What a great place to stay in New York City- luxurious, comfortable, clean, quiet, and close to everything. And when you come in the door, they greet you in French. Oh la-la!

My boyfriend and I recently came to New York for a quick getaway and I made reservations through Hotwire. I called the front desk one day beforehand to arrange for an early check-in, and while they informed me that it depended on availability and there was no guarantee, upon arriving at noon the next day they were indeed able to accommodate our request. The service was impeccable- the young man who checked us in was very professional and knowledgeable about the hotel, and even stepped around the desk to hand us our keys and escort us to the elevators. It's these kinds of touches that really make you feel welcome and treated at the Sofitel.

Our single queen room was incredibly spacious (especially for New York!) and tastefully decorated, with floor to ceiling windows. It was also the cleanest hotel room I can recall having the pleasure of staying in. The bathroom had very nice lighting, a full bathtub separate from the shower, and soaps made by Lanvin- and hanging in the front hall closet were two fluffy white bathrobes! Divine.

In the evening we enjoyed watching HBO on our room's television, and when it came time to fall asleep we couldn't hear any traffic noise or sounds coming from the other rooms- it was perfectly quiet. Had we stayed longer than one night we may have also taken advantage of additional perks, like the continental breakfast you can order through room service. We looked through the menu and definitely wished we could have sampled the basket of French pastries and coffee, or maybe even pancakes and omelets. They were quite pricey, but alas, next time we may have to splurge on them!

Finally, the location really couldn't be beat. We were a 4-5 minute walk away from Grand Central Station, right down the street (but also far enough away) from Times Square, and a couple of blocks south of Rockefeller Plaza.

The next time I plan a trip to New York, I will definitely return to the Sofitel.

The Sofitel is a great place to stay. I am giving four stars instead of five because the housekeeper for my room came into the room without knocking twice. By her third attempt at this, I had wised up and used the extra security latch.

Another mild gripe was that my room backed up to the elevator, and I could hear it beeping on occasion through the wall.

    On to the plusses....

    1. Great location a couple of blocks from Times Square. Away from the mass crowds and noise, but close to the action.
    2. Easy and friendly check in. I have stayed at larger places in NYC before and had real nightmare check-ins. Not here.
    3. Cosy, modern rooms. The shower was great and the oversized towels were a nice touch. The bed was sooooo comfortable.
    4. The lobby has a nice area for waiting and meeting others. It is classy without being ostentatious.

My experience with the hotel (barging maid aside ) pretty well convinced me to always look for a Sofitel or stay at this location when in NYC.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Sofitel New York for a week to provide coverage at my NYC office.
Everything about the hotel is impeccable: the concierge is always eager to help, the turn down service is sweet, the gentleman who delivered my room service was on time and extremely polite. The room was clean and I always had everything I needed.
The only negative about my stay was the experiences with a lady at the front desk. Stupidly I did not get her name but I dealt with her both at check in and at check out. She was not helpful and almost argumentative. At check in, I attempted to explain what I had arranged with my company about the bill. She was stubborn and rude. When I finally spoke to a different lady at the front desk, she was much sweeter and helped me get what I wanted.
At checkout I had the misfortune of getting the same lady and yet again she was unhelpful and almost argumentative. I asked for a copy of my invoice so I could have it for my records and to submit my expenses to my superior, she told me my invoice had been sent "elsewhere", could not specify where and refused to give me a copy. Later that day I reached out to the Sofitel Accounting department and was able to receive a copy of my invoice without any issues. I am still confused as to why she wanted to give me such a hard time.
It's quite a shame when such an amazing establishment places employees with such poor attitudes at the front desk. The next time I will stay here I will definitely be avoiding the rude lady and wait in line to speak to anyone else!
(I would have gladly given this 5 stars, but the negative experience impaced my rating)

Stayed here in an upper floor suite for one night on a Saturday and it was very nice.
    The Haves:
    * Great decor
    * Fresh flowers in lobby were just amazingly beautiful
    * Staff was fantastic and extremely helpful
    * Room was appointed quite well (bathroom was exceptional)
    * Close to Time Square and yet far enough away (you know what I mean).
    * Views of Empire State Bldg from room.
    * Room was very quiet

    The Have Nots:
    * Although room was nice, the walls were heavily scraped and had black marks on them in almost every room.

The Afterglow: Restful, beautiful, friendly (and gay friendly as well).

