The Hurricane Steak and Sush- Flatiron

Looks like a trendy " Asian Fusion" place with mixed reviews

Reviews get better as you go along ( still all 2013, so we have real differences of point of diners to consider here)

I feel trendiness turns some people off

This place is beautiful. The minute you come in you are greeted by two really nice hostesses. I really loved the décor of this restaurant, I felt like I was transported to another place.
I didn't get to try their fun cocktails since I was in the mood for wine but they did look good and interesting.
I ordered the Hurricane Roll, Hawaiian fried rice and the scallops. All three were delicious but my favorite was the rice, it was too die for.
I will be coming here again.

The 1 star here is purely rated on the customer service provided by the host and larger party coordinator.

I had to call multiple times upon different instructions (first before noon, then after 3 pm, then after 5 pm) just to see if they could accommodate a group above 10. They agreed as long as it was a prix fix menu, which I said was fine.

The host on the phone was extremely curt and said i'd be receiving an email.

After finally receiving an email with sample menu, I requested 2 dishes swapped (food allergies).

Another 2 follow up emails and 2 calls later, I finally got a response, which totally ignored the request.

Another email later, we arrived at 2 alternate dishes. I asked for a confirmation that the reservation was actually set and confirmed (thanks to other Yelp reviews). No response.

2 calls later ("please call after 3," then, after 3, "sorry, she is already gone for the day and no one can help you.") I expressed discontent at just attempting to make the reservation. No service offered.

I then expressed I'll just make the reservation at another restaurant and got hung up on.

It's no surprise that others have written about and provided the same feedback, all actually very close in date (October, 2013) that all relate to the same issues. If I were management, I'd definitely make some rearrangements.

Given the competitive nature of the restaurant industry in New York, you come to appreciate so much more than just the food. You really do consider the little details that make going out to eat such a great experience.

I made the reservation on opentable for Hurricane. Upon having my whole party of four arrive, we were told that there were no tables ready to accomodate the group despite having made the reservation a day earlier. Instead, they put us in some corner of the lobby where it was loud and really was not conducive for my business dinner. The table was small and we consistently had to ask for the server (despite it being a bit slower and a Wednesday night) to come back and to take our order. The whole dining experience took a good 3 hours that should have been about half if we had the kind of attention that was promised to us despite not having the table we reserved.

needless to say, if you can look past all of that, the food was great and the wine that we ordered was amazing from their selection of wines. I was very impressed by the porterhouse that we shared as it was cooked perfectly. The veggies and some of the sushi was a bit bland and lacked the flavor i expected from paying as much as we did.

First off let me just start by saying this restaurant has Stellar decor and food/drink presentation. The selection of music played is also pretty good

Now here's the bad news, the staff who runs greeting/seating and all in between will totally ruin your experience upon arrival

If you're going to be pretentious the least I expect from you is to be professional and informative.  I arrived within the grace time of my reservation of 9 with more than half of the party. I know the whole protocol of dining on weekends because I work for a hospitality group.

We had to wait for the complete party before getting seated, when our party was complete the Maitre'D who clearly suffers from Napoleon complex informs me that being that we were "late" there was not a table available and he didn't know in how long a table will become available.. Say what ?? All this happen while giving me an attitude and being rude. Totally uncalled for

And yes the food makes up for it and our waiter was friendly but the experience was totally ruined and I will avoid this restaurant at all cost from now on

This place seemed to be the place to be on a Saturday night. It also seemed like there were more people waiting to be seated than there were actually seated. There is security by the door and by the bathrooms.  The host/hostess staff seemed flustered. We called for a reservation a few hours before we went and were told the earliest time was after 9:30 pm. We went online Opentable and found a reservation for 8:45 so we took it. We got there promptly at 8:45 an still ended up waiting for 45 minutes for our table.  There was another group that walked in the same time as us (without a reservation) and they waited about an hour and half for a table.  It was chaos!  Even if you have a reservation you have to wait.  However, I am happy to report, it was worth the wait to try the food.

For drinks, we had a Tahitian sangria, corona light, and the mandarin sweet tea. They were good, but a little over priced. $16 for a cocktail is a little pricy, but then again this is NYC. I opted to change to a class of white wine for my second drink.  The beer was $8 for a can of corona light (not even a bottle!).  They had this fun drink served out of a  small watermelon that looked great for sharing. However the price tag was $72 so we did not try it, but we saw many tables who did.

The pupu platter was a great way to sample the menu. They can accommodate the platter to fit the number of people. We had 3 at our table so we ordered the pupu platter for 3 (3 pieces of each appetizer). We had that as our "meal" and then ordered two sushi rolls as appetizers.  The sushi was fresh, we had thought there was going to be a larger offering of sushi, but were happy with what we tried.  The pupu platter was great, we loved the coconut shrimp and the PB&guava jelly + prosciutto mini sandwiches. What a unique flavor combination!

