Philip Marie...too gentrified or just right?

I was reading someone's comments about dining in Greenwich Village, and I ran across the words"Of course, you can always go to Philip Marie or someplace like that."

Someplace like what?

Well, Yelp again to the rescue...WELL, this place sure draws mixed reactions!!

Just recently had dinner with friends, there were 4 of us.  After a very long, long hiatus from visiting Philip Marie, I was pleasantly surprised to find very good food, excellent friendly and knowledgeable service and decent wine choices. All priced well within their location and detail on quality.

This is a place that you go to for better quality food, not to fill up on endless cheap food and drinks. There's so much more to Philip Marie than just "a brunch spot" in the village.

That said, here's what dinner was like. We ordered from the tapas menu for our appetizers. Good enough to have 3 tapas apps for 4 people. It worked well and the choices were flavorful:  mushroom and artichokes, broccoli rabe, and tomato and mozzarella crostini.  All very well prepared and delicious.

Entrees is where we have 2 people ordering the fish tacos and 2 ordering the chicken confit.  Both were simply superb. I ordered the fish tacos and split my dinner to have half of the chicken confit. The fish inside the taco changes with the day, ours was red snapper. It was well seasoned and kinda spicy which I really like. The mango salsa and crunchy pomme frite were excellent accompaniments. The chicken was tender and also well prepared with proper seasonings.

I would like to see more of a wine list, yet the wait staff were more than accommodating in allowing me to taste several of the wines making it simple for me to find the one that really worked for me.

Absolute bummer. I used to frequent this place for brunch and I don't know whether it's changed hands or what, but as they say, "it ain't what it used to be".

My friend and I came in right as they opened. We were seated, had breakfast brought out, and that is where the problems began.

My eggs (ordered poached) were cooked through like two hockey pucks, and the home fries were stone cold. If I were to guess, I'd imagine they came from a bucket in the fridge, and were "heated up" before being unceremoniously dumped on my plate. When I asked for them to correct it, they took the plate back, threw it in in the microwave (I could tell because my mixed greens were hot) and added two poached eggs. Unreal. I had to ask, incredulously, for a new breakfast to be made fresh.

My friend had a hair in hers, and they screwed hers up twice as well. Being that we were the only ones in there, that was pretty bad.

Also, staff was pretty unapologetic about it. They offered nothing as a comp--not even drinks.

So, I calculate that both I and my friends have probable spent a few thousand dollars there, and that is going to stop.

When a restaurant gets complacent, it dies. I hope this doesn't happen with them and they have some sort of rebirth because they were a great option in the hood for a long time.

Bottomless mimosas and smoked salmon 3-eggs benedict with a side of potatoes and fruit on a stick for $25. Very reasonable pricing for the amount you get, but the food was not great.

It came out lukewarm, and I felt the need to add hot sauce to it for added flavor.

Otherwise, I had a nice time here. We sat very comfortably here, which is a plus because some brunch places are so cramped and loud that it becomes more overwhelming than relaxing. I also really liked the staff and service here. My glass was never half empty of mimosa.

We didn't have to wait for a table, but it got pretty busy while we were eating. I would probably only come here again if I were the in the neighborhood already and there were no wait.

If you're looking for a brunch with bloody marys and mimosas, this is a great spot.  We had a pretty big group because it was one of my girlfriend's birthdays, but they took our reservation without question. I normally choose eggs Benedict, but as soon as I saw the crab cake Benedict I was sold. I will be coming back for this dish for sure.  The unlimited bloody marys and mimosas were great and for $24.95 it was a great deal.  As soon as I sat down I told my server to keep them coming as did the other girls, and whenever he saw our glasses empty he was over as soon as he could. It was just a great occasion for all of us to celebrate together, and an awesome deal.

Yeah, was there yesterday for their dinner special and they told us we had to sit either outside or at the bar to partake in this special.  Of course it says nothing about on their site.  And guess what? We were the only ones there.  If that's their logic then I'm concerned about who their choosing to make their food. We got up and left.  By the way, the humidity was unbearable.

Loved Philip Marie! With the plethora of places to choose from for "bottomless brunch"  in the village, it's always good to find another one that's affordable, has a great atmosphere, and has good food!

I came here with 4 friends, one of whom was celebrating a birthday, and we were sat outside in a really great location so we could people watch the people of the west village (always a hoot...). It's 24.95 for 1 hr and 15 min of mimosas and bloody maries + food. 1 hr 15 is a bit on the lower side but not if you're champs at chugging drinks like me and my buds!

We quickly made friends with the mimosa pouring (that's how you gotta run these brunch places guys!) and service was great from then on. Whenever our glasses were empty (which was quite often, believe me), we made eye contact with him and he was back with a full pitcher!

The menu had a pretty wide assortment of things. We ordered the eggs benedict, shrimp burrito, quesadilla, and two other entrees that I can't remember. I wasn't feeling too adventurous that day so I went with the eggs benedict and I was not dissappointed. I was particularly happy with the way that the home fries were seasoned. But of course, eggs benedict is kind of difficult to make HORRIBLY. I tried bites of my friends dishes and have got to say that they did an awesome quesadilla! There was just the right amount of cheese and salsa.

By the end we were pleasantly buzzed and our stomachs were very happy! I would definitely come back for brunch in the future.
