Maggies Place- Midtown

Got this photo from the internet...thought it was better than what I had on file ( below)

Took this photo with scaffolding some time back..

Well, Maggie's has been around for some time and still gets mixed reviews...this is kind of place people can love or hate. One person right near front of reviews really goes to town on why he does not like it! A few others are pretty peeved too.

Lot of  good reviews though

Read for yourself again is my advice

We went here for lunch and were immediately greeted and seated.  My husband and I decided to split an order of the spinach artichoke dip and each have a Caesar salad.  Whoa!  That dip was cheesy, creamy good!  Salad fresh as well.  Mid meal, my husband spills his beer all over me.  Pretty lady servers came out of the woodwork, offering him towels and sympathy, thinking that he was wearing his beverage.  But, once I showed them that it was I indeed who was drenched, they changed their focus rather quickly.  Service and food:  A+.

This has been sitting in my heart since I left the restaurant and I must get it out. If you don't want to read this experience entirely do note that I had a bartender/ waitress named Vivian I trust (lunch shift 2pmish on a Wednesday) who seemed very anxious to leave.

*wrong food order (didn't pay attention)
*took no responsibility for it and instead shifted the blame to me (even though I know I spoke the truth the customer is still always right)
*received a burger with a curly hair on top of my bun wrapped around the toothpick and pickle (looked deliberate)
*management had to be figured out by me and apologized after hearing my experience and offered a free meal next time I was to come
*i had 2 drinks, to me they should have been comped. (I take responsibility for not making that request)

Now back to Vivian (i trust thats her name) I'll give her that as to why she gave me a regular burger instead of a turkey burger. ***Her anxiety to leave*** The burger was rare and as I attempted to get her attention she sent someone else my way, a gentleman who seemed to care less that I was there to pay for a service. I showed him my bleeding turkey burger and he said, "it's not a turkey burger". Vivian then comes by and speaks to me in a harsh manner stating that I never ordered a turkey burger. She knew she was lying and I knew she was lying. It almost turned into a back and forth but I felt her frustration and anxiety and knew the root cause wasn't me so I let it go. Vivian runs out of the restaurant to meet someone or what not (overheard her phone convo). I put in a specific order for another turkey burger with the male bartender/waiter. He tried to rush me and i told him that i had to tell him why i was there before I ordered. "They say you have the best turkey burgers and I really want to experience it". I get the burger and received a curly blonde/ brown hair right on top of the pickle which was stuck in the center of the bun with a toothpick. I don't think the kitchen wanted me to miss it. I laughed because of the amount of effort I put into finding the so called "best turkey burger in NYC". I just stared at the fries which I already took a bite of prior to seeing the hair. I went over them carefully w/ my eyes- who knows what they went through. Prayed on it. I asked him to take the burger away and leave me the fries since I was so hungry and was now pressed for time. He apologized and said he'd comp it (which would be inevitable even if it wasn't an offer).  I was disgusted, disappointed and as a paying customer felt disrespected. That is not customer service; from Vivian to the possible pubic hair.

Nobody suggested I speak to the manager however I guessed that the lady that just did a hostessing interview was a manager. I trust that her name is Juliana. she was ready to listen and said that they were big on customer service. I told her that Joannas replies motivated me to choose and recommend Maggie's Place. I spoke to her and told her the whole story which started at my search for the best turkey burger in NYC. Told her about the possible miscommunication w/ Vivian even though Vivian lied or perhaps.... Perhaps she forgot. She looked stressed. Then told her about blood burger #1 and possible deliberate hair burger #2. She apologized and offered me a free meal whenever I wanted to return. I was ok and accepted the offer and even said I'd return w/ friends.

In retrospect no, I wasn't ok and the 2 margaritas I had to drown my sadness of no turkey burger and disappointment in Maggies Place should have been comped also however I didn't open my mouth about that so I will take the responsibility on that one. Lesson learned. Juliana (manager) I apologize for going back on my word of not writing a review. I want people to know what happened so that you all have a stronger and higher standard for your food and your FOH and BOH staff. The fries were good, the drinks were good and maybe Vivian got a phone call that pissed her off. I got there and was greeted within 1 minute of sitting at the bar with a happy face. I step out and return to anxious, frustrated and irresponsibility in putting what she knew was the incorrect meal in. I gave her the same shpeel about the turkey burger that I gave the male bartender /waiter and you. That staff of yesterday 11/5/13 within 2pm and 4pm; ALL OF THE STAFF needs a SERIOUS TEAM sit down. I will be forwarding a separate letter to the owner. It's not the whole restaurant because like I said, the food is good. A loose bolt in an awesome machine will be its downfall. I also want to take you guys up on the free meal offer however I don't trust your kitchen. At least not that BOH staff and not the servers that were not visible.

