DENNIS SMITH REMEMBERS CHIEF HARVEY EISNER & FH'S BRUCE BOWLING

Monday, October 27, 2014  As the fire service mourns the sudden loss of fire service icon, friend and Brother, Chief Harvey Eisner, I thought you would find comfort and a bit of enjoyment (as I have) learning how "it" all started-meaning Firehouse Magazine...and so much that followed that.

At the risk of thinking that some of our younger Secret List members don't know who Dennis Smith is, I'll give you a very quick briefing.

Dennis is a retired firefighter from FDNY. He is best known for writing the best selling memoir Report from Engine Co. 82, a chronicle of his career as a firefighter with the New York City Fire Department in a South Bronx firehouse - the worlds busiest - during the late 1960s and into the 1970s. (Note-if you don't have "Report from Eng Co 82" in your personal library-get it. Seriously. Get it. $14.00 Here is a link ) http://www.fire-police-ems.com/books/br1001.shtml
Dennis also founded Firehouse magazine in 1976. While the editor and publisher of Fi... [ more ]

LAFD Battles Blaze at Venice Storage Facility; Injuring 8 Firefighters

FireLensMan Video
Monday, October 27, 2014  Los Angeles firefighters relentlessly battled an extremely hot and stubborn major emergency blaze Saturday night at a Venice public storage facility, that led to the injury of eight LAFD responders.

At 7:37 PM on October 25, 2014, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a structure fire at Extra Space Storage, located at 658 Venice Blvd. They found a two-story 80,874 square foot storage facility with smoke on the second floor.

Several interior storage units were well involved in fire, and flames spread rapidly as the intense heat and thick smoke banked down to floor level. Firefighters battled until they were low on air, and had to exit to get new air-bottles, then rejoined the fight. Waves of additional firefighters were continuously assigned through the night to battle the intense and challenging fire.

The building's metal roof made it difficult to vertically ventilate with saws to allow heat and smoke to release. Firefighters b... [ more ]

CANADIAN LODD - SHIPPING CONTAINER EXPLOSION - RULED ACCIDENTIAL

Sunday, October 26, 2014  The death of an Enderby firefighter in the line of duty in December 2011 has officially been classified as accidental.

In a four-page report, coroner Margaret Janzen said the death of Daniel Joseph Botkin, 25, was caused by blunt force trauma to the head and chest.

Janzen said Botkin died instantly after being struck by a metal door, the result of an explosion of a shipping container during a fire which broke out in the early morning hours of Dec. 29, 2011 at a log home construction site on the outskirts of Enderby.

Enderby Fire Department responded to the call shortly before 4 a.m. and discovered a modular trailer on the southside of the facility engulfed in flames, and that the roof of the main building had also caught fire.

An eight-foot-by-40-foot shipping container was located on the southeast side of the main building, containing chainsaws and a pressure washer. There was no fuel stored in the container but there was a ... [ more ]

FF KILLS PIT BULL AFTER BEING ATTACKED AT FIRE

Saturday, October 25, 2014  Two pit bulls escaped from their yard in Ben Lomond, attacked neighbors, and charged at a firefighter, officials said.

VIDEO: Watch the story here

The dogs, named Nani and Poppa, lived with a family in a house on the 8000 block of Glen Arbor Road.

Neighbor Alex Lackides said he witnessed Wednesday afternoon's attack.

"I heard my neighbor's daughter scream and start to cry. I stopped what I was doing, ran out with a stick, and sure enough she had been bitten on the knee and bitten on the elbow. The dog was roaming around challenging anything and everything," Lackides said.

Jared Kropp tried to get the pit bulls off the street but he was also attacked.

"It definitely was a little shocking. I got bit by two dogs at the same time," Kropp said.

REPORT RELEASED ABOUT 3 FFs TRAPPED AT BEAVER FIRE

WildlandFireLLC Video
Friday, October 24, 2014  A facilitated learning analysis has been released about the entrapment of three firefighters August 11, 2014 on the Beaver Fire northwest of Yreka, California.

Entrapped that day were a Dozer Operator (DZOP), a Heavy Equipment Boss (HEQB), and a Heavy Equipment Boss Trainee (HEQBt). They all got inside fire shelters in a small deployment site that was not large enough to qualify as a safety zone. Their injuries included some first and second degree burns, but overnight hospitalization was not required.

The dozer operator’s story in his own words:

By the time I got off the dozer, the fire had closed in on two sides—and was closing in on my third and fourth sides. I worked as long as I could to get us more protection. I intended to push up more berms. Embers were falling everywhere. I spent too much time getting dug in. I backed the cat i... [ more ]

Thursday, October 23, 2014  A construction worker set fire to his Richland apartment and attacked firefighters when they showed up to put the small blaze out, according to police.

He was booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of arson, assault and resisting arrest.
