Citt Council Member Mark Levine

Lawrence --
9 billion plastic bags are generated in the New York City every year, and it costs us by diminishing the health of our neighborhoods and the sustainability of our environment. To fix this, the City Council passed a bill to finally disincentivize our over-consumption of plastic bags, however we recognize that there will be a transition for families and hard-working New Yorkers who are trying to make ends meet.

With that in mind, I want to invite you to join me and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito at our free reusable bag giveaway event. Get you your free reuseable bag and help our city along the path to a more sustainable future. See the details below, and I hope to see you there on Friday.
  • WHAT: Free Reuseable Bag Giveway Event
  • WHEN: Friday, May 27 from 10am-11am; Remarks by Speaker Mark-Viverito and Council Member Levine will begin at 10:30

Join Me and New Yorkers for Parks and Rally for our Green Spaces
As our city continues to grow, providing quality green space is crucial to making life more livable for all New Yorkers. This means we have to invest in the maintenance workers and gardeners who ensure our parks can thrive, and build new green spaces in communities that have been long neglected.

While I’m thrilled to see more capital funding for anchor parks in this year’s Executive Budget, the jobs of 150 maintenance workers and gardeners are at risk without any proposed baselined funding. And I, along with my colleagues are once again pushing for the city to extend the beach and pool season, increase funding for park security, and restore funding to reverse the backlog of 25,000 tree stumps littered across too many neighborhoods.

Please join me, and a broad coalition of activists, including, New Yorkers for Parks, The New York League of Conservation Voters, American Society of Landscape Architects, and community gardens enthusiasts at a rally at City Hall to stand up and fight for our parks.
  • WHAT: Rally for City Parks
  • WHEN: Wednesday, May 25, 10 AM
  • WHERE: Steps of City Hall

Trees NY's Tree Stewardship Volunteer Event

My office and Trees New York is partnering to host a Tree Stewardship Volunteer Event.

In New York City, where there is limited funding for tree maintenance but significant need, volunteer stewardship is crucial to the survival of street trees.

Join us as we remove litter from tree beds, cultivate soil, mulch, water and plant flowers.

Prepare for the day as if you’re going hiking. Wear a backpack that you keep on through the whole event, bring water to stay hydrated, wear sturdy shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty. Bring a hat and/or sunblock. Get ready to have fun and get some exercise in the urban forest!
  • WHAT: Tree Stewardship Volunteer Event
  • WHEN: Saturday, June 18 from 10am-12pm
  • WHERE: 152nd Broadway and Riverside (Northwest Corner)
