apprentice. We discussed a bob that would be given movement with some layering. After our discussion, however, the dirty-fingernails, seemingly impaired or hungover, unkempt instructor took over and turned my intended cut into an asymmetric high-fashion look. I have nothing against cutting-edge styles, but that is not what the apprentice and I discussed. The entire approach to the cut was very random -- cut a little here, then flip my hair around, cut a little over there... I felt like a wig on a stylist's mannequin. And, since my cut is uneven, I now have the opportunity to practice trimming my own hair.

Every salon should demonstrate respect for clients by mandating staff cleanliness and crystal clear communication -- in that regard,my experience at Mizu was a flop. *Note: other staff seemed groomed, and acted professionally, but one rotten apple...

I was a hair model, so I came in around 10 am.  I approached the front desk and the associate tells me to go upstairs.  I felt kind of out of place.  All in all, I liked my haircut.  Simple, short, and light.  I had an apprentice work on my hair.  He took 2.5 hours, and his instructor helped intermittently.  I walked out with what looks like a one-length bob. The one thing that I would suggest is to work on removing the weight on my head.  Despite the stylish look, he would lean on my head as he cut my hair, which was uncomfortable at times for my neck(minus one star).  However, I should mention that he was responsive and did try his best to help make me feel welcome.  Overall, he was warm and receptive to my requests.

Ask for MAMORU and you won't be sorry. He's been cutting my hair on and off since 1999 (I moved away for a few years and he's one of the reasons I'm happy to be back in New York). A hair magician, Mamoru uses a razor (but will use scissors, if you ask), which is great for my thick (but very fine) naturally wavy hair. A haircut costs $150 (plus tax and tip...nuts, i know--but Mizu offers gift cards). His haircuts last and last (and last). My hair mysteriously morphs into new styles as the months pass. I can usually go about five-six months between visits (I color my hair and so the ends get a bit frayed after awhile, so you could go longer if you don't color).

Be clear and tell him what you want, but be open to his suggestions. He may not verbally articulate his intentions but relax, this guy just KNOWS. He's been doing hair in NYC for a long time (previously at Bumble), and I think he's quite a big shot at Mizu. He's like a Japanese Edward Scissorhands (don't panic when you see the chunks of flying hair, it all works out in the end).

Worth the cash for sure. Good with long, naturally wavy hair. Also don't panic if you don't like it right away, sometimes it takes a week (or two) for your hair to get acclimated.

Over Christmas in Maryland, a family member was raving about a healthier keratin straightening option that she had done.  I have very frizzy hair, and I've always been too scared to try a straightening treatment and the negative/scary reviews always turned me off.  She and her mother are nurses, so I trust their judgement.

The product is called Anevolve, so I looked up salons in NYC that had it, and Mizu came up.  I called and made an appointment with Henri.  Walked in for my appointment a few minutes early and was immediately taken upstairs to change and waited on the coach.  Everyone was very friendly; like other posters, I've had my share of NYC salons, and sometimes the atmosphere is that they're doing you the favor by providing the service to you, not for you being there - definitely not the case at Mizu.

Then I met with Henri, and he assessed my hair to determine which level of treatment I should get.  He is the most patient and thorough stylist that I have ever met; you can tell he wants his clients to look good (not just get them out the door as quickly as possible).  He did an amazing job, and I couldn't be more happier with the results.  He even cleaned up my cut to look better with my new straighter hair.  He gave me all the information I need to make sure the treatment lasts as long as possible - it is pricey, so I listened very carefully!

Coincidentally, he was also once the Director of Education for Anevolve, so there was no one better that could do my treatment!  I'm so glad that I liked this salon because my previous stylist moved out of the country, and I wasn't too crazy about alternative I was given at my current salon.  I'll be back to see Henri and the team at Mizu from now on.

As someone who's been a patron of quite a smattering of salons in NYC, I am glad that I have landed, quite happily, with Mizu.

Overall, it's a clean, well-managed place. You're nicely greeted, both upon arrival at the door and upstairs when you begin your service. The desk folk do their best to accommodate you when booking and checking out. There's a lovely coat check/gown lady upstairs, and assistants who take pains to protect your clothes, skin, make sure you never go thirsty, and provide for your every comfort. I love the salon upstairs, where natural light comes in from the western windows while I sit in a comfy chair, being well tended to.