I'm in the fitness and entertainment business and have a large network.Customer service feeds me. Please educate your staff on excellent customer service. When I give my $$$ to anyone for a service I want what I give to my clients. Awesomeness!

Typical Irish pub. Large beer selection.
We ate upstairs on a rather slow day, and the service was only okay. She had a good memory of what we ordered, but took forever to see that we needed our final check! Especially when there were only 4 tables and 2 waitresses. I mean come on!

Stumbled upon Maggie's with a friend while looking for somewhere to eat. Great Irish restaurant. Good selection of drinks. We were seated immediately and the waitress was nice and checked on us often. The Maggie's Burger was superb and reasonably priced. Great relaxed environment, definitely going again

Have consistently enjoyed this midtown bar and Irish restaurant, both lunch and dinner, and, on occasion, with larger groups.

I always check out the specials, generally reasonably priced.

Ale-battered fresh (cod) Fish & Chips, $17, is consistently good, as are the salads.

Wide assortment of quality beers on tap, including Sierra Nevada Pale Ale , Goose Island, and Guinness.

Tip:  Back room, first floor, is quietest area.

Walked in randomly after work late on a Thursday night. Service was okay - a few minutes into our food arriving the server asked us to clear the bill so she could go home (what if we needed anything else?).

The food was okay, the beer selection was average. Their nacho chips were quite fresh and yummy. But not much else on their menu was vegetarian friendly.

Yesterday, I hosted a farewell lunch at Maggie's for a former colleague.  We were a group of six and 5/6 of us ordered the Turkey Burger with Black Beans and Scallions.  Grilling turkey burgers is one of my specialties, and I was a leery about ordering a turkey burger at an Irish Pub.  Plus turkey burgers can be dry and bland if not prepared properly.  But I decided to go for it.  O-M-G!!!  Maggie's Turkey Burger was the BEST turkey burger I've ever had!  It was the perfect size - not humungous but not skimpy either, and so FLAVORFUL!  The patty was seasoned perfectly with just a small amount of black beans and topped with fresh tomato salsa.  I had mine with a slice of pepper jack cheese - MMM MMM GOOD!!!  Yes, it blows my turkey burger recipe out of the water... no competition!  I highly recommend it with the baby greens salad.

Maggie's Place is very conveniently located in Mid-town Manhattan.  The venue is very spacious and welcoming, and the service was pretty good. We were there for over two hours, and I think we were the last customers to leave. The staff didn't blink twice, and we were able to relax and continue to enjoy ourselves long after lunch was over.

There are other items on the menu that look appealing, but I don't know if I can go back to Maggie's and not order the Turkey Burger!  Yes, it was that GOOD!  So I will definitely be back soon. ;-)

Typical Irish pub, but with flare. Sat at the bar for a quick bite during their busy lunch hour (almost every table was filled.) I am business woman myself, and I thought it was humorous to see all the Suits chowing down at this type of establishment. But the food was way above your average pub food, so I suppose that is why many choose to dine here for lunch. The food was better than I expected, but nothing to necessarily return for. Our plates did come out quickly though, and the fries were piping hot :)

I never think twice about Corned Beef and Cabbage any other day of the year. Why would I? But for some reason, on St. Patty's day, I was on a mission to find and devour some. Connolly's across the street was slam packed full of cockeyed booze hounds falling over drunk at 6pm on a Tuesday! No thanks.

Maggie's was a tad less rowdy and had a separate area upstairs to satisfy your Irish day cravings. Corned beef, fish and chips, Sheppards pie, Irish lamb stew, THE Works. A little pricey in my opinion. $15.95 for the beef, $13.95 for fish and chips, but it had to be done.

Even at the height of the holiday/tourist season, this place was nearly empty.  But we kinda liked that.

Food was good, not great.  Service was very attentive.  Prices were reasonable.

Good beer selection (though now I wish I'd gotten a Guinness).

