Crate and Barrel- Midtown East

Very good reviews for this place -- some complaints about customer service, but others say service is fine...some complain it is too easy to drop a lot of money here!

After years of procrastinating, I finally went to the Crate & Barrel on Madison Avenue for their annual upholstery sale.

I was pleasantly helped by Richard, who took the time to help me find the right slipcover color/material for my 9yr old sofa, originally purchased from said store and in 12-14 wks from now, it'll look like I bought a brand new sofa.

Thanks Richard, thanks Crate and Barrel. I will be back again.

I love Crate & Barrel and I am proud - but I mostly love that they have Marimekko home goods! The flagship store in midtown on Madison Avenue is great, with lots of pretty, tasteful products to browse and buy to create the ideal magazine-shoot-look we wish our apartments/homes had (and never keep because of the mess....or maybe that's just me?).

The space is open and light, which makes it feel pretty big, except for during the holidays when the place is packed with shoppers (oh, and for amazing sales, too). I recently noticed that on weekends, especially right now during the winter, the store is filled with couples putting together their wedding registries. Seriously, I went with my mom to start that process on a Saturday afternoon and while in the flatware section looked up and saw one couple after the next roaming around the different departments, huddling over items of real interest, with a sales person not far behind.

The only thing that bugs me about their displays is that they put the SAME product in multiple locations throughout the store, which is confusing and annoying (stop pushing the same glass style on me!). But otherwise, its a fun, and dangerous for me, place to shop in.

Customer Service requires some form of accuracy, oy!

Went in search of a particular ramekin Crate and Barrel offers. The associate available for questions took one look at the picture (picture, name and sku) of the item and led my boyfriend to a display filled with everything BUT that ramekin, saying he could find it there and then quickly scooted off and left him to his own devices.

I think it's important to know where product is located in the store you work in so that you can be helpful to your customers. Nothing rises the anxiety levels faster than walking in circles looking for something and not being able to find it and then being misguided by someone who should know where or how to find something because it is their job to do so. Frustrating experiences can often be avoided when associates just pay attention and make an effort to be informed and engaged.

But on a really positive note, I love Crate and Barrel's spring line. So fresh and light-hearted!

I enjoy this store.  the Team is super helpful without being pushy and just seem to genuinely care about assisting me. It never fails that someone will offer to bring my things up to the register so I don't have to carry them through the store.

I have shopped here for years mostly for work so when I am buying something I am usually buying at least 12 of something and this location consistently has enough stock to accommodate my needs.  I especially love the delivery option so I don't have to lug heavy bags out of the store.  Delivery is always quick.

If I have any beef at all it would be that they close too early and they don't have parking.

Crate & Barrel is one of the only stores left that puts Country of Origin stickers on its products from Croatia, USA, India, England, Italy, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Bolivia.  I spent $400 here and was happy with the quality of the products.

While other stores sell 95% junk made in China, this store only will shelf products that have Quality Control.

Surprisingly affordable for tableware, surprisingly expensive for furniture. I've bought both here and feel my money was well spent across the board. Everything is made to last, so choose wisely--you're going to have it for a long time.

Be aware that some items (most rugs, for example) must be shipped from the warehouse, and that can take a week or longer. I understand that they can't stock everything, but the lag time is a little disappointing.

I can't say enough about C&B salespeople. Everyone seems intelligent, courteous, helpful, and just plain nice. Today, we were buying a lighting fixture, and Michelle really hustled to get us information. She was happy to discuss pros and cons, and even pulled aside coworkers for their take. Then she energetically disassembled its gigantic box, so we could get it into a cab. (At this rate, I half-expected her to offer to install it.) I hope she works on commission; she deserves it.

This location is right across from my office so I frequently come here to look around and see how my future house would look if I could afford to blow some cash. (I don't own a house but it would be nice to furnish it with C&B stuff when I do)
They do have some sensibly priced items that I have picked up over the years to accent my kitchen and living room.  They also provide me with several ideas on furniture designs and prices that I can go and compare at other places.

The staff at this location is very friendly, helpful and always seem to be around when I need to ask a question. Plus, when I do ask, they actually know the answer or go find out what it is. This is very appreciated as I don't bother staff really but when I do want to know something, they are more than willing to find an answer. There was even one lady who saw me looking at several units and walked up to me with a small brochure to take home.  I didn't even have to ask.

This place is always super clean and stocked with multiple quantities of everything.  The products are well organized and the displays are pleasing to the eyes.

Pretty nice, and they were super friendly and helpful when I tried to exchange a broken cooling rack that I received as a gift.

They're also not as expensive as I thought they would be.  I saw a few mugs that were cheaper than online or at Bed Bath Beyond.

Usually good, may be sloping down.  This morning it took almost 5 minutes at the cashier to be attended to, someone told the very overweight guy that someone was waiting to pay, he turned, looked at me, turned back to some computer search.  No one was at cashier station, five minutes later there were three: the fat guy, some woman looking for a juice glass, and finally someone who apologized and thanked me for my patience.  I was about to buy a set of steak knives, walked over to wms-sonoma and spent the $250.

    OH SWEET HOLY HEAVEN.

Mentally, I always drop about $3,000 upon first walking into Crate & Barrel. I mean, if I'm going to have my dream kitchen, I'm TOTALLY going to drop $499.95 on the copper stand-alone Kitchen Aid mixer. I feel that almost goes without saying...

I just enjoy this location overall: the products are well-stocked and well-labeled. (When shopping for gifts off of a wedding registry, this is fantastic!) The sections (kitchen, home, et al) are all quartered out very sensibly. The flow of the floor plan works well and I never feel like I'm about to bump into another person...or, even scarier, bump into and knock down an entire row of Marin yellow dinner plates.

