After all these all-over-the-place reviews, was a real surprise to find a place where the reviews are pretty uniformly good...and for simple food, too

    Gourmet Grilled Cheese seems to be growing in popularity lately, and I'm not complaining as long as they're all as good as this newest place, which has some of the most unique and delicious creations of them all.

    A major bonus at this place over a lot of the other specialty joints is that there a ton of other great menu options. As an example, here is what we feasted on:

    - Creamy Tomato Soup ($5)
    This always goes well with Grilled Cheese, so I figured we should try it. It was delicious, and the somehow still crunchy NY Cheddar Crouton on top added a unique spin on it.

    - Sweet Potato Pancakes ($8 for 3)
    These were great. Very non-kosher with some tasty bits of Andouille Sausage on top, but I wasn't complaining at all, as it wen't very well together. The cheese of course also added to the delicious non-kosherness of it.

    - Sweet Po'Tater Tot with Apple Mustard ($6 for 7)
    The waitress reassured me that even though I was ordering more sweet potatoes, these were very different from the pancakes, and she was right, and I was glad I got these also. This consisted of seven giant tater tots, which were nice and crispy on the outside, and very soft on the inside. They were excellent when dipped in the tasty apple mustard.

    - Sunday Supper Sandwich ($12)
    This was a really great sandwich. Made with pork and beef bolognese along with ricotta and mozzarella on Pullman bread, it was a delicious combination of meaty and cheesy. The bread was crispy and hot and the cheese was melty. Very satisfying.

    - Chicken & Waffles Sandwich ($12)
    This was the real winner of the meal - a thick, juicy piece of crispy fried chicken, with buttermilk waffles as the bread. There was also some melted pepperjack cheese holding it all together. The sandwich had a pretty sweet taste overall, I think mostly from the waffles, but also from the Vermont maple syrup. There are a ton of other great options on the menu too, but I would highly recommend trying this one for a really satisfying, huge sandwich.

    The sandwiches are all served with fingerling potatoes and a house made pickle spear. I'd already eaten a silly amount of potatoes though, so I mostly skipped those. I wish they would just serve the sandwiches with those great tots instead.

    Lastly, we obviously needed some dessert, so we opted for the Cake In A Jar (I need to go back to get the Ice Cream Sandwich next time, which consists of Van Leeuwen Pistachio Ice Cream between housemade lemon cookies) ($6 each). The cake was super rich and fudgy, and was an excellent end to a satisfying meal.

    The atmosphere in here is very nice. At night, they have candles out on all of the tables, which makes for a very nice, low-lit ambiance. The service is efficient and friendly and complements the excellent food to make for a very enjoyable and memorable meal.

    This place is in an unfortunate location and seems out of place and too good for this neighborhood - among the several sports bars and low quality B-grade sushi and Thai restaurants is this hidden gem that will hopefully stick around since they have a ton of delicious sandwich options that I would love to come back and try.

    Yummy!  I read about this place in Time Out and had to try it! It's a fresh different type of place for an area that is frequently crowded by an after work gang and bridge and tunnel.

    The tomato soup was creamy and delicious. They have some other treats like the sweet potato pancakes too. I had the kale and mushroom grilled cheese sandwich and loved it. The side of fingerling potatoes also was a new touch not seen often in meals. My dinner partner had a Mexican whole wheat wrap with chorizo etc that he seemed to lack flavor. I had tried the cake in a jar that could have been avoided as it seemed like Betty Crocker in a cup.

    Needs slight improvement but worth trying.

    The Pullman Kitchen is a great addition to the various dining options along 2nd Avenue in the 50's. I walked by for lunch and saw a blackboard that read gourmet grilled cheese. This sounded like a great idea and thought I hope they do takeout. Well they don't unfortunately, but you can sit at the bar area if dining by yourself. There's several beers on tap, so here's your afterwork spot if you want a low key night, maybe also for a date, and forgo the sports bar scene.

    Luckily I got a table with my guest, so next time I know. Table seating here is good trample space between each row. There's a pretty good deal here for half a sandwich and the creamy tomato soup for $7.95 but the catch is that it only applies to the Pullman Classic. No where on the menu does it state that. I only found out after I asked about it whether all sandwiches were part of the combo.

