Wi-Fi in London Underground

Just curious, yes, they have Wi-Fi in the London underground

Free Wi-Fi on the London Underground as an O2 Customer

O2 WiFi
You may or may not be aware that O2 have recently joined forces with Virgin Media to offer O2 customers free Wi-Fi access on the London Underground. That’s great news for anyone who lives or works in London, since travelling the Underground can be wasted time at best and soul destroying at worst, so at least with free Wi-Fi you’ll be able to check your email and be at least a little productive.

You might not be entirely clear on how you access this free Wi-Fi, but O2 have you covered there too, as they’ve released a handy video running you through the setup process. We’ll talk you through the process too, but first why not check the video below.

As you can see it shouldn’t take long to get up and running. Step one is to register with O2 Wi-Fi. There’s every chance that you’ve already done that as there are a number of free O2 Wi-Fi hotspots around, but if not simply keep an eye out for one, then log in and fill out a few details- or to make things even easier just head to o2wifi.co.uk at any time and you can register from there. There’s also an app available for iOS and Android, which can also be used to register. You don’t even have to be an O2 customer to use free O2 Wi-Fi- so it’s worth registering whatever network you’re with.

Once registered you’ll be able to instantly connect to any O2 Wi-Fi hotspot in future, but there’s still a little more to do before you can connect to Virgin Media’s London Underground hotspots.

Step two is to find a London Underground Wi-Fi hotspot. That should be easily done as they can be found in over 120 tube stations across London. Once you’ve found one you need to select Virgin Media Wi-Fi from the list of available networks.

If you then open your web browser you’ll be directed to Virgin Media’s Wi-Fi portal. Select the ‘other providers’ option, then tap on O2. You’ll now be asked to enter your O2 mobile number and accept the terms and conditions.

Virgin Media will then check your number and assuming you’ve already registered with O2 Wi-Fi you should then be able to access the internet- though you will have to sit through a short advert first.

Best of all this is a one off setup process, so after you’ve done all that for the first time you never have to again- you’ll simply be able to connect to Wi-Fi automatically whenever you use the London Underground. It’s worth noting that although anyone can use O2’s own free Wi-Fi networks you do have to be an O2 customer to access free Wi-Fi on Virgin Media’s service using the rest of this guide.

Given the number of people who travel on the underground every day this could be a huge coup for O2, giving them a selling point over some other networks- at least for users based in London.

It should be noted that customers of Virgin Media, Vodafone and EE can all access the service for free.