My praise for Mizu would not be complete without saluting Nico Scibelli, a master colorist if I ever met one! What's key for anyone with the courage to sit in the chair, and start anew with a stylist or colorist is in letting that professional get to know you. Nico took pains to understand what my life was like, what I do with my hair between appointments, what didn't work prior, and what I expected. Since we met, I have never had to direct him vis a vis my color--he knows instinctively where to go, by seeing where we went in recent months--when it's June, he asks if we should consider highlights, and in autumn, we talk about going with deeper tones.

What will reassure you about Nico is the fact that he's clearly a colorist with profound experience, which reflects positively on his assistants, most of whom go on to serve clients of their own for the good training. That's nice to see. Moreover, he's not a flake that forgets you in the chair, or someone who feels the need to talk about their drunken clubbing escapades. He has taught me quite a few things about color, and color care.

That last point is key for me, an avowed redhead whose winter tresses would lose a lot of lustre if it wasn't for Nico. Unlike so many other colorists, he keeps in me in a range that is perfect for my coloring and the most complimentary to who I am as a person. Others have tried to push more garish shades on me, based on momentary trend, or something they learned in a class somewhere. In Nico's chair, one can sit back, relax, and feel confident that he'll bring out the best in you, always following up to make sure you were well-treated once you leave his capable hands. If he left NYC for any reason, I'd pay dearly to stay in his care!

My favorite stylist, post-Nico, is Gregory, a delightful man who'll send you off marvelously styled, and feeling like a million! I walk out, soaking up the admiring glances.

Everyone at Mizu is so friendly and helpful. From the smiling receptionists who greeted me, to the colorist, stylist and both assistants, I always felt welcomed and even pampered.

Miguel did an awesome job on my color. The cut, by Angela - honestly - was the only cut I've ever had in my life that I knew I'd like before it was even blow-dried. She stopped several times during the cut to ask my opinion about things she wanted to try and explain to me how short she would have to cut certain parts to get the look I wanted. I never felt bullied into a style and I love the finished product. If you're looking for a more edgy look, you know it's hard to find a stylist who really gets what you're after; Angela does.

*One of the assistants even rushed across the room with a q-tip to wipe off some dye she noticed on my ear.

I will definitely be coming back!

Just had my hair colored and cut at Mizu.  Suzette colored my hair to the perfect color for me!  She talked about my skin tone and did a color that brought out my "big brown eyes".  I don't think I'll ever have anyone else do my color again!
Lisa also did my cut which was to perfection also. She tamed down my "willie wonka" sides and gave a great shape to my curly hair.
    Yay Mizu!!

Suzette... She is the 1st in 3 years in nyc that has been able to get me back my Giselle like color. I could nt say more great things about how she really made me look the way I wanted to look.... period. She listened. I thought I liked another girl, but I will never stray from Suzette now. She actually got it right. I get compliments all of the time. It looks natural and still very beachy cool. I never thought it would be so hard to get someone. but it was but now I v found suzette. And to top it off, she s the least expensive of everyone I ve tried in the past. Crazy.

After seeing another colorist yesterday and having one of the worst experiences to date, I felt compelled to give a shout out to my normal salon.

Miguel is a colorist G-d. Go see him. Angela gives amazing cuts and Xavier does such an amazing job at blow-outs. Seriously. Kim Kardashian would be jealous. The staff is great, the spot is trendy and you feel fabulous when you walk out.

Suzette is amazing! I have been wanting to write this review for sometime now, but time always slipped away.

Again, I say it...Suzette is amazing. She has a great eye for color and most importantly, she is a great listener.

When I came to her last September in dire straights with my over-processed, bleached out, uneven and unhealthy blonde hair, I was overwhelmed. She listened to me, was brutally honest, and assured me we could get my hair back in tip-top shape and to its natural color with the right mixture of glosses, maintenace trims, and PATIENCE. She was (as I was) most concerned with what would be best for my hair in the long-term and promised to be patient with me to get it where I want it (which is long, healthy, and natural). This is no easy feat, but Suzette has made the transition flawless.

I have been going back every couple months for a "hair checkup" and to get more shine added to what is left of my dyed hair.

I have been going to Karen at Mizu 505 for about two and a half years now, and I could not recommend her more! When I first started going to her, my hair was double-processed platinum blonde. She quickly took it down to a more natural and manageable look for me. Now, I only have to have to go in every three or four months, and when I tell people I get my hair colored, they usually respond with 'I thought your hair was natural.' On top of that, Karen is one of the sweetest and most genuine people I've ever met. Unless she or I move away from the city, I am confident I will never go to anyone other than her.
