Laytner's for the Home

Scaffolding on East 86th Street does not obscure fact this is an inviting looking place

Gets good reviews..people disagree about selection but it is obviously not a really big store

One or two cranky people post their dissents too

Their selection is limited, but if you're just looking for some basic linens or housewares, you should be able to find it here. I got a bunch of basics here for my apartment - dish rack, towels, trash cans, dish cleaning brush, and some other little knick-knacks.

It never hurts to come in and browse the clientele too. Always an interesting mix of locals. I had a fortune teller offer me love life advice while I was shopping for a bath mat one time. I guess the green I was looking at exposed me for the sad, single woman I am. Sigh.

If Bed, Bath & Beyond makes you cranky, you'll like Laytner's. It's a mid-size, well-edited housewares and linens store. You can't find everything here, but what's here is good-quality, attractively presented, and generally well priced. Their sales and specials can save you a bundle--wait for them if you can.

The staff is surprisingly helpful. At first, I thought the sales lady was ignoring me as I rummaged through pillows, but it turned out she was giving me some space, waiting until I was nearing a choice to offer advice and assistance. Old-school professional. I could get used to this.

And do take advantage of that advice. If you want to talk for half and hour about mattress covers (like the dowager across from me), they will do that without  a hint of impatience. I myself learned a lot about how and when to launder pillows, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't for half and hour, and I'm pretty sure I can't yet be classified as a dowager.

Huge selection of linens and a great assortment of all things holidays. They also have some pretty cool furniture. Staff leave you alone unless you ask for help. They also have pretty good sales here, especially around the holidays.

Flagship store (and first, I think, of a number of stores) is on Broadway in the 80's.

Owned by a very nice family, too.

Limited selection, but good local option when you don't want to trek to Target or Bed & Bath. Had a great deal on "nap blankets" when they were at the height of popularity. Staff isn't very welcoming

Good quality housewares, linens and tableware, furniture, picture frames, candles.  Good place to come for house gifts.

Really nice housewares (but not much kitchen stuff), particularly strong on bathroom stuff (shower curtains, rugs, etc).  Also curtains, bedroom stuff, random housewarming gifts and gadgets.   Some furniture.  Regular prices a bit too high, but look for the sales.  Sometimes you can get good deals when they're blowing things out (I got a duvet cover for $9.99 and have occasionally seen their limited sofa selection really marked down).  For sheets and such, you might want to compare at the nearby Filene's basement to make sure there's not a better deal there.

This store has a nice selection of housewares, bedding, bathroom rugs, shower curtains, seasonal stuff. Kind of like a mini Bed Bath & Beyond. Sometimes you can find just what you want, sometimes not, but usually has some good sales going on. Super nice staff. Easy to get to on 86th street rather then schlepping downtown if on the UES.

It's not Bed Bath and Beyond...which is good, agreed? It's a lot more accessible, organized and edited for better items. The prices can be beat elsewhere but if you're in the neighborhood it's worth popping in for a look.

I like Laytner's, but I feel like it's more of a hit or miss store. It doesn't have a huge selection or anything, but the prices are cheap and you can score some really cool stuff and good deals there.

I LOVE going into Laytner's. I can usually find what I am seeking. The staff is always friendly and patient. They might be a bit understaffed, but the folks there are polite and helpful. Some things are on the expensive side, but the quality is good.

I love going into Laytner's, I love that they always have new stuff to look at. They also have nice sales and staff. Laytner's even smells especially nice (the scented candles). I have bought a major piece of furniture from them to discount sheets. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is that some of the bargain sheets weren't exactly bargains (they were cheap sheets at a cheap price). But I have gotten some pretty good bargains here too. Always a pleasure to stop by and browse, and when I'm nearby-I always do. Better than the big box stores in many ways.

Although the selections are limited I found that the salesperson was extremely helpful. The store is clean and well organized. Prices are fair. I had to return an item and found the experience to be both friendly and professional.

I like this place.  It had most everything for the kitchen, bed, and bath, and the prices were reasonable.  I'd shop here again.
