Here are the latest headlines from the WNYC newsroom.
President Obama said the United States is deeply concerned about Russian military movements in Ukraine.
In a statement at the White House, the president warned Russia "there
will be costs" for any military intervention. The U.S. ambassador to
the United Nations, Samantha Power, has proposed an urgent mediation
mission to help resolve Ukraine's crisis. Earlier today, Ukraine's U.N.
ambassador told the U.N. Security Council that Russian armed forces
have seized Crimea's main airport.
Ukraine's fugitive president has resurfaced after fleeing Kiev last weekend. Viktor Yanukovych is in Russia, where he condemned his ouster as a "bandit coup."
A showdown over New York City charter schools is looming in Albany. Advocates for the schools said they'll be holding a rally at the state capital Tuesday, at the same time Mayor Bill de Blasio will be in town to push for his pre-kindergarten expansion plan. The new leadership at New York City's Department of Education has halted six school changes inherited from the Bloomberg administration.
New York City's medical examiner said actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman died from a toxic mix of heroin, cocaine, speed and other drugs. His overdose was ruled an accident.
California was lashed by heavy rains that the parched state so desperately needs, though the soaking brought with it traffic problems, power outages and the threat of mudslides. Rainfall totals exceeded six inches in some places by midday, but they were not nearly enough to offer long-term relief from the long-running drought.
Tonight will be frigid with a low near 16. Saturday, mostly sunny, warmer, high 35. Sunday, cloudy, rain and snow showers likely, high 37. A major winter storm may develop late Sunday night into Monday morning.