For dessert we opted for the Thai coffee ice cream with chocolate crunchies and caramel bark. It was yummy. Also had espresso and cappuccino.

This is more about the experience and ambiance than it is about the service. The food made up for the long wait and we ended up having a great time.

I really loved this place, one of the things I wanted to do was have a great girls night with a fun show and a good dinner and this hit the spot. Drinks were yummy, food was great, and service was amazing.

The only dower was the annoying group next to us and I won't blame the resturant for that :).

Certianly it's not the best thing ever but it's worth checking out on a fun night out.

There is nothing more fulfilling than scoring a reservation within less than 30 minutes of dinner time at one of New York's most sleek, lavish, and stylish restaurants in Midtown East. My first time around at the Hurricane Club, I was impressed by the gargantuan tiger prawns and hospitable service by the staff. My trip here also occurred during lunch, so I was looking forward to dinner and what exactly was in store.

Upon my second venture, the quality of service was nothing but immaculate similar to my first visit. The attentiveness of the hostess, the ability for her to modify dishes to cater to my party,  and care that can be seen placed into every meal that was served was overly exquisite.

THE GOOD: Tall, strong drinks full of whiskey, lime and other delectable ingredients that you can't say no to. Tuna tartare drizzled with mustard that was very fresh and scrumptious.

THE BAD: You might want to make a reservation because by 9 pm (mine was booked for 7:30), this place was packed. All walk-ins definitely had to wait.

THE UGLY: Having another tall whiskey tiki drink to wash down a chocolate crumb, topped with caramel and hazelnut mousse dessert with gluttonous delight. WINNING!!!!!

Feeling fancy for an evening out or looking to impress the Madame/Sir for a special night, The Hurricane Club is sure to not disappoint.

Unbelievable APPALLING incompetency managing reservations.  Worst I have ever seen in my life, let alone in NYC. For real. Wish I checked Yelp first. JUST DON'T GO HERE!!

We (three attractive young professionals) had a 10pm dinner reso for Sat. It took us 10 minutes to get to the hostess, as we had to wade through a Jersey Shore-esque crowd of 40 people at the entrance, then wait our turn to speak to her. We were told to go to the bar and assured we'd have a table soon. The bar was so crowded it took 15 min to get a drink.  There, we met a very nice couple from Toronto who'd been waiting for 1.5 hours for their table!! After 30 min and multiple check ins with the front it was clear we'd NEVER get that table.

The BEST PART: we noticed 3 empty booths in the dining room (yes, while the hostess was claiming they had no tables), so we just sat at one with our drinks. The staff didn't even have a clue it wasn't ours, and weren't even setting them with all these poor people waiting. With all the restaurants in this city, this is the kind of thing that is certain death.

I had been here about a year-ago and had a wonderful experience with the food and service, so I have no idea what caused it to deteriorate so badly.

After finishing our drinks, we headed up the street to HILLSTONE where the service and food are awesome, and which I highly recommend!!

Scene/crowd = trashy at the bar, mixed bag of tourists, middle agers, and young professionals in the dining room
    Service = worst ever
Food = A- (based on a year ago)
Drinks = A- one saving grace!

The music is great as is the presentation and decor. That's it. If I had an opportunity for a do-over, I'd sit at the bar and have drinks. I made reservations at Hurricane for a large party on Saturday, Oct. 12. After supplying my card information and complying with their prix-fixe policy for groups over 8, I was shocked to arrive at the restaurant 20 mins ahead of time to find that there was in fact no table reserved for my party. We had to wait for currently seated parties to clear.  Once we were finally seated, an hour past the reservation time, we (a party of 12 individuals) were stuffed into a space really meant for a party of 8-10.  The dump tray was right behind my head so that as busboys and runners cleared other nearby tables, the plates, forks, drinks banged loudly behind me.  While the wait staff were cordial, everything was rushed b/c the restaurant was overbooked. The runners would drop food and not even explain what it was or what was in it - and flagging down the waiter to ask a question, order another drink, request the check was a feat in itself.  I was MONUMENTALLY disappointed as the reservation was in celebration of my birthday and it felt like I was at Applebees, only at Hillstone prices.

The place is a rip off. Please do yourself a favor and save your money for real quality food and service

Made reservations for 8 for a birthday celebration.  Two of our friends where late.  The host wouldn't give us a table until everyone was there.  So we had drinks at the bar...ridiculously over priced for so so drinks...When everyone did finally came the host had us waiting for half hour then told us he's not even sure he can give us a table.  Wish I can tell you guys what I really think of this place, but too bad I'm rating it for how the host treated us, class act for sure.  So we went across the street to Dos Caminos, told them what happened, they sat us in the VIP room next to the Jonas Brothers. Had a blast! good food, great service dropped a grand plus tip. Also told more of our friends about that sucky host at the hurricane club.