The staff is super helpful and friendly. The woman that rung me up, Bonnie, quickly took my order off of my cousin's wedding registry (...because I'll be damned if someone else gets them the same salad bowl and tongs I got them!). She wrapped it up in pretty green paper while we engaged in conversation over how green wrapping paper is TOTALLY better than silver wrapping paper. She was genuinely friendly and got my purchase ready and raring to go for my trek back home.

When I have thousands to blow on cute napkin holders and my dream set of bright red Le Creuset skillets and Dutch Ovens, this is where I shall blow said money. In the mean time, it's great for little purchases to put a bit more dazzle into my kitchen or bedroom.

I am not sure why, but I like this store better than the one downtown. And the staff could answer my question honestly as well. No Marimekko store, but they still have a lot of Marimekko bath & bedroom items including a very limited supply of fabric.

New York, Chicago or Boston, regardless of location, CB is always busy, hectic and crazed with shoppers trying to grab their favorite home goods.  I love the simple designs and affordability of CB items.  Their seasonal items are festive without being overdone.  I wish I could get all the different place settings, but I have nowhere to store them!

Flatware here is just ehhh, ok.  It doesn't have the same feel as Pottery Barn or Williams Sonoma.

I wouldn't buy appliances here as they are overpriced... but they do a great job of merchandising their Cuisinart mixers!   Better to get them at a Bed, Bath and Beyond.

I'm sure this store is insane during the holidays.  Love CB, but this store doesn't compare to the Chicago flagship.  It seems a bit cramped.

Too much foot traffic in this store.

I just prefer the one downtown on Houston street.

I received a $15 coupon in the mail that expired today, so obviously I had to schlepp up here to use it.

Well, so did everyone else on the Upper East Side. (and I did see people with the coupon)

All in all, standard stuff, but it seems more narrow and not as wide open as the one in the Cable Building on Houston street downtown.

I would never go out of my way to specifically come to this store.

Staff was friendly and helpful.   Checkout at the front was long, but I snaked them and went to a register in the back.  That could be controlled a bit better.  (In retail stores, why do clerks need to discuss every single item with the customer....Hello...just get me out of here....lol)

    this place is so easy!

I was waiting for certain pillows to go on sale...went in the store and NO WHERE TO BE FOUND.

buuuuut if you ask the staff that are more than accommodating to find it.  the amazing sales guy (chris?) was so sweet.  Held my pillows until the next day when I came back with my gift card.  Location always packed with tourists but again has fantastic customer service.

Mostly typical large C&B store, BUT this location now has an entire Marimekko section.  I had to restrain myself from not spending hundreds on the various awesome colorful items!

I'm deducting a star for rather poor customer service -- having to hunt down a salesperson and then having the person incorrectly overcharge me for my purchase.

This is my favorite Crate and Barrel in the city.  I can't explain why except that it's the one I frequent the most out of the others.  The first floor is always busy (i sometimes wonder if people actually stand outside waiting for the doors to open) because there is ALWAYS people there.  Over the years, I've grown to like Crate and Barrel's colorful, multi-use, simple products and their great customer service.  They are always pleasant, always willing to help, and they never pressure you too much.  Of course, this may be because I'm that annoying customer who can never figure out what he really wants.

But have no fear! The staff will point you in the right direction, and I've ALWAYS left the store satisfied without buyer's remorse.  And that's a very good thing.

Mmmm like this location because it's close to the subway stop that goes to my home.

First floor is all table top, kitchen stuff and the second floor is your bigger things like furniture.

I found what  I needed and was promptly checked out by a friendly sales associate.

I didn't find the store crowded at all when I went...but that could have been an off day?

In general I'd give this 3.75 staaaaars.

Yet, I'd have to agree with Michael J. on this...something seems a little off here. I recently relocated to NY and needed to purchase all new furniture, glasses, silverware, cutting board, etc. I used their house warming registry (you didn't even know they had one of those right?) and found that it was very easy to update, edit and add items to.

Kimani helped me with my couch purchase and was VERY nice, helpful and gave all around 5 staaaaar service. Too bad the couch was one inch too big to fit in the elevator and was sent back. Later in the evening I received a call from Kathy in customer service and was able to reorder the smaller version and schedule delivery for the day I wanted. (awaiting delivery and will update). So far so good....

I like to cook and enjoy using a good knife, so obviously my next purchase was a set of knives. If you've ever used a registry you know that what ever isn't purchased is offered to you at usually 10-20% off for the next year. I'm impatient and wanted to use my 10% that day. I've purchased tons of stuff from C&B (plates, wine glasses, silverware, house decorations, you get the point). I wanted knives and wanted them ASAP! I also had a 25% off bloomies friends and family coupon that I could have used but didn't want to walk over a few blocks and use it...I was already in C&B.

I picked out my knives and the cashier brought them to the register, put them in a bag and even put one of those nice handles on the bag. I let her know that I wanted to use my 10% off. She informed me of their "policy" on registry roughly 4.5 times and during the 5th time I responded with "I understand your "policy" but if I'm not getting my 10%, I'm not going to purchase anything else here." Remember I had a 25% off for bloomies which has the same knives. At this point she removed the knives from the bag, put them on the back shelf and left to assist another customer.

An assistant manager helped me with my purchase and let me know that if I was going to use my 10% off that I would not get 10% off on other purchases. I let him know that I wouldn't be purchasing anything else if that was the case and left with my knives.

I get your policy...no really I do. From a business standpoint it doesn't make much sense to strictly enforce it if it means losing future business. It's a little annoying to spend about a month or so picking out stuff that you want in your home and then feeling like you should probably go somewhere else to then purchase it. I might buy some more things from C&B but I'll probably hate myself a little for it each time.