    I went with the Chicken & Waffles which has buttermilk fried chicken, cornbread waffles, pepper jack cheese, and Vermont maple. I didn't find that the chicken was fried at all, but maybe it's because it lost the crispiness during the sandwich assembly. Oh well. Despite that fact, this sandwich is a very nice creation. The cornbread waffles had a nice crust and were just the right thickness. Inside, the buttermilk chicken breast was enveloped by the gooey pepper jack cheese slathered all over. With each bite, you taste that the cheese is so melty and insanely delicious when taken in a big bite with the chicken and waffle piece. The Vermont maple syrup adds the perfect amount sweetness. Me personally, I could use a small sauce cup of syrup so I can dip as much as I'd like.

    On the side you get a pile of fingerling potatoes that are well seasoned, skin on. Then there's also a home made pickle spear on your plate too to munch on. The desserts here look pretty amazing, going to return and dive in for sure.

    Yummmm!

    The tomato soup was nice and thick and creamy. I had the beer-braised oxtail on sourdough, which was extremely flavorful. The bf really liked his Pullman classic.

    Our second time around, I was highly disappointed by the chicken and waffles. The waffle was dry and the chicken was not at all crispy. The bf liked his lobster sandwich though, and it did look delicious.

    All sandwiches come with a side of home fries and a deliciously spicy pickle.

    Rustic setting, friendly service, great food. The only downside is that the bathrooms are rather annoying to access - down some steep, narrow stairs.

    We'll definitely be back to explore more.

    Such a wonderful surprise for Midtown!  Gourmet grilled cheese and beer.

    I'd expect to find a place like this in Williamsburg or East Village.  The decor is warm and woody, yet bright and happy.  The servers have beaming smiles, the window faces bustling second ave.  And now for the food....I had the cornbread waffle and fried chicken sandwich.  Yes, it's as delicious as it sounds. The waffle was moist yet crunchy, the chicken was fresh and perfectly fried.  My friend had the oxtail (which I was lucky enough to sample).  Very flavorful and tender.  I definitely know what I'm getting next time!

    After many good times at the neigboring Stag's Head, was excited to try out its new sister restaurant.  It was great.

    We had the grilled cheese with bacon and the chicken and waffels (obviously had to try that).  Both were excellent.  Drinks and craft beer selection were also very good.  And the pickels were really good too.  Very excited to come back again.

    This place is a great new spot in midtown east with a wonderful/unique menu -- something the neighborhood was definitely lacking in terms of offering up a new style and menu in an area of the city where there is not nearly enough food diversity.

    Ohhhkay I have never gotten this excited over a midtown menu like I have here. Pullman Kitchen screams electric joy on a plate. I know, I know this sounds a bit extreme for  grilled cheese and Kale salads and beignets  but TRUST ME! Pullman Kitchen is extreme sport quality deliciousness on every level. Came here last night to try the new place in my neighborhood and was not smitten - I was blown away! Am back tonight & will return tomorrow. The Mad Scientist beer is the beer equivalent of raw milk cheese joy. The kale & farro salad in brown butter maple vinaigrette is exceptional. The oxtail grilled cheese had gravitas beyond  imagination. The cheddar grilled cheese was magical. Pullman is extreme sport deliciousness! You need to come & enjoy all its joy!

    We came across this restaurant while we were looking for somewhere quick and casual to eat and this place fit the bill perfectly.

    The food was AMAZING. For a starter I had the pickles. They were very good, though that was a LOT of pickles to eat (we shared between 3 and it was still a lot). I had the Apple A Day grilled cheese and it was the perfect texture. The bread was fresh, the cheese was savory. It was a bit greasy, but it tasted so good I didn't care. I struggled to finish it, even though it was just the size of a typical grilled cheese, because it was so filling. The fingerling potatoes were roasted perfectly. Another pickle, this one was SPICY but great tasting.

    The service was very attentive, they ran out of water glasses and our waitress was so  apologetic. Eventually we got our water, and then our beer. They had a great selection of beers and the waitress was great at giving suggestions.

    The one thing that's odd about this restaurant is that the kitchen is right in the middle. We sat in the  back, so we had to get through the window area. There was staff standing around waiting for their orders to come up, and it made a bottleneck. Also, the bathrooms are down a VERY steep staircase and they are REALLY out of date and old. I really hope it isn't true that a restaurant's kitchen should be judged by their bathrooms, because that would be disappointing at a place like The Pullman Kitchen.

    The prices were good for the area, the beers were $7-8, the starters were $6, the grilled cheeses were between $9-12. I will definitely return next time I'm in town.
