always great food at Todaro's - if you like the gourmet store vibe and high quality, some hard to get, products, then this is where to shop -they have great everything, and that says it all. -

For those of us living in the Hill of Murray and Bay of Kips Todaro is a great market for fresh fruits, veggies, cheeses, breads and meats. The staff is alway helpful and very knowledgeable, and their prices are completely reasonable.
If you're into cheese they have a solid collection alongside artisanal breads and deli meats..oh, and the veggies always look good(how that's possible, I have no idea). Oh, they even have non-dairy cheese for those of us who are sensitive to the lactose.
Todaro's the perfect little market, a little gem. -

It's a specialty store where they have a deli,all types of desserts and coffees and some seafood . I have come here a few times and i must say the staff here aren't very friendly and i was not to happy with there service . i really enjoy there Italian tun which has sliced eggs,onions.I ordered a sandwich for my boss and all i was changing was it had mustard and he wanted mayo so the guy said there is a 1 dollar charge really a 1 extra to just add mayo i'm sorry i think that crazy . so i said that's crazy but i take it so he turned around and said well you don't have to buy it which i thought was very rude and the whole time making the sandwich he was mumbling under his breath and slamming stuff which is so damn rude . i wasn't just disgusted with his attitude like if i bothered him because i asked for a sandwich last time i checked you work in the deli selection and are supposed to make sandwiches .so i wont be returning for a while there are just a few that work here that are friendly. Some items are over priced now i mite just take a walk across the street to Fair way -

This is a pretty solid Italian specialty store and upscale grocer, for when you're in the mood, particularly for this part of town. Their deli counter is fairly standard, and the cheese counter has a nice offering. They also have a prepared food and salad counter, where you can find anything from grilled salmon or chicken, to roasted eggplant, to broccoli rabe, to macaroni or bean salad, to various pasta dishes, and desserts. They do sandwiches as well, but they are premade and packaged, not made to order. This inherently bums me out a bit, but I do get the sense that they are made fresh, as they have always tasted that way and I've never had a bad experience. Cured meats, turkey, ham, veggie...they have all kinds of options, on many different types of breads and rolls. They're not the cheapest, but this isn't exactly Subway, either.
Aside from all this, they also operate as a small grocery store, so you can find any number of things that you might need. The produce always looks good to me, and from the little I've noticed, the prices are fair. I don't know that I'd do the bulk of my shopping here, but when you're in a pinch or just need a couple items, it seems like an appropriate place. Overall, I like this place and come from time to time. It's definitely a nice option to have in the area when you want something other than the underwhelming offerings so common to the neighborhood. -

As I enter my eighth year of residence in this character-free afterthought of a neighborhood, I often have to ask myself, "Hani, why bother? Surely, you can afford an equally small place in a slightly more interesting part of the city. Sure, you won't be as close to the east side, or a Border's, or a Fifteen Screen Movie Theatre, or Todaro Bros. Well . . . wait, I can't quite leave Todaro Bros., can I?"
And, of course, by this point in the conversation I'll have already subconsciously made my way to this Kips Bay original to salivate over the selection of fine cheeses and marinated chops.
Todaro is maybe an Eight the size of Gourmanderies like Fairway and Zabars, but it packs one potent vestpocket punch with its homemade pastas, artisanal cheeses, organic beef, and fresh seafood. The makings of a gourmet masterpiece are all right at your fingertips, even if you may have to resort to the Food Emporium or Gristede's to get your hands on the basics. And even if, by the end of the day, you're still wondering just what the hell you're still doing in the East 30's, at least you can rest assured this neighborhood has at least one worthwhile thing no one else in Manhattan has.Listed in: Reasons why Murray Hill… -

Such a great supermarket. The prices are comparable to the Gristede's two blocks away (the DeCecco pasta is cheaper here) and the food is so much better.
They have a great selection of meats and cheeses and the guys behind the counter know what they are talking about. I love that you can get loose mesculin greens and fresh quiches to make a quick meal. If you have a sweet tooth, don't forget to try the chocolate covered macaroons or the chocolate chip cookies - to die for. -

When looking for some good Italian food related items, Todaro's has just about everything. They have great selection of fresh veggies, cheeses, meats and seafood. All of the items they sell are related to Italian recipes. The meat section looks awesomely delicious with a wide variety of cured and processed cuts. Pancetta, prosciutto and so on, they have it. Aside from that they have all sorts of spices needed for most Italian delicacies. Oh, by the way, they have a nice selection of breads as well. Unfortunately for some of us who like these baked goods, their most special ones run out pretty quick leaving some of the bins empty. Sigh.. i like my bread, hmm some nice butter on that warm tasty goodness... ahem! sorry for the tangent...
Besides that they have some prepared meals. These i have to say, event though they are pretty fresh, they are hit or miss. The problem i have with some of them is the flavor. I know current society is very wary about health aspects of their diets, but that is not an excuse for killing an otherwise perfect dish by making it bland.
The space for this market is not that big... id say its a bit bigger than your standard bodega... not much more. Being small doesn't mean much against it, as they are always very well stocked. So, those of you with the Italian tooth... give it a try.

Why's everybody hate on Murray Hill, huh?? I mean, I get last year's all negativo recession style attitude and I totally agree: 2009 was lame. With a capital L. But it's 2010 people! It's already been a better year than last! How about we muster up some of those positive thoughts that have been hiding away and come to terms with this little hood.
Try, for instance, to find anything negative about the oatmeal at Todaro. It's 1.50 (who says this hood is expensive?!) and filled with cinnamon and fresh fruit. It was seriously the best oatmeal I've had. Todaro is a small store, but there are many more gems besides the oatmeal like delicious salads, freshly made hummus and specialty items (kelp caviar anyone?). Some of the pricing is a little on the high side, but I feel like it's justified since it's undeniable that the quality is much better than any other market in the neighborhood. Ok, not enough of an argument to start wearing "I heart Murray Hill" tees, but it's a start!