If you're in the neighborhood, this place is a nice, quiet place to get a pint.

Only reason why I go to Maggie's Place is because it's the closest place to go to for drinks after work.  Seriously if I weren't such a sad lazy ass, I wouldn't come here.

I've been here for both lunch and happy hour.  I think you fair better of with happy hour but not that much better.  Chicken pot pie was void of any taste and very liquid inside.

Service is quite average here.  I had a friend who ordered a Scotch off Maggie's drink menu only for the waitress to come back 5 minutes later and ask "what kind of beer did you ask for?", and followed by another 5 minutes to say they're out  of the Scotch she ordered.

The only time i'd ever come back is if everyone else is doing it.

Clean, efficient midtown pub.  Good burger, reasonably priced (for nyc, of course, not for anywhere else in America!).  They had a good $20 t-bone special that might be worth trying if I was going to eat dinner here.

Don't think I'd ever come outside of weekday lunch/happy hour, but would come back for either of those times.

Good burgers, flat beer and nice atmosphere.

I don't find anything particularly endearing to this place, especially when there are so many other options available. One visit is fine, after that it feels like an opportunity lost for not going somewhere different/better.

Give it a try and decide for yourself.

I found this place on http://nycbeer.org.  Garrett Oliver (brewmaster @ Brooklyn Brewery) claims they have the best pint of Guinness in ths city.

So, the Guinness was really good, I will agree.  The place was also completely dead.  Seems like an after work sort of scene, but at 1030pm on a Tuesday night, there was not much to write home about.

We ended up here for St. Patty's Day since Connolly's had a line and ended up sticking around the whole night.
Taps are clean as I was drinking draft beer all night and I actually feel OK today!

I can't say that I've ever been unhappy at an irish pub.. until Maggie came along. The atmosphere, the service, the Guinness - usually these are enough to make any night at an irish pub a success. I brought my girlfriend to Maggie's because it looked like a comfortable irish pub/restaurant and that's what we were feeling at the moment. I figured we'd get a quick dinner and head out for an awesome New York night out. Weirdly though, between the slow service and the truly disappointing food - we left in a really confused, weird, angry mood. Maggie I will never visit your place again.

    Great pub in midtown Manhattan.

Burgers are great, service is good.  Prices are typical for this part of NYC.  My only semi-complaint would be that the soda's are $2.50 a piece and they are small.  No refills.

Maggies is an Irish pub so don't get all high falootin' about it's "cuisine ".
I can  attest to the feastive atmosphere and fine chow like fried oysters and great, tasty ribs.

    Great place to hang out.

I was in NYC recently for an interview and went here with an old grad school buddy. We didn't exactly go here on purpse, it just happened to be the closest bar to the intersection we met up at, but it wasn't bad. A little pricy, but it is Manhattan so whatever. Bartender was a cool enough guy. I probably wouldn't ever go back on purpose, but I wouldn't object if it was suggested as a meeting up place, either.

I walked in for the $10 beer & burger special and was told after I ordered that it's only a 1/2 pint of beer. I hate misleading signs. don't know why I stayed. I ordered sliders and it came with just the meat and bun and a dot of some kind of sauce. Come on, couldn't spare a lettuce leaf? The service was very good though, and if you want a quiet place for a drink this works fine.

not one of my preferred irish pubs... more of an after work hours drinking establishment... typical finance guys, beers, burgers... nothing fancy

calamari - buffalo or regular fried, a lil on the rubbery side
burger - cooked medium rare-medium... nothing to rave bout here.

We used to host every corporate event here and then it stopped. I work down the block so it's a shame we can't settle on a decent place in the area. Service is slow and the overweight waitresses in kilts aren't worth your time. I also once caught the waitress pouring me a lower end scotch than what I had ordered. She also did a poor job of trying to cover it up. Avoid this place like the plague. I'm not a fan of the place across the street either, but it's a better option.

Not really much to say other than I really did not like this place. The bread was a mix of chewy/hard. The steak salad was overpriced and lacked flavor. Oh and the waitress was not so nice; she really didn't care that we were in a rush. I don't think I would ever come back here again.

OMG that was a good cheeseburger!  Fun and Christmassy too, if a bit crowded with the after work happy hour scene.  Maybe also a tad overpriced but not as bad as TGIFridays up the street!
