The Census Bureau calculated that whites would cease to make up a majority of Americans in the year 2042, but Guy Garcia, journalist and president of new mainstream initiatives at EthniFacts, expands the definition and says multicultural Americans will actually move into the majority tomorrow. He and Maria Hinojosa, host of NPR's Latino USA (airing Sundays at 6am and 7pm on AM820), talk about who's counting and why.

EVENT:  Maria Hinojosa and Guy Garcia's press conference on the new multicultural majority happens August 22 at 10 a.m. at Father Duffy Plaza in Times Square, between 46th and 47th Streets.

Guests:

Guy Garcia and Maria Hinojosa

The decrease in Whites is a dream come true for liberal self hating Whites. The problem is who will run business, heal the sick, get up the morning and go to work and stifle drug sales. Who, the folks in Ferguson, really?

The US needs VOTER ID to ensure that voting is fair and that the participants are citizens.
VOTER ID benefits all parties and hurts those who want to cheat.
Plus the US needs to secure its borders.
What nations have open borders? Cuba, Russia, China, UK, France? No way Jose.

Wasn't George Zimmerman some kind of mixed race Latino"? He is as much a glimpse of our "multicultural future" as anything so don't get so excited, history might not go the way you're hoping.

This report reminds me how important voting is, and why reaching out to inform and register new voters is so crucial. Also, a reminder of the new law enabling states to make it more difficult for minority people to vote. What can be done to push back or is it too late?

What is supposed to be quintissentially "American" is our allegiance to our unique Constitution, and not ethnic, racial or religious colorings. But the reality is that ethicity in most cases trumps democracy, and while the theory that allegiance to the Constitution will suffice, we will have to see what reality does to that theory.

illfg- you nailed it. This is all so silly.
My wife is half "white" (mother is English/Scottish/Irish mutt), father is Turkish. Is she mixed? Is she Middle Eastern? Is she European if her dad was from the European side of Istanbul? Is she Asian (he was born in Ankara)? Who cares?! The only thing that matters is power and socioeconomic status. Why should the son of a black cardiologist get college admission preference over a poor white kid from Appalachia whoo is trying to be the first in his family to go to college? It's all money. For those who doubt, just remember the OJ trial.

@Mr. Bad, I totally agree. Her over-pronunciation of "Latino" and everything else is part of her brand. It's so pathetic... we get it! It's fun to hate white people.

The late, lamented Samuel Huntington of Harvard(!) shared your concern about the future of America and it's cultural cohesion, even survival.
His last book in 2005 addressed this-

Oh dear, the BL substitute appears to have missed the point of Colbert. He claimed that the persona who claims "I don't see race" is COLBERT's assertion of white superiority! It's satire, or don't you quite get that? his persona, not Colbert, is saying this. He's satirizing people who don't see race because they're white and don't need to. Sigh. Brian often irritates me, but he rarely makes this sort of slip.

this country is way too focused on race. how about just being a PERSON, a HUMAN BEING? or an AMERICAN?
America will always be divided until this type of mentality ceases to exist.

The caller Nelly unfortunately exemplifies the liability of immigration for black people and, in turn, this country: They come here to leverage the prosperity and rights and opportunity that black people endured death and brutality for, and yet they (1) are not required to be adequately educated about American history, (2) exert negative net economic pressure on the majority of Americans, and (3) tend to 'assimilate' by jumping on the hate-black bandwagon....
Well-intentioned programs like this one, that nevertheless evade these harsh realities, prevent the true fruitful realization of American immigration.

I was a little surprised by the wording of the spot on Morning Edition which prefaced this discussion:

What is "American" anyhow? By and large it once meant White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, and that group set the template for what was meant by "American." That essentially ceased to be the case in the mid-1960s. Now it only means a citizen of the United States. As the once white majority who were the unofficial template and ruling class continues to shrink, most will circle the wagons and say, "So much and no further." They will not give up their white skins and their culture. That is why I believe that by the end of the century the country will undergo a de facto partitioning, like "Palestine" but hopefully there won't be a civil war. Hopefully the partition will be peaceful and non-violent.

I just want to say that Maria Hinojosa is a pompous blowhard. Is this a commercial for her "brand" or just an ego trip? Every other sentence seems to be about how important her work is or how well placed she is personally to give us the answers to a question nobody is asking, she admits she has to produce this junk because nobody else will!! Hint hint, maybe it's because this project is thinly veiled political advocacy for illegal immigration.