What a bad stay, we paid regular price and where put on the 24th floor in one of their old rooms. We had stayed there a number of times before because it is close to Broadway. We where there for 3 nights and complain about the air conditioning with its high pitch- they did nothing. The sink in the small bathroom did not drain- they did nothing. The king size bed slanted backwards towards the headboard so that you legs where higher then you head- they did nothing.
We spoke to the front desk and anyone we could to solve our problem and they seem to look the other way.  The only thing they where good at was taking our money- I asked for the general mangers card when we check out and I was told he did not work there anymore.

Wonderfully located between Broadway and the 5th avenue.  Really comfortable bed, quiet room (including the ventilation), and friendly service ("Bonjour!").  Would definitely come back (if I can still afford it ;)

Nearly everything about the experience during our recent 2 night stay was perfect but what really impressed me was the fact that they station a hotel employee at the lobby level near the elevators to assist guests or field any potential problem. In my mind that is the way to solve an issue before it becomes a problem. Seriously impressive customer service.

If you have to stay in midtown, this is the only place to stay.

I recently surprised my mom and her best friend with a trip to NYC to celebrate her 60th birthday. I booked a suite at the Sofitel through a third-party vendor; when i called to confirm the room two weeks beforehand, the gentleman I spoke with was kind enough to upgrade me to a sofa bed suite (for the comfort of our party) and also assured me of a room on a higher floor.

Upon arrival, we were given a beautiful room on the 27th floor with a lovely view, plenty of room, and a number of beautiful amenities. The staff at the hotel is one of the loveliest I have encountered--always smiling, offering assistance & generally being amiable. My party enjoyed breakfast both in room & in the hotel restaurant (room service got a slight edge). Turn down service was consistently lovely, & the cleaning staff never failed to make our room beautiful & presentable--in spite of our expanse of luggage & beauty products. In addition, the hotel delivered a celebration cake for my mother both on the day of our arrival & on her birthday itself. One final treat: a number of US Open players stayed here during the tournament; as a big tennis fan, the lobby provided a lovely venue for watching some of them come & go.

The Sofitel is a beautiful hotel & a great bargain. No doubt I'll be back.

I cannot speak highly enough about this hotel. I have stayed in SO many hotels in NYC and this one is the best. A few blocks from Bryant Park/Public Library. Close to Times Square but far enough away from it, and a stroll to the Rockefeller Center and the main area of 5th Ave.

The staff on Check-in and Concierge are so gracious and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. My suite was clean and ready on time and the bed was like lying on a fluffy pillow :)

When my daughter checked in, the staff made quite a fuss over her, taking a picture of her and inserting into a special kid's 'Travel Diary' for her to keep.

MOST IMPORTANT. This hotel is QUIET. I heard not one sound below, above or beside my room over 3 days. I would highly recommend staying here!!!

Excellent location.  This hotel was central to everything yet tucked away in other ways.  It was on a quieter street.  The hotel is also soundproof which I really appreciate being a light sleeper in a city that never sleeps like NY.

I loved the Parisian hospitality.  Not an oxymoron!  Louis at the front desk was very kind and helpful.  Doesn't hurt for us to practice our French.  Louis - let's swap the Paris Sofitel with the Saigon Sofitel, ok?!?

Accommodations were comfortable and chic.  I loved the room size and the coziness of it all.  A great place to return to after long days of shopping, eating, and sightseeing.

Visited on 8/10/13. Proposed to my now fiancée. The hotel snapped into awesome mode for the entire duration of our stay. Incredibly responsive, extremely friendly -- one of the very best hotel and dining experiences I have had. Highly recommended.

Best hotel for the value.  Location was great - near times square, grand central station and Fifth Ave.

Rooms were nice and cozy for NY.  Doorman was very polite and they give you loaner umbrellas when it rains.

I paid for the upgraded King room which has nice Hermes toiletries and a large shower room.

    Definitely return.

Worst hotel ever. Room not ready at check in, paid $75 extra per day for king bed on high floor was given 12th floor with two twins pushed together. Management argued with us that two twin beds were the same  size as a king. It is but dies not sleep like king.  Ice machine broken.  Bedding like rice paper and no top sheet.  Stay at the Westin for heavenly beds.

    This hotel is wonderful.
Truly huge bathroom, with full tub and wonderful shower.
Excellent gym, with all the boss balls, weight bars, and cardio machines you could want.
Quiet block next to the Harvard club, short walk to everything in midtown.
Anything we asked for we were given immediately.
The only down side I would say is the free Internet is somewhat slow, but perhaps the paid version is faster.
The rooms are truly soundproof which is rare in a midtown hotel.

