Cinemas 1,2,3,

This little movie house would SEEM to have a fantastic location in East Midtown, but with all the movie house closings that have happened or are threatened, I have a feeling the landlord here may be looking for something that would bring in more money..

This is because Yelp'ers say place is OK but not all that well maintained considering where it is..(not horrible, certainly...remember one place near Union Square that looks so posh and modern got complaints of being not clean enough and bug bites!)

Anyway

This theater certainly isn't state of the art nor all shiny and new but it does have a few things going for it.

It's location is very convenient to the N,Q,R, in fact an entrance is literally right outside the door making it convenient for those living in Queens (no names mentioned)

It's a bit less visited than say the Chelsea Cinema or the Theater on Houston Street but its non special event movies are often the same, so if you wish to be around smaller quantities of potentially chatty asshats err patrons this gives you a better chance of avoiding them.

Not the prettiest place in the world but at off-peak hours it'll do the trick.

i mean i guess its acceptable for a small theater like this but really with better management i think this place could have much higher standards. Considering its locationnit has nothing to do with any other establishment on the UES. Its pretty dirty, bad service and carpets that have a "vintage" odor.

It gets 1 star for starting the movie on time.

While it's quite possible that the non-big-business, non-eighteen-screens-monstrosity quirky nature of these smaller cinemas lends itself to a unique experience, such uniqueness is not necessarily always a good thing.  In this case, the feel is rather run down and ragged. Keeping an old-school charm does not mean you are required to keep the place...old.

Furthermore, the last time I came here I had to keep my lovely worth-the-sacrifice-of-three-months-of-Cup O' Noodles purse (See, e.g., ROTD 7/11/07) on my lap (not the most comfortable position) as my companion sighted a mouse-rat skittering at our feet early in the show. Not quite the most reassuring thing to hear when one is wearing flip flops and leaving one's Cup O' Noodles-worthy purse on the floor amidst who-knows-what of human or mouse-rat origin.

    Mmm...mouse-rats.

    Yummy.

It may not be the best cinema in the Big Apple, but I can appreciate the fact that this particular theater hosts many pre-release screenings throughout the year.  Case in point: "Becoming Jane" just last night.  Despite the 2-hour wait in line behind the "Special Invitations Only" sign, I was jolly as hell to be at this theater to enjoy a movie I'd been excited about 5 days before it came out in theaters.... FOR FREE!

The screen was smaller than your average Loews or AMC, but it certainly served its purpose well.  I didn't mind the seats either.   Yeah, they weren't the most comfortable in the world, but, hey, you don't go to the movie theater to nap.

Lastly, I like its location in the UES.  It's on the same block as one of the subway exits (59th and Lex) and near lots of shopping (e.g. Bloomy's) and various dining locations.
    Was this review …?