As an American from the USA, I fill in the sections on forms that ask for my race or ethnicity with the term human. Once, a census worker came to my house and was not satisfied with my answer. He INSISTED that I had to fill it out "properly." When I continued to resist, HE filled it out "for me." Wonder what would happen if everyone refused to answer those questions?

"Majority" as an important cultural term of power because Americans believe the "majority rules." If whites aren't the "majority" any more, will white be able to rule? That fear is what drives racist backlash to brown/black populations.

A few years ago it was established that over 85% of the British, yes, those wonderful WASPs, actually had their DNA traced to a tiny region in the north of Spain. We're all "Native" to where we live people. Get used to it.

Yikes. This "conversation" on race could have been from 10/20/30+ years ago.
At some point, the "I had to choose a box" line is such a bore (race and gender classes are always troubling to some- no matter how constructed). And does "Latino" work for a Spaniard? A friend gets offended when the term is used about her.
This father of a biracial kid has no fear of this. America has changed, is changing, sometime with great difficulty (race), sometimes, comparatively, easiER, (gays). But we are working on it.
I don't fear our ability to adapt. It's what we do!

there is no such thing as a latino. that's like saying "European" or "Arab" or "Asian". Spanish speaking peoples barely speak the same "spanish" and have different food and culture. Additionally, the racism against native indian "latinos" by the spanish decent latinos is just as bad as racism anywhere. Cubans are not the same as Puerto Ricans who are not the same as Dominians or Mexicans. the Latino concept was made for voting power. its a non homogeneous group

Can we please stop inter-changing "ethnicity" with race. My Race is white HOWEVER my ETHNICITY is GREEK. I don't relate at all to the stereotypical idea of white and all it comes with. In fact not too long ago my ETHNICITY (people)was not considered WHITE along with many other ethnicities.

Mexicans and South Asians will just become Whites the same way the Irish, Italians and Jews did 100 years ago. All the people hoping that flooding America with Mexicans will turn the place into some progressive paradise with a permanent underclass of low cost maids will be disappointed. Abortion rights may be cancelled permanently though thanks to all the new Catholics, otherwise not much will change really.

I hope I am wrong, but I suspect that by 2100 AD the US will have split into three countries, just as Yugoslavia split into six: A white America, a black America and a hispanic America. The UK is splitting up with Scotland apparently going its own way again. Czechoslovakia, a quite democratic country, peacefully split into the Czech and Slovak republics. My reading of history indicates that in most cases multicultural, multiethnic countries eventually split up. That ethnicity trumps democracy. Again, I hope the USA proves to be an exception, but we'll see when whites are less than 50% and the Senate and Congress also become less than 50% white. That is when the rubber will meet the road and the truth will come out. I hope the country can stay together, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Great point, John.
Victor Davis Hanson from Stanford's Hoover Institute interviewed Mexican- Americans in California on their goals and expectations in the U.S. ... and it's a wonderful refutation of the Liberal White Boy /Identity Politics Industry party line.
They said "We didn't come here to preserve our Mexican "culture", that's WHY we emigrated - we came here to be Americans, and if California becomes another Mexico - we'll move to Oregon, and Oregon becomes like Mexico - we'll move to Canada."
LOL, only the confused, arrogant "we know better" pandering Left could politicize and impose such a bizarre motivation onto other people's interpretations of their motivations.

News flash to those who look forward to a non-white America.
1) The concept of who is white will shift to include new groups, like it has done for 400 years;
2) Just because the majority is non-white does not mean an embracing of a Black agenda, most ethnics don't want anything to do with a "black Agenda" which equal social chaos, look at africa and sadly Furgeson;
3) All the new ethnics, arabs, real africans, hispanics, south east asians and asians want to live in a western, judeo-christian world.
So don't be too quick to play trumpets.

Just imagine if the contrived premise of this segment was reversed … and the story was : “Whites now dominate the culture , yippee ... rah, rah, rah ... and here’s why this is good news!”
How racist would the low-information voters here label it, LOL?
And just who are these “whites” anyway? When does “multicultural” become a racial designation? Isn’t that “multiracial”? And what do you tell the many Latinos who look “white” and purposely checked the “caucasian” box on their census forms?
The Founders, many immigrants themselves, knew what they were doing when they emphasized “e pluribus unum” ... which means “out of many, one” ... as the best chance for a cohesive, equal society - no matter how hard Liberal White Boy Radio Shows try to debase that concept.
