I repair FDNY fire trucks for ferrara fire apparatus.
Diesel Mechanic (Current Employee), Little Ferry, NJ – February 14, 2014
Pros: the pay, and being a road technician.
Cons: working for a company that has poorly skilled managers, and supervisors.
A typical day at ferrara is as follows. One week we are instructed to report to work at 07:30. The following week or so the workers are instructed to report to work at 06:00. Once you are assigned to do a job, shortly after you will be pulled from that job and placed on another. The following day supervision wants to know why you haven't completed the first job.
I have learned how to waste thousands of dollars do to mismanagement.
All the managers / supervisors at the ferrara NJ shop need more leadership skills.
The co-workers are good, however some are very fearful for taking initiative on any given job on any given day.
The hardest part of the job is not knowing if there will be a job the next day due to the instability of the company.
The most enjoyable part of the job is while I'm at a fire house working on a truck. Seeing the smile on officer and crew's face when I tell them the truck can go back into service. Knowing that I correct the problem.

Lots of work, but dont expect to be treated fairly or it gain you any advancement. Poor pay and doesn't get any better the longer you are there.
No time for family or life, and will assure you cant afford not to work as much as possible.

Cons: 100% Travel
Great place to work if you love to travel non stop and meet new people all the time. Rewarding because you get to work with fellow fire fighters and help them learn new material.
Fast pace environment

Cons: Not able to move up in the company
A typical day a work consists of building fire trucks to customer specifications. Programming and troubleshooting trucks to ensure quality products are being manufactured.

Pros: Plenty of chances for overtime and a great staff to work with

I learned what it takes to run a small staff to ensure that the maintenance responsibilities and duties were met by making sure the staff always completed their task on time. I demonstrated the ability to handle a heavy workload.
Poor management

dismissed without explanation after working over 50 hour week and working almost every weekend. I loved the work and co worker but the management sucks and the pay does not mach the workload.
Then to top it all off you only get a 30 minutes lunch and cant even leave the building to go to your vehicle until u clock out for the day its like a jail once u clock in. I would say if you are interested in working there just do it for the experience not for the long hall