Very nice place. Made a reservation for two at 8 pm on a Saturday and we were seated immediately. The edamame was excellent and the cashew chicken was amazing. The ambiance is very nice. I saw people with cute little coconut drinks.  Definitely worth trying.

I would've added an extra star if the staff wasnt so rude an unaccomodating.

Came in with a party of 10 at 5:45pm on a Thursday when the restaurant was totally empty. We were forced to order off of a pre-fixed menu since our group was larger than 9. Best way to describe their pre-fixed menu would be "a great way to ensure guests will never return".

I understand the reason for forcing larger parties to use the pre-fix menu but how "slammed" would the kitchen really be when we were the only one's in the restaurant?  We had a vegetarian in our group and we were given an attitude when we asked if she could order off of the full menu since there was only one vegetarian option on the pre-fix menu.

The menu came with an appetizer, a 1st course, a main course and a dessert.

The appetizers were pretty good so I had high hopes at first.

The 1st course was just a choice of a roll. Most of us got the Thai Crab and Avocado roll. It tasted like it had been made at 10am that morning.

The main course options were a joke. Most of us opted for the sea bass and that's all we got. A piece of fish on a plate. Nothing else. Are you kidding me?

The desserts were good. I liked the samoan which was layers of angel food cake, caramel and coconut. Unlike the dinner, there was more than enough dessert to go around.

The restaurant decor was nice but I dont eat decor so I won't return.

Went there for the first time last week and the only thing I was impressed with was the decor of this place.

Went inside for some drinks and appetizers on a weekday night just to kill time and was not satisfied with food or service.  Bbq dumplings were blah, service was rude and the only thing I did enjoy was probably my drink.  Won't b back again.

All flash.  Attractive restaurant, attractive staff, friendly service but that's it. Food was average - on par with a chain like TGIF.  Drinks are interesting and pretty in a Tiki way and the price reflects that but at a cost of around $20/drink we didn't even get a buzz, therefore they're cheap w/the alcohol and generous with the ice.  To sum it all up - high prices, low return for your money.  Too bad.

Went here for a graduation dinner with my mom and sister. I heard about it from a classmate who raved about how magnificent it was. I am still not sure if it has an actual club where people can get their grooves on. In any case, my impression was whoa..what a huge door. The decor is admirable, but the night that we came in, the staff could have been a bit nicer and accommodating.

Beautiful people everywhere...including our waiter. I enjoyed his accent but he could have smiled more. Am I asking for too much? I think not since it is expected of this type of restaurant to have friendly people. Heck, isn't it expected anywhere?

What had me dreaming about Hurricane is their Coconut Shrimp. I am not a big fan of coconut-flavored things but my oh my, it was pretty darn good. The steak was nothing out of the ordinary. I think you're better off going to a steakhouse for steaks.

Overall: Pretty decor for those who like to dress up and take pictures. Food was just okay. It's not a place I'd spend a lot of money in.

I spent a long time searching for the perfect place to have my Birthday Party for 15 people. I realized that for a party of that size it wouldn't be easy in NYC especially with only a week to go to the date I wanted. I knew I wanted something beautiful, fun, and with great food and drinks. I had a lot of friends recommend The Hurricane and so I called to see their availability. They let me know of their $55 per person prix-fixe menu that they have for parties of 9 or more and at first I was a little bit skeptical because I didn't want to feel restricted but after looking at their Prix-Fixe Menu I realized that it is not restricting at all! The amount of options and food that comes with the prix-fixe is incredible! And for $55 a person it's more than a steal. I was even able to put a catchy little Header on my menus that were placed on our table. It was perfect.

The food was absolutely delicious. The sushi is outstanding and the entrees are huge and so so so good. I absolutely loved the thai crab & avocado roll and for an entree I got the Filet Mignon and it was perfect. Perfectly cooker, perfectly seasoned, and beautiful. The sides had to be ordered separeately and I got the sauteed snow pea shoots which were not wht I expected at all in a good way!  I guess I was expecting some not well seasoned greens, but these were spicy and sweet and just delicious. Who would've thought a side dish of green veggies could be so good!
As for the cocktails, I'm a huge Margarita fan and the Waikiki Margarita is everything a margarita should be. The pink salt they use on the rim adds a really nice touch too. All the other cocktails were also good, but nothing beats the Margarita they serve.

As far as service goes it was great. Servers were attentive, my water glass was never empty, and dirty dishes were cleared before anyone could even notice. All in all, it was a great experience and I will always recommend it.

The Hurricane Club was a major disappointment: the decor is not "high end" nor elegant as originally touted by others, the food is definitely below average, and the service is extremely rushed.

