When I lived on the Upper East Side, I was over at the local Rainbow store all the time. It was small but had an incredible selection of just about anything I might once have gone to either Woolworth's or Macy's for...and at very good prices.
I will look and make sure there are enough reviews here..if not I will do one of the other Rainbow stores...they are great for the people who get to use them, as far as I am concerned, unless they have gone dreadfully downhill in the last ten years.
This is for the Yorkville one, as someone says here, "Rainbow is the best general store in town."

Ah, Rainbow - brings back such Upper East Side memories - you can get lots of things here in a pinch - household goods, home decor, a copy of your keys, tools, have a prescription filled, buy a vacuum cleaner.
And they don't flinch when you bring your (small) dog in the store.
It's crammed with stuff. -

Definitely a fan. One block from me, whenever I need something (or, ANYTHING), chances are it's available at Rainbow. Birthday cards (they currently have HILARIOUS political cards, both for dems and repubs), snack food, beauty needs, pharmacy, socks, kids toys, hardware items, paint, organizational things, cleaning supplies, even furniture (although definitely not the highest quality, probably akin to IKEA).
I come here so regularly that all the sales people (the friendly ones, anyway) know me.
Top recommendation: The Swiss Mix trail mix. For $1.99 for a pretty sizable bag, it's the best tasting and best value trail mix I've found. (Random, I know, and probably not what people are necessarily looking for on a jaunt to Rainbow but...ya know).
They do FREE DELIVERY on furniture, too! Big perk.
One drawback is that the checkout line is often slow as molasses...they do have a pretty good return policy, but it takes a bit of time to go through the process. -

New York, NYIf there is something you need, odds are you can get it at Rainbow. This place is a hardware store, pharmacy, home goods store, and more. I always go in for one thing and come out with a dozen.
Love this place! -

New York, NYThis is the one stop shop from heaven. they have it all. you can decorate your room, organize your closet, have a key made, buy some gift wrap, fancy shampoo and stock your cabinets with both silverware and cleaning supplies. some things can be purchased else where for cheaper. but as for convenience and variety: fabulous -

New York, NYYou can't beat Rainbow for that last minute "Oh my god I need _____ and don't want to run all over town" moment. Sure, the prices aren't great - but until you can point me to another place right across the street where I can buy shampoo, a new dresser, under the bed storage, contact solution, a pitcher, a beach towel, and some soda, Rainbow is the best around. -

Manhattan, NYPretty decent store with some deals. Eggs are 1.99/dozen, gallon of milk is under $4, next to the post office and they sell just about everything (of course it's going to be a little more expensive) but its better than helping diene trade where you would have to spend over $500 in overpriced goods to redeem $5. -

New York, NYNot only is this the best general store in town -- with everything from great toys and party goods to a full drugstore and funky housewares -- the pharmacy is easily the best in Manhattan. The pharmacist herself takes the call, knows her customers, and serves as a refreshing antidote to the horrors of the chain stores with their voice mail systems.
