As the Director of Continuation of the Training Institute for Mental Health I am excited to announce a CE program about:  RACE AND PSYCHOANALYSIS. PLEASE SAVE THESE DATES: October 16, 23, 30 and November 6 (1:30 - 4:30). The faculty will include the mental health professionals listed below.  All have participated in Black Psychoanalysts Speak. Dr. C. Jama Adams,PhD is a clinical psychologist with psychoanalytic inclinations. He has extensive experience working with preschoolers, adolescents and their families. He is also a graduate of the White Institute's program in Organizational Development. Dr. Adams is Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Africana Studies at John College of Criminal Justice-CUNY and has published on a variety of topics including psychotherapy and Black masculinities, organizational issues in preschools, neo-liberalism and low income youth, and Africana persons in China. Dr. Janice O. Bennett, PhD, is a graduate of New York University’s Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis and is a Supervisor at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP). She was formerly the Director of the Postdoctoral Program in College Mental Health at Columbia University’s Health Services Counseling and Psychological Services. She has been in private practice for 20 +years and is frequently invited to speak about race and cultural issues in Psychology and Psychoanalysis. Dr. Cheryl Thompson, PhD is a supervisor on the Relational Track at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. She is also a supervisor at CPPNJ (Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of New Jersey. She is a graduate of the doctoral and postdoctoral programs of the Derner Institute at Adelphi University.  She was an Associate Professor of Professional Psychology and Family Therapy at Seton Hall University. She has long -term interest in the effects of disorders of attachment and anti-social behavior. She has published many articles and book chapters about the effects of race and personality development Dr. Kirkland C. Vaughans, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and a psychoanalyst with a private practice in New York City. He is the founding editor of the Journal of Infant, Child, and Adolescent Psychotherapy and first-editor of the two-volume book, The Psychology of Black Boys and Adolescents.  He is a senior adjunct professor of psychology at the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University and a faculty member of their Postgraduate Program in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, a clinical supervisor at the National Institute for Psychotherapies, and visiting faculty member at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR). He is also an Honorary Member of IPTAR. He is a school psychologist at Hempstead High School and the former Regional Director of the now defunct New Hope Guild Centers of Brooklyn. He has published articles on the intergenerational transmission of trauma among African Americans and presented widely on topics effecting Black male youth. He also serves as chairman of the Board of Directors for the Harlem Family Psychoanalytic Institute. He is an active member of the Research Council of the New York City Young men’s Initiative.