I wasn't too hungry when I arrived so I opted out of the Restaurant Week menu.  Instead I ordered the Coconut Shrimp from the appetizers and a side of their famed coconut rice.  You'd think that together they make a really good pairing as they both have coconut in them, but they both sucked.  While the coconut rice is very aromatic in scent, the flavors were not robust at all - definitely not worth that $11 price tag.  The portion was also very small.  As for the Coconut Shrimp, other than being plentiful crispy enough, it lacked in flavor and had an extremely weird texture.  The shrimp was not whole pieces, but instead some sort of minced shrimp paste instead (totally weird and fake-tasting).

Based on reviews (both Yelp and through friends), I came up with this image of Hurricane Club as intensely high-class with chandeliers and elegant decor everywhere.   They did have all that, but it didn't look right at all and somehow non-cohesive.

For below-average food, a rushed experience and decor that was more of an eyesore than delight to the eyes, our bill came to $215 for 5 people.  Hurricane Club, if you're charging prices like the big boys, you really oughta act and play like the big boys, meaning the decor and food should be GOOD to GREAT.

Beautiful decor, and awesome drinks. Definitely the place to be on a saturday night with your gals. The food is absolutely delicious. I had grilled tiger shrimp with their jalepeno citrus sauce and the hawaiian fried rice (wish i had a pic to share) was served in a sizzling cast iron bowl, a mixture of rice, spices , pineapple chunks, bacon all toped with a sunny side up egg.  my friend had the cashew chicken with coconut rice, the rice -- sweet and creamy served in a coconut shell.  We ordered 'the watermelon' drink , served in a humongous watermelon . Our waitress warned us to be gentle with the straws and of course someone stabbed the bottom of the melon causing all of juice to run out; We began to drink from the bottom of the melon. Our waitress noticed and brought us complementary (on the house) watermelon cocktail. Which was pretty nice!!! I'd be visiting this spot again.

The drinks are amazingly exotic here that are great &  to share with friends. The downside is that they have a lot of ice so you don't really get much... Unless you specifically ask them you want the drink strong ..& less ice.. Bottom line is that you are paying a lot  & they should accommodate you!
The ambience is pretty fancy and romantic . The music played is similar song to daft punk..at first I wasn't feeling the music but after some drinks you appreciate it and it gets more upbeat.
The service was slow for a fancy place like this that usually has to be extra attentive but nevertheless the staff was friendly & polite .
I recommend the calamari & mango sushi
If its your birthday they give you a complementary cake which is a plus

I would definitely be coming with a group of friends!!

I've been here twice... once for drinks and apps at the bar and another time for dinner.  The restaurant is gorgeous.  It's just stunning and rather large.  The food is very good.  Had the fiery bbq dumplings, which were fantastic.  Also had the spicy garlic noodles.  Definitely a ton of heat.  I enjoyed the food and the ambiance is very nice.  I'd like to come back and try a few other dishes on their menu and their dessert options.
Definitely would consider a return visit.
Edited this one to upgrade to 4 stars... the ambiance and the service justify it!

When I first approached the revolving doors I had Invisioned this place to look like a all white vintage hotel. Then I approached the host and looked around and wow! It is so pretty!! Somewhat of a vintage, upscale, lounge, with a Caribbean feel right in the middle of New York!

While waiting for my friend they offered me to sit at the bar... Turned around to the bar, "noooo everyone's too snooty looking over there!" We also have the lounge... Mmm "the lounge looks lonely but okay." THen I INSTANTLY made eye contact with Mark which one of thee most amazing waiters ever!! Mark happened to be working the lounge section along with Johnny, he's great too! We connected right away, he explained all of the best things on the menu and was great company!! I wish I could just take him home with me...

Okay so I started off with the lychee martinee.. ehhh ive had better. BUT THEN i had the Mai Tai EXCELLENT! That got the job done!

Off of the featured resturant week menu we went with the PB Guava SO GOOD! The Fiery pork dumplings.. Wow!! Packed with flavor! For our main dish we went with the Cashew chicken which was cooked just right! Side dish of coconut rice, a must have! Dessert was were a bit of disappointment set in... The Chocolate Kill-Devil's Food Cake bruléed banana, caramel rum sauce.. I only enjoyed the bruléed banana.. The chocolate cake tasted like a piece of Entenmann's cake. Ew!

All in All... I'll be back!!

Came here on a trip to NYC recently-

In terms of the food, they had a sort of Asian/Polynesian fusion thing going on, which they executed quite well.

The Crispy Peking Pig was awesome! And the presentation was fun.

Cocktails are very important at a trendy spot like this, and I'd have to say not being a fan usually of sweet drinks, they're quite delicious here.

The service was good, attentive staff- the noise level was just a little higher than I would've preferred, but that was from one party making most of it. They had a DJ going, a definite plus here.

Overall I'd say, if given the opportunity, this is definitely a place to check out in NYC.

Good food, cool crowd, great drinks!

Do recommend making a reservation for the evenings though.
