FIRE DEPARTMENT MOTORCYCLE CRASH WHILE RESPONDING (yeah-FD Motorcycle!)

Thursday, May 28, 2015   A Firefighter in South America suffered non-life-threatening injuries when his Fire Department motorcycle hit a car in Brasília, the capital city of Brazil, on Wednesday. The civilian car driver was not injured. The FF was responding to a car crash where a child was hit. The child was assisted by another emergency unit and taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Many Fire Departments in Brazil, especially in big cities, use motorcycles for the first response, to minimize the delay caused by traffic jams. While rare, these do exist in the USA as well-but is much more common overseas.

RIP CAPTAIN
RIP CAPTAIN

FIREFIGHTER LINE OF DUTY DEATH LEADS TO MULTIPLE LAWSUITS INCLUDING THE INCIDENT COMMANDER

Thursday, May 28, 2015   The mother of a Nutter Fort (West Virginia) Firefighter has sued five companies involved in working on two cell towers that collapsed killing two employees, as well as her son (in the Line of Duty) when he tried to help.

The lawsuit also names the Summit Park Volunteer Fire Department and its former chief, Brenda Fragmin, as defendants. It cites a NIOSH investigation that “identified an ineffective incident command on the part of Defendant Summit Park and Defendant Fragmin as one of the contributing factors.”

Garrett was killed when a second tower collapsed and part of it struck him after Fragmin had told him and other Nutter Fort volunteer firefighters to remove a worker who had been injured when the first, larger tower had fallen, the lawsuit asserts.
Companies named as defendants are S&S Communications Specialists Inc. of Oklahoma; SBA Communications Corp. of Florida; and three other out-of-state firms, FDH Inc., FDH Engineering Inc. an... [ more ]

FIRE OFFICERS: WE MUST OWN THE FIREGROUND FROM THE START-BECAUSE WE OWN THE OUTCOME REGARDLESS. (Commentary)

Tuesday, May 26, 2015   Another fire we can learn from. Fire Officers must fully appreciate the fact that when making decisions, and especially when committing firefighters at a fire, that their decisions, orders and the FF's actions will directly impact the outcome. Seem simple? One would think. Watch the below video and ask yourself (and those at your firehouse kitchen table) the same question as if you were the boss. This building is vacant and has been for 3 years. Is there any reason that this would be anything other than a defensive fire? Can you think of any reason you would send your Firefighters to the roof on this fire?

Does placing your firefighters (on the roof, near the hole already made by the fire) make sense when the apparatus that can supply the needed elevated stream sits there... not being used?

FIREFIGHTER DIES IN THE LINE OF DUTY-ATTEMPTED RESCUE

Sunday, May 24, 2015   An Oklahoma Firefighter is dead, another injured, after they were swept down a storm drain during heavy rains in Claremore (NE of Tulsa).
Crews were called to several duplex units just off Archer Court near Highway 20 around 2230 hours last night, Saturday, to rescue around ten people who were stuck inside their homes by rising waters.
Around 2330, one of the Firefighters was swept into a storm drain. Reports are that the waters were so high, the firefighter likely never saw the storm drain that would soon sweep him to his death.
Another firefighter, Zane James, rushed to the first firefighter's aid, but would soon end up swept into the drain himself.
James was washed about 200 yards down the length of the drain, but suffered only minor injuries.
It took rescue crews about two hours to recover the LODD Firefighter's body.

The ten people flooded from their homes were sent to a nearby red cross shelter.
