Manhattan, NYWent here today after renovations. Nice look to it and attempts at organization are apparent, but I still like the color coordination of other stores (i am comparing to Goodwill on 6th ave and 26th(?)). Dresses are with dresses and pants with pants, but within these groups seems chaotic - could it be because of the slew of customers on Saturday? I don't know, but would be nice to have color groupings. Maybe I'm picky.
This particular store should be renamed Ann Taylor or H&M because a majority of items in the women's section were from these brands. Many new Ann Taylor dresses were going for about $29-$39. Some of these looked like sample dresses. Many size 4 and 6s, but unfortunately none in my size (size 0s or 2s must got fast here). What I thought was weird was that there were MANY items LABELED "SAMPLE" with marker across very noticeable areas on the clothing. Why would anyone pay goodwill full price for these...or better question yet, does Goodwill really think these are going to sell at those prices? I am so confused as to why these are even on the floor.
The jeans were plentiful and they also had some designer ones, but these were priced much higher than other goodwills in the city. I have found 7 for all mankind jeans in gramercy and over again on 6th ave (my favorite goodwill so far if you can't tell) for 9.99, but they were going for 19.99 at this particular location. Still a good deal, but I don't know who does these pricing evaluations - the ones for 19.99 were well used and the ones at other places were like brand new.
The shoe selection is great if you're a size 8 or 10 (at least today); Not a thing for size 6s. The brands I saw we're Nine West, cole haan, Jessica Simpson. The nicer brands apparently take up window space only. By the way, the window items were great here! I spied a Louis vuitton purse, kooba bag, Prada flats and coach shoes. I wish I knew more about how and when these can be purchased. Would be nice to have access to them, try them on or check prices. Oh well - I guess it's not meant to be.
Not much furniture upstairs or household items either. Lots of kids clothes though! Men's section is also located upstairs.
Overall, if in the neighborhood I would check back again. I ended up buying a Bebe dress and a H&M cardigan for Goodwill full price (I.e. $12.99 for dress and $7.99 for sweaters), but I wouldn't say I scored. I definitely had much more success at other Goodwill stores in the city. Still maybe it was just not a good day for thrifting for me today. A girl behind me in line bought an armful of items she could barely carry, so I don't know. -

I can always find a lil something here. Sometimes, it's slim pickins, but I got a mint condition J.Crew peacoat for $20. You can also find designer jeans like Citizens and Sevens are around $15. Goodwills in Cali charge 3x the amount, which doesn't sit right with me.
I always see well dressed young people drag bins of stuff for donation.
There are TONS of DVDs and CDs... I never have enough time or patience to go through them all but I wish I did!
Once, I was in the elevator of my old apartment with my big Goodwill shopping bag. It is a bit embarrassing, almost as embarrassing as "I just found a great deal at Filene's Basement," but the gentleman in the same elevator congratulated me on finding some choice finds at Goodwill. He was in the know. I asked if he had other secret thrift shop recs... He said Murray Hill was pretty good, but I never had a chance to check that one out. :) -

Seems like a nice place for second-hand goods, and they make drop-off very convenient. When I have stuff that I no longer need or want, but are still of good use, I bring them to Goodwill. They're currently renovating the retail space, but are still accepting donations. I got to peek inside at the new space - lookin good! -

Manhattan, NYI had good luck here. I actually had never been as a shopper, but in an attack of feng shui, I cleaned out 8 bags worth of clothing, handbags, etc. from my closet and came to drop them off. Couldn't resist a browse while there and I found 2 amazing pairs of dressy shoes that were obviously not worn more than once, if at all, that were $25 (but originally near $200). Bought them for my cruise and they are all anyone talked about. Smiled to myself when questioned where I got them.
Another closet cleaning happening this weekend for me and I'll probably drop my stuff off on Saturday. Don't know how soon they will sort and place on racks, but I did used to work at Banana and Barneys back in the day, so who knows what I'll wind up donating (some M and L's and some 10s and 12s, fyi). Nothing special trip worthy, I don't think, but if you're in 'hood soon, try your luck! -

This is my spot. Favorite second hand store in nyc. You have to have patience and perseverence to succeed in this goodwill (and maybe some hand sanitizer for when you are done), but if you keep coming back you will find awesome stuff. Some of my favorite finds here:

The window display of designer bags is usually well-stocked, but you cant just waltz in and buy one out of the display. They price them and have first come first served sales from time to time. It's not super cheap, but still major scores. -

Manhattan, NYThere are many thrift stores on the Upper East Side and this Goodwill has hands down the best clothing selection. Not super cheap (H&M still can beat their prices like $2 for a tank top) but still very good. Steve Madden shoes, CK jeans, all the brands are there- you just have to look. -

Manhattan, NYI have to say, I was pretty unimpressed by this Goodwill. For some reason, their standard prices are a couple of dollars or so higher than most of the other Goodwill stores in the city. Taking advantage of the high-income neighborhood?
Now, while $7.99 might be a good price for SOME used shirts, it's really not a good price for a used H&M tank top that's ripped AND stained. And that was pretty par for the course for most of the merchandise when I was there - not a good selection.
The "designer" selection (pricier items) wasn't that impressive either - and not really "designer" either, unless you're counting mall chain brands as designer. I thought everything was priced too high for what it was.
I did get a couple of paperbacks for a buck each, and I'd be willing to go back... 'cause there's always the chance of finding something great... -

Manhattan, NYI made my first trip to this Goodwill last Saturday. I have to admit, it was extremely exciting when the first few things I picked up were Helmut Lang, rag & bone, and Bottega Veneta. Someone had picked out all of the amazing things and hung them right in front of me. It was a shopping miracle. I will definitely be going back tomorrow morning. -

Went back for a second time, couldn't resist. I had more time to really look through rack after rack of clothing and I definitely found some gems in there.
I found: - a Dolce & Gabbana blouse, a like new cream colored Burberry dress ($12.99), a bunch of J Brand jeans ($19.99- they retail for $200+), Joes Jeans, Citizens of Humanity jeans, basically all the jeans for sale were designer. Also found a Diane Von Furstenburg blazer, and a dress... and an Alice + Olivia dress that I ended up buying ($12.99, retails for $400+).
Ladies, you can most definitely find high end designer clothing there that is in great condition and for like 1/8 of the price.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Boston, MAShopping at Goodwill is always fun as you never know what you will find. I came in looking to find some cheap deals on a navy Blazer, and specifically Brooks Brothers shirts/ties.
Didn't find any of my size in Brooks Brothers (they did have a handful of dress shirts).
Ended up getting a brand new pink tie (still in packaging, not a name brand but o well), and a $15 Navy Blue Blazer that fits me well. -

I, on the other hand, love everything "sterile," including: thoughts, hospitals, my apartment, etc.
I decided to humor her this past weekend and explore something outside of my comfort zone. It was surely entertaining.
She wound up scoring a flower embroidered belt, a beige purse (not a pocketbook, because there is a difference), a book, and a necklace made of turquoise stones. She was glowing because she "only" spent $15. I was cringing because she spent $15.
The help at this particular Goodwill left much to be desired, but I empathise because of the nature of the job (or because my Mom told me to not be so apathetic all the time).
On this particular afternoon the customers and employees were the cast of one of the most hilarious comedies that I have ever witnessed. Certain customers ran around all three levels of the store screaming their heads off in garb that had not been purchased, but was being tested. The staff ignored the general appearance of the store and the goings on within its walls. I finally had to take a seat on a $30 steel filing cabinet and drink in the experience. The set was minimal with fitting rooms constructed to look like outhouses and layers of dust covering stereo and workout equipment alike. The exposed duct work and filters on each floor is the aesthetic that Urban Outfitters only dreams it could accomplish. Don't go upstairs to the discount/men's section for more than 2 minutes at a time because you could pass out in the heat that rivals hell.
Not all prices are reasonable here. A shirt marked $17 dollars isn't exactly a screaming buy to me, considering I could go to the Gap for a new shirt for $10.
She was happy as a pig in sh!t. I felt like I was bathing in sh!t. I guess that is the reason we work. -

