A long time ago, Manhattan switched over from the old street signs like this one seen in the window of the Clover Deli at 34th Street and 2nd Avenue...For a long while all Manhattan signs were all caps, black on yellow...
New ones now --they are still putting them in, costs a lot of money during the recession...--new ones are upper and lower case ( supposedly easier to read) with white letters on green background.
