Xbox One now offers game pre-loading, full-game demos on the way August 21, 2014 at 4:26 pm

Microsoft can’t stop releasing new features for the Xbox One. Hot off the heels of a brand new system update, news has surfaced regarding two new services available for the Xbox One: the ability to pre-load games before the official release, and the possibility of time-limited demos of full games for Gold members.
  • PS4 stock, in an Amazon warehouse

The PS4 is still selling much faster than expected – and Sony doesn’t know why August 20, 2014 at 7:49 am

Sony’s PlayStation 4 console is lighting up sales charts, and even the company isn’t sure why. Could a reversal or collapse strike the console? We think not.
  • PS Now

PlayStation Now is even better than I hoped it would be August 19, 2014 at 10:22 am

I’ll be the first to admit that there is plenty of room for improvement, but let me explain why PS Now is actually better than I expected it to be.

August Xbox One system update brings 3D, remote downloads August 18, 2014 at 2:58 pm

This month’s Xbox One system update is rolling out today, and it adds some long-awaited features. 3D Blu-ray support, remote game downloads, and improved notifications are all being added. These frequent additions and refinements certainly aren’t a panacea for the Xbox One’s public perception problems, but these monthly updates go a long way in reassuring existing owners that Redmond isn’t resting on its laurels.
  • DirectX 12 logo

DirectX 12 reduces power consumption by 50%, boosts fps by 60% in new tech demo August 13, 2014 at 1:32 pm

At its Siggraph 2014 booth, Intel is showing off one of the first public demos of DirectX 12 and Direct3D 12 — and the improvement over older graphics APIs, such as DirectX 11, is really quite startling. The exact same demo under DirectX 12 consumed 50% less power than the DirectX 11 version. In a similar demo, the higher efficiency and lower overheads of DX12 allowed for a 60% increase in frame rate over DX11 while consuming the same amount of power. After an awful lot of talk about the benefits of Mantle, DirectX 12, and OpenGL NG, it’s very exciting to see an example of the actual real-world gains of these new graphics APIs.
  • Alienware Alpha console

Alienware Alpha is the first Steam Machine … but it runs Windows, and comes with a normal Xbox 360 gamepad August 13, 2014 at 9:01 am

Alienware has announced that its Steam Machine — the Alienware Alpha — will be available in November for $550. Curiously, though, the Alpha — which should be the first commercially available Steam Machine — won’t ship with Valve’s purpose-built Steam Controller. The Alpha also won’t ship with SteamOS. In fact, the Alienware Alpha is basically just a mid-spec Windows 8.1 PC that boots straight into Steam Big Picture Mode. Considering Steam Machines were meant to usher in a new era of Linux-based living room game consoles, with a magical gamepad that makes PC games playable from your couch, what exactly is Alienware playing at?

PS4 sales top 10 million worldwide, while Xbox One still only around 5 million August 13, 2014 at 6:31 am

At Gamescom in Germany, Sony has announced that the PlayStation 4 has sold over 10 million units since it launched nine months ago in November 2013. Meanwhile, Microsoft still hasn’t released any recent sales figures for the Xbox One, suggesting the console isn’t doing all that well. Our estimates put the Xbox One at around 5 million units sold through to customers — or about half the total sales of the PS4. According to a fateful quote by ex-Xbox chief Don Mattrick, it would appear that the PS4 has won this generation’s console war.

Microsoft at Gamescom: DLNA returns, white Xbox One, live TV streaming coming this year August 12, 2014 at 3:45 pm

A new white Xbox One bundle sans Kinect is coming in October, and a previously announced major third-party title is now officially an Xbox exclusive. In addition to the announcements on stage, a blog post from Microsoft’s Jeff Rubenstein outlined a handful of software improvements slated for the platform later this year. Among them, live television streaming to SmartGlass devices stands out as a major feature for Xbox One enthusiasts.
  • OpenGL

    OpenGL 4.5 released, next-gen OpenGL unveiled: Cross-platform Mantle killer, DX12 competitor August 11, 2014 at 12:45 pm

At Siggraph 2014, the Khronos Group has announced both OpenGL 4.5 and, more excitingly, the Next Generation OpenGL Initiative. OpenGL 4.5, except for some new Direct3D 11 emulation features for easier porting, is your fairly standard annual OpenGL update. Next Generation OpenGL (OpenGL NG), however, is a complete rebuild of the OpenGL API. The idea, much like AMD’s Mantle and DirectX 12, is to build an entirely new version of OpenGL that removes a lot of the abstraction, significantly reducing the overhead and inefficiencies when working at a low level with the bare metal GPU hardware.