Brooklyn, NYI'm honestly nervous about saying too much about how fantastic this particular Goodwill is. The prices are a little higher than most, with dresses starting at $12.00, even for Old Navy, H&M, and other kinda cheepie clothes. BUT, if you are in the mood to hunt for fashion, and you are on a budget, its hard not to find must-haves the 2nd ave. location. It seems to me there are people who donate to this particular location with a pretty good sense of fashion, or maybe those people who buy something and it sits in their closet forever but hardly wear it. I've seen some awesome designer stuff.
For instance. I was there today, and discovered the second floor - the "mens, kids, and housewares" floor. I came across racks and racks labeled "Men's Jeans $9.99" but low and behold they were full of women's jeans! 7 of all mankind, earnest sewn, levis, free people, james, citizen of humanity - impressive variety. There was a sale going on so I walked out with 2 darling dresses and an unused complete picnic basket with matching dishes set for $30 total. Tried on 2 pairs of adorable cowboy boots for $25 a pair, lots of other cute shoes. Ok, that's all I'm going to say. You gotta experience it and find out for yourself, and save some good stuff for me!
Credit cards are accepted, bag check at the door, nice people working, dressing rooms, pretty organized, and clean. A win. -

New York, NYSHOPPING ALERT:
Why go to Beacon's where you pay $30 for a used H&M dress? Goodwill in the UES is just as good, if not better. Their window displays put most retailers to shame. The brilliance is most Upper East Siders clean their closets out quarterly and donate lightly used/new merchandise. I have gotten some of the most amazing finds here for absolutely nothing. They also have an amazing book collection, for all you non-fashionistas. -

El Paso, TXA dream of a Goodwill! I have gotten everything here from a blow dryer, new in the box, to an iron, Express editor pants, and an Igloo cooler - all new! This place is a lifesaver for a bargain hunter. I suggest you go often, early, and be nice to the staff. They are awesome for the amounts of pure crap they sort through for us.
Of course, a great place with a great mission for your donations. -

I really liked browsing amongst the many possibilities. I was happy to find an Italian blazer that fits like no other blazer! For 12.99! I saw these maroon pants from lands end that I desperately wanted. However it was a size 8 in pants. So that was just a dream. So with surprises will be disappointments!
I didn't find too many disappointments though! I also found a pair of killer horse riding inspired leggings! They were so perfect for 5.99!
There is always a chance when you go to goodwill, just keep an open mind and look.. You just might find something fantastic! -

If you are a lover of the thrift store (which I am), and in possession of a discerning eye, this shop warrants a visit. Fueled by the nearby Two Red Hens' great coffee and baked goods, I hit this this shop ready to do some damage! Unfortunately, I was here at the tail end of seven days in Manhattan hemorrhaging cash. So, while I was ready to clean up, my wallet was not. (Sniffle...) My anticipation that it would yield some treasures owing to its location in the UES was an accurate one.
The dress section has some real prizes. Unless otherwise marked, dresses are $12.99. For the H&M, Forever 21, and Old Navy end of the spectrum, that's no great deal. However, I did find a really nice (completely new) Ann Taylor Loft wrap dress and a lovely Rebecca Taylor dress in that category. I discovered a lot of other great offerings in the excellent dress area, but the funding was not to be found!
In jackets, I found a really nice checkered number with three quarter sleeves. Similar to the dresses, the unmarked ones are $12.99.
Shoes were very promising, but the ones I could afford didn't fit me. Ditto for pants. This says a little more about my figure than their generous selection. My friend promised me that their hand bag selection was good. I just needed to tap out, lest hooking or panhandling become necessary in order to eat during the remainder of the trip.
The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. (Remarkably so, on the day that I went.) It's a little bit dusty and disorganized, but that adds to the thrill of the hunt! -

This is hands down the best thrift store I've been to. At first glance, it looks like your run-of-the-mill dingy Goodwill or Salvation Army, but their selection is amazing. I have never seen more practically new, brand name clothing at a place like this. Their dress section was particularly impressive-- I'm guessing this is where rich UES socialites drop off their dresses after wearing them out once.
Usually, when I go thrifting, I end up buying things that are so-so, but I convince myself that I'll find a way to make them work (and rarely do). Here, though, most of the things I got would be things I would have pulled from the rack if I were shopping at Express, BCBG, etc. I ended up buying 3 dresses, 3 skirts, and a hand bag, most of which were name brands. I didn't delve into the shirts and shoe sections, but it also seemed like they had great stuff there.
The prices were a bit higher than at some other thrift shops, but were still completely reasonable. They basically have a flat rate for each type of clothing item, which sometimes works against you, but is usually an excellent deal.
The only slight downsides are that there didn't seem to be many true vintage items and most of the clothing seemed to be in small sizes (00-6).Listed in: UES for the Rest of Us
