Winter doorway, new buildings

Back during the "Energy Crisis" ( what year was that? Late 1980's it seems to me)NYC passed a law that all doors of commercial restaurants etc. had to have extra entrances built to help keep out cold air in winter...like this ungainly addition.

Harsh contrast between mellower older architecture and new buildings everywher around here.
