BRONX (WABC) --
The FDNY rescued a young boy who wandered onto the frozen Bronx River Thursday.The dramatic scene played out near the intersection of Bronx River Avenue and Westchester Avenue around 4:30 p.m., and the entire rescue was caught on NewsCopter7 live only on Eyewitness News First at Four.
The boy, believed to be 10, could be seen standing still on the ice as firefighters scrambled to reach him.
One first responder jumped into the water near the shore, while fellow rescuers lowered a ladder down the side of a bluff. The firefighter in the water was able to pass the ladder to the boy, who climbed over the broken ice to safety.
There was reportedly a second child, a girl, with him who earlier fell into the water but managed to get herself out before firefighters arrived.
The kids were playing in a park area with benches and a pavilion called Concrete Park, according to the witnesses.
Both children were evaluated at the scene before being taken to Jacobi Hospital for observation. The firefighter who went into the water was taken to the hospital.