OK check-in experience. Took a long time as the clerk actually went upstairs to see if the room was ready - there has to be a better way.

Room was small, well equipped with the exception of not having a coffee-maker.

Internet described as free is pathetic. Get ready to pay big bucks if you want acceptable service. I found this to be particularly offensive given the 350/night cost and the trivial incremental cost of even a 1 MB download speed - speed test showed 0.02 MB speed. Barely there.

We are staying for a week - I will update if it gets any better. And if Sofitel monitors this site then you may contact me in room 2106.

My family and I just returned home from a 4 night stay at the Sofitel in NYC. To be clear, this review is for the Prestige Suite and not a standard room.

    The Good:

The staff at the Sofitel is amazing. Albert (who may be a manager) is particularly helpful, thoughtful, and is just one of the nicest people I've ever met. There was some confusion in the system as we had two reservations but Albert quickly resolved things and apologized many times for the error (which I don't even think was Sofitel's fault).

We received, as a welcome gift, a beautiful presentation of a bottle of champagne, Evian, a box of chocolates, and an array of pastry featuring a giant chocolate Statue of Liberty. Talk about going above and beyond!

The location of the hotel is fantastic - close to shopping, Radio City, Times Square, and all the subways. The park is in walkable distance, as is Time Warner Center.

The room itself is showing some wear and tear but it is clean and the gigantic balcony attached to the Prestige Suite is extraordinary. Not sure if we'll ever find such a view again.

    The Bad:

My main issue with this hotel is that it is showing it's age. The carpets are in need of a serious clean/replacement, the furniture is scuffed, and some of the common areas are frankly just dirty. Some upgrades need to be made sooner, rather than later. That being said, the bed is one of the most comfortable I've ever stayed in and I slept amazingly well.

Overall I would likely stay at this hotel again. Not sure if the standard rooms are worth the price but I'm willing to check them out, simply because of the great service.

Nice and clean room and bathroom. The room was larger than what i expected in nyc. Staff was exceptionally helpful, they were always trying to make sure we felt comfortable. Turn down service every night was a great touch. Close to Times Square craziness but far enough away where there are not throngs of people everywhere you look. I'd definitely stay here again.

Despite our poor luck with Hotwire in Florida, we have very good results with it in New York City.  The Sofitel is no exception.  One of the nicest hotels in which I've ever stayed, the room was clean and comfortable, the incense-infused lobby was warm and inviting, and check-in was quick and efficient.  Our bathroom had over-sized towels, candles, a tub, and a rainshower showerhead.  Our room had a comfy king bed, and we had our own private terrace.  I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

    This hotel is yummy.

Between the L'Occitaine bath products, the Bose Stereo system and the enormous (by NY standards) bathroom complete with bathtub, this Sofitel NY is a nice spot to hang your hat on your visit to NYC.  The bed was fantastically comfortable, and made more heavenly with its high quality down down comforter, its down pillows and its high thread count sheets.

The Sofitel is a full-service hotel just a block from Times Square.  I would pick this place over many in town because it really benefits those who want a great location and having access to good service and amenities.

It's a little dated in parts, but overall its a top-notch spot.  Both Room Service and the Gym operate 24 hours and this spot is just a block or so from Times Square & Bryant Park.

We ended up being upgraded here after a glitch lead to an overbooking at their budget-friendly sister hotel up the street, the Mansfield.  Oh how I wished we had booked in here instead for the entire week and despite all the great upgrades we were offered, I think maybe I should have put my foot down to stay at the Sofitel.

The upside of the Mansfield (sister hotel) was the much larger suite, which had an apartment like feel, but I'm pretty sure quite a bit of he square footage we upgraded to at the older Mansfield, came directly from our cushy bathroom at the Sofitel NY, which will be missed and the full-service aspect of this hotel, makes it a great option.

this review is for the service i received through in house reservations - not for a stay at the hotel - cus that hasnt happened yet

Didi helped me book 9 reservations just now. the process probably took an hour, because i kept asking her to hold on to answer other phone calls and talk to all my colleagues.

Didi, despite the fact that i kept putting her on hold, was incredibly gracious and patient with me the entire process. She answered all my inane questions and made everything for me as seamless as could be. I'm also excited for my colleagues to stay at this hotel, because lets face it, it looks fan-freaking-tastic

thank you Didi, your service is stellar!!
