The Chocolate Bar and I are long lost lovers, um I mean friends. We go WAY back, even before they moved to this location 4+ years ago.  Their former location was a couple blocks away and I was a regular.  I always took friends and visitors to the Chocolate Bar for their A-MAZING hot chocolate. I had also bought some chocolate as gifts to friends who were visiting.  Not only until recently did I stop by this location. Again, I ask myself why did it take me this long to come back. All the other new spots are such a distraction, but they don't have the same goodness and essence as Chocolate Bar. If you want superb hot chocolate, no question - go to Chocolate Bar.

In addition to the chocolate bars, they offer an expansive selection in their cafe. Not only do they serve hot chocolate, but also iced mocha lattes, mint mochas, ice cream, and more. I can't even say what my "favorites" are because everything is just so damn good.

    AWESOME chocolate. Poor follow-up skills.

I give this place three stars. The chocolate is wonderful. The people are super friendly. But I was so frustrated by my experience -- which, admittedly, is unique to most -- that I can't go higher right now.

I visited while on a chocolate tour with Hilary (http://hilarybg.yelp.com). The chocolate there was outstanding. While we were there I glimpsed a box set of four chocolate lollipops shaped like mustaches. My little sister is living in CA so I wanted to ship them to her. I would have bought them and shipped them myself but I wanted to make sure they didn't melt along the way, so I asked the girls behind the counter if they could ship something as a gift without it melting. They said they do it all the time.

So I gave them her name/address, my email address, paid, and they told me they would email me a tracking number. Ten days later I had started a new job and clean forgotten about the tracking email, which I'd never received. My sister called and I found put she had no package from me.

After calling the shop and being referred to email Alison, I did so and asked for the tracking number. I let her know what I'd ordered and on what date. She remembered me and said she'd email me the tracking number the next day.

The next night, after not hearing from her, I emailed again. The following day she wrote me a cryptic email about it never having gotten sent. She graciously sent it overnight, on them, but the package didn't get to my sister until over three weeks after I ordered it. That's just silly.

If you're stopping in for the typical reasons, have at it! I'm sure you won't be disappointed. But if you need the staff to go above and beyond, think twice and/or just do it yourself.

Hot chocolate and I are cuddle buddies - we comfort each other on bad/cold/meaningless days. So when I saw this place had hot chocolate (and flavored hot chocolate!!) on a pretty muggy/kind of cold rainy day, I knew I had to have some.

I thought that The City Bakery had the best hot chocolate I had ever tasted - and I was WRONG. I loved The Chocolate Bar's hot chocolate - it's like a flavored melted chocolate bar - and it's not so sweet that I'll get sick (like I sometimes do with City Bakery).

Although this place is a bit pricey, it's one of my favorite chocolate places in the city because they do chocolate (and HOT CHOCOLATE) so well. The staff is also extremely nice and helpful - they recommended which flavored hot chocolate to try (and what type of day you should have it on). IMHO, you can't call yourself a chocoholic living in NYC and not go here.

We had the pleasure of having lunch here. We had the crab cakes and the applewood paninni and I have to say both were excellent, service is excellent and a great little patio for people watching. We had reservations for dinner the next night at another restaurant and we decided to have dessert at the chocolate bar, we were not..

This place does so much right and is a model for how a niche small business storefront should operate.  Now I know there is no pleasing every special nut that imports themselves into the city demanding gluten-free and peanut-free fair trade organic cacao chocolate bar that costs below $26.....but what they do here, they do simply and right.

So you're probably coming here for the chocolate.  Well quire frankly, best chocolate bar I've ever had made in this country.  And I only think I've had better from Switzerland because they use grass-fed dairy fed at high altitudes (higher fats in the grass make better milk, look it up).  Chocolate Bar has "flavorful" chocolate though.  Not added flavors, just a complexity.  How would I describe it exactly?  How would describe a blossoming rose to a blind person?  Well, it kinda tastes like that with no thorns.

Also I haven't seen it in awhile, but the chocolate bar with (I'm guessing) the banana pudding filling, best one ever.

As an aside, the person that ran the cashier looked to be a 11 year old girl that I can only assume was the child of the owner standing 10 feet away.  She was super polite, efficient with the order, and packed my boxes of chocolate so neatly.  Besides this being so charming and quaint, I left the store mentally cursing so many other Manhattan establishments staffed by jaded liberal arts grads where I can't even get a fraction of the basic customer service that a child can provide.....

    A trendy hip chocolate bar!
They have a few small tables inside & I thought, how smart. Instead of going out for coffee, come in and get some chocolate! They make drinks, and I think they have ice cream too. I definitely recommend trying the salted dark chocolate. THey also have a variety of cool gifts. Again, it is a bit pricey, but definitely worth the splurge.

I went in for the ice cream and rustic, sweet, homey decor and was not disappointed! Coffee is average price for size and quality, but their chocolate truffles are RIDICULOUSLY expensive. Just as expensive as the other chocolate shops in west village though T_T

Chocolate Bar is a both a store and a small cafe serving tea and coffee. They sell packages of hot chocolate mix, chocolate bars, and a small selection of truffles. I'll be back when it's colder to sample their hot chocolate but while I was there, I purchased a box of truffles and a bar of chocolate. Individual truffles are $1.50 and $6 for a box of 4. If you ask, they will add a ribbon so the box looks a little more presentable if you want to give it to someone as a gift. The yuzu truffle was a bit tart with a slight bitterness and saltiness. I became accustomed to the flavor as I consumed the truffle but it wasn't something I feel the need to have again. The yellow passionfruit truffle was the best of the bunch I picked. The filling inside is very smooth, with a lovely vanilla flavor and a subtle but present taste of passionfruit. The other two truffles I chose were unremarkable but good. I purchased a sea salt chocolate bar which was a bit too salty for my taste. It contains large crystals of sea salt which aren't evenly dispersed so one bite will be full of salt and another will only contain a few grains. I'm not sure if the salt really added anything to the chocolate but it was a pretty good, standard chocolate bar without any extra fruity or nutty notes.

I like good hot chocolate and I would definitely recommend this place.  The liquid hazelnut hot chocolate was delicious!! It's the perfect amount of sweetness and chocolate.

Went in with the chocolate tour on a cold rainy day. Found out that the coffee here is awesome (espresso and cappuccino). Tried the chipotle and cinnamon chocolate bar -very nice.

Super friendly service - the store associates made me feel right at home in their little chocolate oasis. They recommended that I try their iced mint mocha, which was a perfect mix of minty and chocolatey flavors (unlike other drinks that I've tried at other places, which often go way to heavy on the chocolate, or just taste like pure sugar). It was the perfect choice for a humid summer day. I hope to visit them again whenever I'm back on the east coast!

In terms of the hot chocolate, this place is frickin' awesome! Seriously - some of the best hot chocolate I have ever tasted. Ever. The pumpkin spice with a shot of espresso was awesome. Even better was the simple spicy hot chocolate - deliciously decadent and rich, without being too bitter or thick. Sooo good! The girls working there were very nice.

It is a small shabby-chic type of place with a few tables. Luckily, when we went in there was no one else there so my group of six pretty much took up the whole seating area. If you are looking to try the best hot chocolate around, you need to get this place on your list!
