The nominations for the 2014 Tony Awards were announced on April 29. Here are our interviews with the nominees, including Idina Menzel, Stephen Fry, Tyne Daly.
"A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder" received 10 nominations, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book. Leonard spoke to Jefferson Mays, who is nominated for Lead Actor in a Play for playing 8 different roles.
"Mothers and Sons" was nominated for Best Play. Guest host Sarah Jessica Parker spoke to playwright Terrence McNally, actor Frederick Weller, and Tyne Daly, who’s nominated for Lead Actress in a Play. http://www.wnyc.org/story/mothers-and-sons/
The revival of "The Glass Menagerie" received 7 nominations, including Best Revival of a Play. Cherry Jones, Brian J. Smith and Celia Keenan-Bolger joined Leonard to talk about the production – and all were nominated for their work.
"Twelfth Night" received 7 nominations. Stephen Fry, Paul Chahidi, and Mark Rylance were all nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Play. They talked to Leonard about the production, which was presented in repertory with Richard III. Rylance received another nomination for his work in that play.
Debra Messing and Brian F. O’Byrne joined us to talk about starring in "Outside Mullingar" was nominated for Best Play.
"Beautiful – The Carole King Story" was nominated for 7 Tonys, including Best Musical. Guest host Sarah Jessica Parker spoke to Jessie Mueller who was nominated for playing the singer-songwriter and Doug McGrath who was nominated for Best Book.
Guest host Anna Sale talked to Idina Menzel, who was nominated for her work in "If/Then," which was also nominated for Best Score.
